Wild Child: JSS Chapt. 52 “The End” Part. 1

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

*Four Months Later* I stood back stage wearing this: www.polyvore.com I was going on the Oprah show to promote my book and talk about being a mom, wife and recovering drug addict. Oprah: So please welcome Brooklyn Jonas-Kagasoff. -*walks out onto stage**hugs Oprah**sits down* Oprah: So you started out early this morning? -Yeah. *smiles* But its worth it. *pushes back hair* Oprah: So youre a new mom right? -Yes. Oprah: And how old is she? -4 months. Oprah: And how is it being a Mom? -Stressful, wonderful, tiring, amazing. I have a lot of help and Im lucky I do because of my situation. Oprah: And you recently wrote a book correct? -Yes. Its called My Song. Its basically about my childhood memories and the teen years and then all the stuff thats happened in the last year. Oprah: And you have been through a lot. Drug addiction, alcohol addiction, your party girl phase. -Yeah and it hurts to know that while I was hurting myself, I was also hurting people I love in the process. I gave up my old friends and I became very distant towards my brothers. I would NEVER talk to them. And I could see it was killing them not knowing why I was so strung out all the time. Oprah: In your book though you talk about forgiveness and how lucky you are they forgave you. -Yeah I totally am. They couldve just been like Screw you! Youre on your own! and I wouldve had to find another way to support myself. Oprah: Do you blame your party girl phase on why you got pregnant? -In a way yes. Ive always said if I had never gone to that first club that one night I wouldve never met Chris. And then if I hadnt gone to that first party we wouldnt have made out and then gotten a record deal. But in another way I know that we probably wouldve crossed paths some other way. So I cant totally blame my party girl lifestyle on it. Oprah: So lets fast forward from you partying. You and Chris break up. Youre depressed. When do you think youre pregnant? -I had been throwing up A LOT lately. And I had recently blamed my missed period to the pills and to the fact I was so stressed about the break up and everything. But then I began to put two and two together. So I went to the doctor and sure enough I was. Oprah: And did all of the things youd been doing flow back? -Yeah. We had broken up 2 months ago so I was thinking, the baby will be born with complications or shell be still born. And my doctor was sure of that too. But she checked for complications and she said By some miracle its fine. And I felt so happy. But I knew I had to stop. Oprah: The audience today is teen moms or young moms and teenagers that are dealing with drug and/or alcohol addiction or are recovering from So you still stand by God? -Yes. Every day I thank him for everyone. My brothers, my mom, Daren, Chris, Melody, my best friend Selena, my career. Everything. I dont think I couldve gone through this without him. Oprah: Selenas in the audience today. How involved is she in Melodys life? -Very. Shes over almost every day with Nick. Shes a great godmother. She plays with her and feeds her and changes her. Oprah: And Selena is it fun for you? Selena: Yes it is. Its great to know that she would consider me a good enough friend to be Mels godmother. Oprah: And whos her godfather? -Trey Songz. We chose him because hes always been there for Chris and me. Oprah: And how are your brothers towards Melody? -They lover her so much. Kevin and Nick dont live at home anymore since they moved in with their fiancés, but they are still there for her. She is SO close to Nick. She cant say his name, but shell go NNNN. Like shes trying to say Nick. Its so cute. Oprah: So you had a photo shoot with People magazine. And one of the pictures is this. On the screen was a picture of Melody. Kissing one of her cheeks was Chris, kissing the other was Daren. Oprah: So is she close to both? -Yes. She knows that Chris is her Daddy, but she also knows that Daren is her Daddy too and he loves her just as much. We actually have that picture in black and white and framed. I think its so cute. Oprah: Now you know I have to talk about this. Youre Dad.

anything. Every since my mom died something has been missing in me. Its been a month and still no one knows what it is. Most days I would just leave in the middle of school and go to the rehab center and lay there on her bed and cry some more. I had no one now besides my aunt, but what could she do? The Rise of the Mohawk Part III

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Although the Kahnawake, have lived peaceably among the other Mohawks for many years, they developed more social issues as they integrated with outside cultures. Not all of the results that have arisen due to cross-cultural interaction have been bad: many Native Americans the territory are now attending schools of higher education and are bringing back tremendous amounts of knowledge to their communities; but along with good changes have come some detrimental ones.

One of the first major epidemics to strike Native American communities all over North America was alcoholism. According to the Department of Health and Community Services at California State University of Chico, “The physiological theories generally suggest significant differences in alcohol absorption and metabolism rates between Native Americans and Caucasians. A wide variety of social factors appear to be implicated in Native American drinking problems.”Many also became involved in drug trafficking, namely moving around large quantities of marijuana. The climate around the Mohawk territory is ideal for marijuana growing and some of the residents have taken to the risky business of cultivating this plant. Most of the problems created by marijuana stem from the issues it created with law enforcement as opposed to causing detrimental community problems. Now the biggest issue has become crack and cocaine abuse, which have had a great impact on residents throughout the territory.

These drugs have made a swift and profound impact on the Kahnawake population. Ten years ago people had barely heard of such substances, and words like “crystal meth” and “crack” were not widespread. Alcohol was a big problem but it at least was something familiar and there were treatments available. Nobody knew how to react to the influx of harder drugs into the community. Most people simply shrugged it off as something that didn’t involve them and those who started using claimed that they were under control.

Nowadays the biggest problem is not so much that these drugs have found their way to the territory, it is the fact that children are getting access to these drugs at an astonishingly young age. What is even more saddening is the manner in which they acquire these drugs: now girls as young as thirteen have begun to resort to prostitution in order to feed their addictions and have been reported of stealing from their own families in order to have enough money to buy crack. Such activities are tearing the community apart, but how can one fight a problem that is so engrained in the lifestyle of community members from the very young to the older and respected members of the community?

One woman commented on The Eastern Door – a community based newspaper serving the Mohawks of Kahnawake – a saying her ex-husband, a crack addict, told her that he saw, “Peacekeepers, executives, a hockey coach and many young teenagers doing these drugs together.”

She continued by sharing a more personal story that perfectly demonstrates the severity of this situation that The Eastern Door published in a recent article:

“Her daughter began using cocaine when she was 12 years old. Her daughter has told her that there are many young girls who are using this drug, but do not have the money to fuel this habit. Instead of paying for the drug these girls are selling their bodies in exchange for cocaine. And the guys that give these young girls cocaine in exchange for sex are old enough to be their fathers. She said all these girls need to do is sleep with five or six of these guys and they’ll have enough cocaine for the night. Her daughter also told her that one of her older male friends, who’s now 15, would take care of her when they were using cocaine. She asked what she meant by that. Her answer was that he makes sure that she doesn’t take any bad cocaine. “I asked her how he would know the difference between good cocaine and bad,” she said. “She answered ‘Well, he gets it from his mother.’”

Having parents in the community who allow kids to use cocaine at the house is what has caused many children to accept this drug as something that is “not a big deal.” How can these children be blamed when some of the most influential members of the community are notorious drug users? Although any addicted children should certainly be treated as soon as possible and helped in any way possible, nothing will ever change if the older generation does not lead by example.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission’s responsibility to the tribe only increases daily as the revenues continue to pour in. Going from a state of relative poverty to a sudden influx of extreme wealth can often spell danger and the signs have been around for some time in the Mohawk territory. Drugs have ruined many families’ lives already and the situation will only deteriorate unless something is done. More money for drug awareness programs as well as programs for parents to detect when their kids are addicted are necessary to ensure that the problem doesn’t get even more out of hand.

All of this wealth is either going to become the greatest blessing the Kahnawake Community has ever received, or it may very well just be the devil in disguise. The future is in the hands of the Chief and Council, because the entire community will be depending on them to take the right actions to fight this situation.

Herbal Plant Medicines and the Shamans of the Amazon Rainforest Part 2

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Howard G Charing, and Peter Cloudsley join Amazonian Shamans, Javier Arevalo and Artidoro in discussions about the medicinal & spirit healing plants and their use.

Rosa Sisa

These are a kind of Marigold, and they are used in baths particularly for children with ‘mal aire’. This malady occurs when a family member dies and leaves the child unhappy and sleepless. The spirit of the dead grandfather – or whoever it was – lingers and makes the child sick. The spirit is sad to go and stays in the house after the person is buried and it tries to caress and comfort people in the family. This makes them ill.

Rosa Sisa also controls vomiting in general, as well as being used in floral baths for good luck.

Typically an envious neighbour will grab a handful of earth from the cemetery and throw it into your house to spread boredom and heavy feelings.

Again, when something is wrong in the house – people are bored or agitated – you get a bucket of water and add crushed Rosa Sisa flowers and Camalonga and wash the floors of the house with a brush to cleanse it.

Alternatively you could have the flowers in a vase in the house for the same purpose. Many people grow them either side of the front door of their house to absorb the negativity of people who look in enviously to see what possessions they have. The flowers go black but later they recuperate themselves.

Marigolds can also be used for making wishes, blowing with the wish in mind – like we do with a dandelion – because it is yellow, the colour of the sun.

Manchare or susto (fright) are maladies commonly suffered by children, and treated with Camalonga – a tree which grows wild in the forest, but many people grow it in flower pots in the city. It smells like onions and garlic and can be macerated in alcohol to be rubbed onto the person. In cases requiring soul retrieval a prayer or chant would be used at the same time.

Typically a child gets Manchare when playing in the trees and jump down to the ground and receive a much bigger bump than they expected. In this case the Rosa Sisa is tied into a bunch with a white ribbon and brushed all over the body from the head down. This is because the spirit returns through the crown of the head. A little prayer is said to invoke the spirit back, using the name of the child.

It can be used in emplasts for fevers too.

Huairacaspi

It comes in two varieties, a high tree with a thick trunk and a small slim tree with little leaves. It is the same tree as tornillo which is good timber. The branch can be bent double without breaking, and is good for doing yoga and for flexibility in general.

It is good for prolepses, chronic diarrhoea, hepatitis, arthritis, broken bones, and cold in the body. As a teacher plant it is good for disorientation, and sense of being lost.

After drinking you need to take a shower as it makes you sweat out all the toxins.

Ushcaquiro

This plant is very little known and used. Like chuchahuasi, it is good after operations, mothers caring for their babies, vaginal discharge, cancer, cold. It is prepared in water or alcohol. Painkiller.

Ushcaquiro, Huairacaspi and Chiricsanango together make a good treatment for arthritis.

Guayusa

Has a female spirit and makes you dream of beautiful things and takes the laziness out of you.

Albaca

This is good to have in the house, it works better than an aerosol spray for fresh air because the flowers burst into flower with a perfume. Also good for floral baths to make you smell good so you attract lots of friends. Also if you have a row with a friend, they will come back to you. In cases of gastritis, appendix or gale-bladder problems you can take it as a tea.

Even when dry is still smells.

Shimi Pampana

Is a root like a potato and a constituent of Pusanga. It comes in male (white) and female (red) forms and tastes like yucca. It is very good for people with excessive anger. You grate it to get the juice, and put it in soup, coffee or whatever and sometimes it is put secretly into a person’s drink to calm them down, especially when there is a lot of arguing in the family. You can bathe in it too. The dry powder obtained from drying the root, is good for sun burn, common in summer when the river is low and people go to the beautiful beaches to swim. It takes out the impurities of the skin without desiccating it.
