What is the medical cure for alcoholism…….?

Besides rehab…I mean that if you are a smoker,,,even a drug addict…all the media/medical addresses the “smoker’s ,etc solution. I grew up with an alcoholic father (my mother died when I was 12)…it’s amazing that there are “patches” for smokers and outside med clinics for various drug addicts……I need someone….a medical organization/medical to help me with my alcoholism…AA has not worked for reasons that I refuse to get in to. To me, regarding alcoholism and especially women with my disease is still a disease that no one wants to address head-on . Please any one of you share. Thx.
There’s this pill you can get (I don’t know the name) where everytime you take a drink you get really sick or throw up. Even just one sip. So it makes you not want to take a drink. If I think of the name I’ll get back to you.

well you have already concored the first step. you will do it i can tell. i know this doesnt answer your question but i heard cold turkey is the best way for alcoholism.
Well try staying away from it. Like parties and don’t buy it! Also don’t go to a bar because it wont help you either.

Antabuse. Won’t work unless you couple it with counseling and a true change of heart.
Did you talk to your doctor? There are medications to ease your withdrawal symptoms so you don’t get the DT’s. But you can abuse these drugs if your not careful. You need to be under a doctor’s care. Treat it like any other sickness. Try to figure out what is making you drink in the first place. Some people who suffer from panic attacks “self medicate ” with alcohol. So a doctor can evaluate what course to take. Good luck!

There are currently only three medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration for the treatment of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence.
Campral – Treatment for Alcoholism
Campral (acamprosate calcium) is the most recent medication approved for the treatment of alcohol dependence or alcoholism in the United States — approved by the Food and Drug Administration in July 2004 — but it has been used widely in Europe for many years.
Naltrexone – Treatment for Alcoholism and Addiction
Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence and opioid addiction. Naltrexone hydrochloride is sold as the brand name Revia and Depade. An extended-release form of Naltrexone is marketed in some countries under the trade name Vivitrol.
Antabuse Treatment for Alcoholism

With any of them, smokers patch, alternate drugs for druggies….these are just stop gap measures. The medical cure is to STOP but you are the one that has to WANT TO STOP. No one can make you. So that means you will end up getting pretty low in the gutter before you pull yourself out of it. It is human nature….it has to be very bad before we decide to stop. Sorry, a fact is a fact.

some good friends, and a strong will. if you really want to stop drinking dont go to bars. if you have a problem buying it at the store then take some one with you when you shop. i drank some southern comfort once and it made me never want to drink again. it tasted so awful. i wouldnt try to use some medical substance for it. it all starts with your will. you have to take control of your mind and tell yourself that you no longer need it. you will go through a tough time but you will win the battle if you dont give up. i hope you win.

There is no “cure” for alcoholism. There are treatments. Antabuse was mentioned as one of them and there are some other medications on the market that are used to help curb cravings for alcohol but nothing that will ever cure the disease. To treat alcoholism (besides rehab) there are outpatient groups, psychiatrists that specialize in addictions, support groups other than AA (i.e. Moderation Management – but do know that founder of that particular movement did relapse and kill two people because she was driving while intoxicated. She later said that AA was the way to go.), one on one therapy etc. But like I said there is no “cure”. If you went to AA and didn’t like one particular group you could try another group or even consider attending meetings online.
