ageing populations, increasing urbanisation and a more sedentary

lifestyle [34, 35]. However, data from many parts of

the world with high and increasing prevalence (Asia, Latin

America, China) are not broadly based, and so this estimate

is likely to be markedly low.

is one of the most common childhood diseases in developed

European countries and the incidence has increased dramatically

in some newly prosperous countries

-The incidence of Type 2 diabetes in particular is expected

to increase considerably as developing countries become

more Westernised in terms of availability of healthcare and

Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is developing in epidemic proportions in today’s world with 5 to 10% of the worldwide population affected. This disease is defined by Dr Stoppard, “as the inability of the body to use glucose for energy due to inadequate amounts of or loss of sensitivity to, the hormone insulin”. Which means that the body uses glucose in order to perform work and if it fails because of insufficient amount of insulin or because the body cells become more resistant to the hormone’s effect then we end up with the non-healthy state called diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes:

1- Type 1 which is caused by the abnormal reaction in which the immune system destroys insulin secreting cells in the pancreas. It is more common in childhood.

2- Type 2 which causes are less understood. However, genetics and overweight are important factors.

Causes

Diabetes of Type 1 is usually caused by some viral diseases which affect the immune system of the child, though the genetic factor of one parent suffering from type 1 diabetes may have some effect, however most children who develop type 1 diabetes do not have parents with diabetes. As for Type 2 diabetes it is the increase in food intake which leads to overweight and obesity as well as the living of a sedentary lifestyle and it mostly affects adults.

Symptoms

Both types of diabetes have the same symptoms where there is excessive urination which account for the thirst and dry mouth but also for the insufficient sleep at night because of the need to go to the toilet. This state is paralleled by the lack of energy; blur vision and quick weight loss, abdominal pain, deep breathing and acetone smell breath may also consist of symptoms of diabetes.

Treatment

National health reform could jeopardize California patient protections

A host of medical services that insurers must pay for in California — from cancer screenings to diabetes treatment to two-day hospital stays for delivering mothers — could be weakened or lost if the health care measures pending in Congress become law.

Currently, any health insurer selling policies in California must comply with the state’s extensive consumer protections. The reform measures would allow insurance firms to sell policies across state lines if certain conditions were met, bypassing California’s rules in favor of the requirements in the state where the policy is issued.

The result, critics warn, would be a “race to the bottom,” in which insurance companies set up shop in states with the weakest consumer rights and skirt California’s lengthy list of mandated health care services.

“This has the potential to wipe out all of these hard-fought protections,” said Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, who led the drive for several of those mandates as a state legislator earlier in her career and is now threatening to vote against a health care overhaul that weakens California’s standards.

Speier and 28 other Democratic House members from California outlined their concerns about interstate health insurance sales in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., last week.

“Practically speaking, insurers will domicile their plans in states with less stringent regulations and market to the population in more protective states like ours, just like nationally chartered banks have done,” stated the letter, which was signed by several other Bay Area Democrats. “California residents will lose out if state protections are undermined.”

California could take steps to preserve the state’s protections, but that could be tricky given the power of the insurance lobby.

Selling insurance across state lines has long been touted by Republicans and insurance firms as a way to spur competition and reduce premiums. More interstate sales, they say, would mean more choices for consumers.

“One of the challenges and barriers to competition is all the varying and conflicting state mandates that exist across the country,” said Robert Zirkelbach, a spokesman for the industry trade group America’s Health Insurance Plans, arguing that the patchwork of rules contributes to higher premiums.

The health care reform legislation would create a few avenues for interstate insurance sales. Under one scenario envisioned by the Senate bill, insurers could sell so-called “multistate” policies with benefits meeting minimum standards that would be defined by federal regulators after health care legislation passes.

If California wanted to mandate benefits that exceed federal standards — including those now in place — it would have to add them back through new legislation passed in Sacramento. Moreover, California would have to pay the extra costs of any additional benefits it mandated — either by compensating individuals enrolled in the plans or by paying insurance companies directly.

That could lead to a situation, critics say, in which many of the state’s current consumer protections are stripped away. To get them back, “We would have to go back and fight these battles again, one by one” in the state Legislature, said Jerry Flanagan, a health care advocate for Santa Monica-based Consumer Watchdog.

Under another scenario, states could enter into compacts in which insurance companies would be subject to the regulations of the state where they issue policies instead of the customer’s home state. For that to happen, California leaders would have to voluntarily enter into agreements with other states, knowing that California’s own health care protections could be ignored.

Although that might seem far-fetched, it’s not inconceivable, Speier argues, given the insurance industry’s political influence in Sacramento.

Allowing health insurance to be sold across state lines could affect California’s top insurers in different ways. Those owned by large national companies, such as Anthem Blue Cross and UnitedHealth Group, would likely benefit from the ability to sell streamlined policies to customers in many states, while potentially avoiding California’s strict rules.

But the change could mean more competition for insurers concentrated in California, such as Kaiser Permanente.

UnitedHealth declined to comment, while representatives for Blue Cross and Kaiser Permanente did not respond to requests for comment. The list of mandated benefits in California numbers in the dozens, ranging from asthma care for children to post-mastectomy reconstructive surgery. Aside from such benefits, state laws give consumers other protections designed to boost their leverage with insurance companies. For example, if a medical procedure is denied or delayed by an insurer, patients can seek an independent third-party medical review.

According to Speier, more than half of the 7,000 denials or delays of care reviewed through that appeals process since 2000 have been reversed.

“There really is a lot at stake,” she said.

A vote in the Senate on health care reform is scheduled Thursday morning.

In another potential detriment to California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday said that the health reform measures would saddle the state with an additional $3 billion to $4 billion in annual Medicaid costs to provide insurance to low-income residents. In a letter to Pelosi and other California congressional members, he warned that the health care measures would impose a “crushing new burden” on the state and urged the lawmakers to amend the legislation before final votes in Congress.

“As the partner responsible for implementing this program,” wrote Schwarzenegger, who has been generally supportive of the push for national health care reform, “I am telling you that our Medicaid program is already at the breaking point, and if federal health care reform is passed without addressing the underlying faults in the system, health care reform will fail

How to Take Charge of Your Health, Control Medical and Subsequent Costs Now!

Many people think they have no need to worry about their health or that of their team or assume their health insurance will cover if necessary. However, staying healthy usually takes more than just common sense. My mother and I were involved in a tragic auto-accident. Although she did not have any health issues prior, she could not breathe without a ventilator after five weeks of intensive care. The ICU physicians “concluded” that she would be ventilator dependent for the rest of her life; she refused to live on a machine. I had never doubted the ICU physicians — they were my physicians at that time as well. At that moment, I had to hold in my tears and do my own assessment. To my surprise, I found my mother did not breathe efficiently, so I taught her a new way of breathing and practiced with her. Within three days, my mother was taken off the ventilator successfully. Had I not questioned the ICU doctors, my mother would have chosen to die.


Later in her rehab, my family worked with nine other specialists, including acupuncture and herbs, and achieved what most rehabilitation experts cannot imagine — my mother now is not only able to cook, shop and enjoy her interests fairly independently, but also reminds me of my tax return!! Her entire care cost almost $300,000, not to mention the time and effort and her suffering. In the end, I am very lucky that I can still have a healthy and happy mother.


To stay healthy, we need basic overall medical knowledge, proper thinking and the ability to stay calm and enjoy life under any level of stress. My mother’s case is a good “after” example. One gentleman lay in bed, “totally paralyzed,” for one year due to a wrong diagnosis of one hospital until he met Dr. Milton Erickson — Dr. Erickson “made him so angry” that he walked out of the doctor’s office the same day! Humans tend to believe in “authorities figures” that can be our parents, school principles, judges, doctors, attorneys, etc, and turn off our own judgment. All of these are samples of internal restrictions. What makes it worse is that the improper thinking or internal restrictions can be so familiar to us that we are not aware of their existence!


As proven by Harvard studies, stress can cause an inability to think clearly or make the right decisions, decreased creativity as well as other cognitive, psychological and physical symptoms; over 50% of adults in the U.S. experience high daily stress. Stress can also worsen many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, depression and Fibromyalgia.


Knowing more and seeing the big picture, besides having a strong spirit, will strengthen our confidence and help us stay in better control. We do not have to wait until we or our loved ones get sick. Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid for Good Dental Health

Dental decay is the most common form of disease known to mankind. It is a known fact that any food that contains carbohydrates, when left in contact with teeth for a prolonged period of time, can cause cavities. The normal micro organisms present in the mouth produce acid through fermentation of the carbohydrate. Unfortunately, we see this happen often. As a practicing dentist, I routinely advise my patients to maintain a healthy diet to prevent such problems.

It is important to remember that altering the diet alone cannot guarantee good oral health. But diet does make a difference when it comes to oral health.

The Dos and Don’ts

Food that contains too much sugar, like candy, leads to acid formation. That, in turn, causes cavities. Repeated exposure to such food can be just as bad as prolonged exposure. Sticky food, chips and taffy, can stay stuck to the teeth and be equally bad. The need for brushing teeth after every meal cannot be emphasized enough. Have children brush their teeth right away after they have candy. Flossing on a daily basis provides extra protection for the hard-to-reach surfaces.

Frequent snacking between meals should be avoided. Diets that contain too much acid can cause damage to the tooth structure. Even healthy foods, like milk and orange juice, contain a lot of acid. Soda or any other carbonated drink can be caustic. Also, when combined with the water in the saliva, these carbonated drinks produce carbonic acid. Both forms can cause chemical erosion and a breach in the enamel layer of teeth.

How to Combat Acid

Don’t let any of the acidic food to stay in your mouth for long. Rinse out your mouth immediately. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to neutralize any acid that might be produced in the mouth. Remember, there is no significant difference between the harmful effects of regular soda and diet soda. The difference between the two is only in the amount of calories and not in the degree of damage to the teeth.

Hard food

If you chew a lot of hard foods, like pretzels or ice, you may develop symptoms consistent with teeth grinding. Chewing too hard may also crack the teeth.Fillings and other restorations can become loose because of the constant flexure of the tooth structure. Eat hard food in moderation.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Extremely hot or cold food should be avoided. Both metal and resin fillings expand and contract with extreme changes in temperature. As a result the teeth may crack and the fillings may leak.

Do not eat ice cream and then rinse out your mouth with hot water. Even water at room temperature might not be ideal in this situation. Use cold water to rinse out your mouth and allow the teeth to shift to the body temperature gradually. Sudden changes in the temperature produce minute fracture lines in the teeth. Similarly, do not rinse out your mouth with cold water after drinking a cup of hot tea or coffee. Use warm water to do so.

During Pregnancy

A mother’s intake of calcium is crucial to ensure strong bones and teeth in the fetus.

During Childhood

It is necessary to have adequate amounts of calcium in children’s diet. However, a parent’s responsibility does not end there. In terms of improving dental health, a comprehensive approach has to be taken. On top of ensuring good oral hygiene and adequate diet, children have to be encouraged to brush their teeth after every meal.

Changing the Outlook

I would like to mention that we should not be focused on dental health as an isolated entity. We should start thinking about how dietary habits can affect oral health and most importantly, overall health. Some behaviors that are bad for the body also negatively affect oral health. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to oral cancer and liver failure. Smoking can lead to periodontal disease, oral cancer and lung cancer. Eating too much junk food not only increases the risk of cavities, there is likelihood of obesity, diabetes and cardiac problems. Untreated eating disorders can lead to dental problems like chemical erosion of teeth. Skipping meals also result in increased acidity, and therefore, chemical erosion of teeth and Halitosis.

Anise (pimpinella Anisum) Health Benefits

It is a herbal, aromatic plant, which is cultivated. It grows as high as 40-70 cm in the light, in rich soils and it needs moderate humidity.

Parts used: the bulb, the leaves, the seeds and the roots.

The therapeutic virtues of the anise have been known since the ancient times. Pythagoras claimed that the anise enhanced man’s strength, cured insomnia, stimulated appetite, made men more fertile and facilitated digestion.

Main constituents known: The vitamins, the B complex (B1, B2), C, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, iron, aromatic essences.

Pharmacologic action: carminative, antispasmodic, expectorant, a pancreatic stimulant.

As food, the anise is used for cooking sweet and spicy dishes. It has been used as an aphrodisiac since the Greeks’ time. The medical tests have confirmed that anise seeds intensified lust.

The anise fruit have got a nice taste and are used in the phytotherapy. As a ripe fruit or as juice, it is recommended for curing asthenia and for stimulating suckling mothers’ lactation. Synthetically speaking, one may say about the anise that it is a medicine plant recommended for curing nervous asthenia, migraines, vertigos, rheumatism, cough, bronchial asthma, gastric pains, and slow digestion.

Natural treatments and application procedures:

1. The anise fruit infusion:

The infusion is made from half a tea-spoon of mashed anise fruit scalded in 250 ml of boiling water. The tea should be left for 10-15 minutes in order to become an infusion. It should be drunk in fractions: half a mug before a main meal. Caution: the tea must only be kept for a short time before its consuming. As for sucklings, an infusion from 5-6 anise fruit scalded in 250 ml of boiling water is to be made. It treats flatulence and children’s colics.

2. The tea for eliminating helminths:

The infusion is made from 10 grams of mashed fruit scalded in 100 ml of boiling water. The tea should be drunk in the morning on an empty stomach.

3. The tea from anise seeds:

The infusion is made from one tea-spoon of anise seeds boiled in 250 ml of water for 30 seconds. One mug of tea is to be drunk after the main meals. This tea treats bronchial asthma, cough, a slow digestion.

4. The decoction from anise roots:

The decoction is made from 30 gr. of broken up roots boiled in one litre of water for 20-30 minutes. One mug of tea is to be drunk after the main meals. This tea treats painful menses.

5. The anise ether oil:

It is used for curing stomach and intestine disorders, flatulence and colds.

Low Birth Weight Babies and Mothers’ Oral Health

Women have a lot to worry about when they are pregnant. Unfortunately, studies show that they now have another worry: the likely link between low birth weight babies and gum disease. This problem is distressingly more prevalent than a lot of expecting mothers may even realize. For your health and the health of your unborn child, you need to familiarize yourself with gum disease, its risks, and how to prevent them.

In the United States alone, as many as ten percent of babies are born prematurely. Naturally, premature babies tend to have a lower success rate. It is more difficult for these babies to thrive and survive. Their development could be at risk as well. Out of all the infant deaths in this nation, almost sixty percent of them are due to the babies being premature with low birth weight.

Such high numbers of afflicted mothers and babies demanded research. Tons of studies are still being done. Some of the results already stumbled upon an astonishing, downright chilling fact. There is a surprisingly strong link between mothers who have gum disease during their pregnancy. The study done suggests that these mothers were an astounding 7 times more apt to give birth to babies with low weights at birth.

Thus, a little more than eighteen percent of all babies born prematurely can be attributed to maternal gum disease. If the results are correct, that means that gum diseases causes low birth weight more than smoking or drinking during pregnancy.

A primary reason for these disturbing findings is due to the fact that, in general, if a mother has an infection during her pregnancy, her baby is more at risk for being born prematurely. This all begs the question, how can expectant mothers stop this from happening?

Natural Health Therapies and Cancer – Part II

This article is part of a series on Natural Health Therapies and Cancer. The material presented is meant to inform you of complementary cancer therapies that are available in the medical community. These therapies are to be used in cooperation with other cancer treatment methods. They are not meant to be done in place of your physician’s care. In the last article, we covered the basics of cancer – what it is, what causes it, what are its various types and stages. This article will focus on the aspect of Dietary Changes and Nutritional Supplements as a form of cancer therapy.

Aside from tobacco and smoking, there is no greater factor for triggering and promoting cancer than diet and nutrition. When used correctly, diet and nutrition are also the factors that have the highest ability to reverse cancer. According to the National Academy of Sciences, 40% of all cancer in men may be directly related to diet. The statistics are even worse for women; 60% of all cancers in women may be linked to nutritional factors.

As I’ve pointed out in other articles, what we eat is important to our health. Equally important is what we don’t eat. Our society has turned from a natural, raw food diet to a highly processed and refined diet. The average American meal consists of high-fat, high-protein, low-fiber foods in oversized portions. Our fast-paced society even calls some of them a ‘Value Meal.’ Where’s the value? The nationwide increase in cancer has been parallel to the decline in our eating habits.

Several areas of our society’s diet are excessive. In clinical studies, these excesses have been found to significantly increase cancer risks. The key sections of the American diet that contribute to cancer are:

· Excessive intake of animal protein (meat, cheese, dairy) – can increase the risk for cancer in the breast, colon, pancreas, kidney, prostate, and endometrium; certain preparation and cooking techniques (such as pickling, smoking, frying) add to the cancer risks; fatty meats contain higher levels of carcinogenic pesticides

· Intake of contaminated fish – mercury, nickel, oil, and PCBs found in many marketplace fish; 1/10 of a teaspoon of PCBs is enough to cause illness or cancer

· Excessive fat intake – can increase risk for cancer of the breast, colon, rectum, uterus, prostate, and kidney; partially hydrogenated vegetable oils are considered major problems along with insufficient intake of healthy Omega-3 fats

· Excessive intake of refined carbohydrates and table sugar – lowers immune system function; elevates insulin levels (which can promote breast cancer); tumors thrive in a high-glucose environment

· Excessive intake of iron – associated with red meat, fortified breads and pastas; cooking in iron pots and skillets can add to your iron exposure

· Excessive intake of alcohol – can increase risk for cancer in the breast, mouth, throat, pancreas, liver, head and neck; alcohol suppresses Natural Killer cells that help repel cancer

· Excessive intake of caffeine – cancer rates are higher for those who drink more than 3 cups of coffee a day; caffeine can cause DNA damage, adding to cancer risk

Although it looks like our diets doom us to destruction, there are steps we can take to reduce the cancer risk. Here are some ways to combat and prevent cancer through some simple changes in your diet –

· Eat more fruits and vegetables

· Drink green tea, fresh juices

· Eat nuts, seeds, legumes

· Avoid all red meats, dairy products, eggs and shellfish

· Avoid refined, sugary foods

· Avoid caffeine and alcohol

· Avoid all vegetable oils especially hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils

· Use olive, pumpkin seed, flaxseed, walnut, and sesame oils

· Avoid margarine, fried foods, creamy sauces and dressings

· Eat salmon, halibut, red snapper, and flounder for healthy Omega-3 fats

· Avoid cooking in iron or aluminum cookware

· Use stainless steel or glass cookware

· Avoid microwave use, particularly with plastic containers

· Eat organically-grown foods when possible

More advanced nutritional therapies include Vegan and Macrobiotic diets. These nutritional

regimens consist of raw, natural foods and specific food preparation techniques. These diets are used to help cleanse the digestive system, allowing the elimination of excessive toxins.

Nutritional supplements can play a major role in cancer prevention and cancer therapy. There are many different approaches being practiced successfully. For example, antioxidants, such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Alpha-Lipoic-Acid combat the free radical damage associated with cancer. Sea vegetables such as kombu are linked to a lower breast cancer rate in Japanese women. Garlic appears to boost the Natural Killer cell function and block cancer cells in the bloodstream. Certain types of digestive enzymes can be used to break down the protective coating on certain cancer cells. Minerals such as selenium, magnesium, calcium, and zinc are also used in varying dosages for certain cancer therapies.

As you may know, my PhD research is on the connection between nutrition and health. I’m concentrating on the importance of 8 basic carbohydrates called glyconutrients that help the cells communicate properly. ‘Glyco’ means sugar and these 8 simple sugars are involved in every cell interaction. The relatively new scientific field of glycobiology is making amazing discoveries on the impact of these simple sugars on our health. The studies show that many of these glyconutritional sugars, such as fucose, inhibit growth and/or tumor cell metastasis in certain cancers. The inhibition of cancer growth by glyconutritional sugars, such as mannose, appears to be partially related to immune system activation of Natural Killer cells, the white blood cell that destroys cancer cells. Research also demonstrates that glyconutritional sugars appear to inhibit tumor cell metastasis by preventing the attachment of tumor cells to normal cells. They do this by competing for glyconutritional sugar binding sites on the cell surfaces.

I personally know individuals that have had outstanding results against cancer with the use of these nutrients. Various glyconutrients are traditionally found in mother’s breast milk, pectin from apples and oranges, specific types of mushrooms, and limu. However, most of these glyconutrients are not in our diets. Luckily, our bodies can manufacture many of these nutrients through a lengthy metabolic process. Unfortunately, the effects of stress, medications, and other environmental factors make this process difficult and prone to errors. For that reason as well as the nutrition lost from the over-processing of our foods, the only way to insure that you get all 8 glyconutrients is through nutritional supplements. Broadly speaking, the annals of Ayurveda fall into three clear stages down the ages. They are the golden ancient stage, the desecration period and the post-independence rejuvenation age.

The ancient stage was the golden age of Ayurveda. This stage extended over years encompassing the age of the independent kingdoms when Ayurveda was the sole dependant means to effectively diagnose and treat illnesses of plants and also animals. There were royal and public patronages. Ayurveda flourished. Ayurveda treatises were composed. Study of Ayurveda occupied a pride of place. Brilliant students pursued Ayurveda with zeal and vigour.

Skin is a sense organ. The senses of touch, pain, temperature, pressure are felt by it. The seven layers of skin get their nutrition from Muscle tissue. Skin mirrors the qualities of the blood and body’s plasma tissue of a person. Hence it is said ‘glowing’ skin is the result of good quality blood and and plasma. No external skin care treatment and facial massage or application of make-up through dexterity of a skilled beautician can hide the shallow look if the skin is unhealthy.
