I know about Al-Anon but would like to find an online group. My child is nineteen and lives with me, she does work but gets laid off and is drinking way too much. I am worried about her as my ex husband is also an alcoholic. I can’t seem to find much online about parents of adult alcoholics just children of them.
I think my boyfriend of 14 months (with whom I live together for 1 year) is addicted to online poker, he has been playing it everyday (more or less 3 hours a day) for at least 9 months.
During this 14 months relationship I’ve been 4 of them outside the country to study, when I’ve came back he was playing poker, at first I thought it was just a hobby that was helping him to not think about his problems.
Two months ago I discovered that he was badly in debt, around 18000 dollars (not poker related) and 2 weeks ago I’ve discovered he was playing with money, first he bet 20 dollars per day, after 40$ per day and one day he bet 100$. I don’t know if he wins or looses. And we are always strugling to par our bills, plus the time he spends with poker everyday, not speaking to me, makes me fell truly lonely.
I didn’t knew whom to speak, not my friends (our friends), not my family, so I’ve told my concerns to his mother. When he knew he got furious with me and didn’t understood that I told her because I was feeling helpless. Now he sleeps in the sofa, unwilling to talk to me, sees TV and still playing online poker.
I’ve tried to talk to him about my concern with poker but he always argues the same: that I do not have nothing to do with where he spents his money in, that is an extra money, that I wouldn’t have this and that gift if it wasn’t for poker (I never knew he bought them with poker money), that he relax when he plays so therefore it is good for him, etc…
I don’t know what to do. I don’t know whom to talk to about this. His mother got too sentimental and over the top and now I’ve raised a family issue and he does not speak with me.
Please, can anyone with or without similar experience can give me an useful advice?

As a public relations guy with a record label, I’ve had more than my share of exposure to drug and alcohol addictions. With a stable of rock stars under my management, I keep a half dozen proven rehab clinics on my rolodex. Despite all this background, however, nothing prepared me for the most heart wrenching experience of my life: finding out that my mother had become a drug addict.
By way of background, let me stress that my mother is the last person anyone would ever suspect of being a drug addict. My parents were typical middle class folks and my mom was exceptionally prim and proper. They were incredibly supportive of me through my childhood and paid for my four years at an Ivey League college. Mom was more than a little mortified when I graduated and immediately took a job with the record label, but much worse was yet to come. I once brought the lead singer of the KrewCutt Boyz to my parents place after he’d had too much to drink one too many times and the band abandoned him, passed out in our office. He stayed in their basement for a week until he’d sobered up. That’s right; I’d turned my parents’ home into a combination flophouse and Drug Rehab</a>. Mom never complained; she cooked him meals, did his laundry and packed him some sandwiches when he left.
Mom fell down the stairs last year while carrying a clothes hamper down to the laundry room. She tore several tendons and the doctor prescribed OxyContin to deal with the pain. I was utterly shocked when my father called me a few months ago to say that mom had been caught forging a renewal on her prescription. I stared at that rolodex, but nothing had prepared me for dealing with my own mother; none of these clinics was appropriate for her. The Yellow Pages had dozens of entries, but no information. Relationships with Those You Know, Like and Trust
One of the key premises of the social networking sites is the word “social.” It is about creating relationships. It’s NOT just about self-promotion. Social networking sites are vehicles that take time, like relationships. They’re just another way to be “out there” connecting with people.
Business is all about establishing and maintaining relationships and most of us do business with people who we “know, like and trust”. With this in mind, this needs to be your primary goal when approaching social networking. We accomplish this when we’re authentic in how we communicate and allow our personalities to really shine through so we can attract the right people.

One way to be authentic is by creating a meaningful personal bio about yourself. Write something that gives a sense of who you are as a woman as well as providing information about your business. Here’s your chance to let your authenticity shine through. Instead of a “salesy” approach, provide information that leads someone to say, “I’d like to go the next step and learn more about her.”
Once you start building connections, you can start communicating with them. I like this quote by Flint McGlaughlin, “People don’t want to be marketed TO; they want to be communicated WITH.” Instead of bombarding your connections with a constant barrage of sales pitches, try sending out a warm letter letting people know what you’re up to in your business.

I believe you can and I’d like to share a connection that I recently created. I’ve been dabbling a bit with Facebook and Twitter as I try to find a “Kim” way to use these sites. I’m not much of a casual chit-chatter—I tend to desire more meaningful interactions—so I’m trying to find my own approach to networking online.
For the past few months I kept coming across a woman named Gina. She popped up on my pages and I checked out her site and the groups she was offering. I reached out to her on the phone and we easily spoke for two hours.
After that call, I knew she was the woman I wanted to interview me for a new CD I’m offering Metromoms entitled “5 Surprising Secrets Every Mom Entrepreneur Must Know.” I just had a great feeling about her. We also discussed ways we could bring our mutual expertise on connecting soulfully by collaborating on a class or product. It’s a relationship in the new fun stages.
This “meaningful connection” is already proving to be very valuable and I know it’s just beginning. There’s a lesson here – Gina stood out from others because she had an authentic approach and the content she was providing had real value.
As women working from home I can’t overemphasize how important it is to be up-to-date on these online communities and how they can serve you. Great connections with like-minded women – from around the country – CAN BE established by participating in social networking.
