My mom lets me drink alcohol and beer, is she a bad mom?
September 3rd, 2010Basically, every weekend my mom lets me drink alcohol or beer (with her) and she’s totally fine with it. Do you think it’s okay? I’m 14 btw..:S
BTW she’s from Europe, Germany, and the legal age is 14. Do you think that’s why she lets me drink?
Yes Ralf, I drank alcohol and beer. No, it’s not bs, why the hell would I lie?
Dre, lmao, well thanks I guess, she’s pretty cool. :)
TIMOTHY, she not a bad mom, nor irresponsible. So stfu.
Well. it’s certainly a very european attitude… but no it is definitely not a good thing…
Well, as long as you’re supervised and you’re not getting drunk & it’s only at your house with her supervision, I don’t see anything wrong with it.
Btw, the legal age in the US is 21 to drink and purchase alcohol. So be prepared for many mixed opinions.
You simply drank alcohol or beer? Bs…
Nah, your Mom isnt a bad mom, Sure its illegal but your in her supervision, plus, alcohol doesnt harm you….Your moms frikkin awesome!
Alcohol and beer are the same. Yes you have a irresponsible mother. Yes a bad mom
It’s illegal in the US so in the US she would be considered unfit by allowing you do drink. She’s pretty much saying yeah you can kill your liver and kidney’s I don’t care.If you were 18 I wouldn’t say it was wrong but your way to young and it can really mess you up.
I would say yes if you can only drink at the house. It will teach you moderation and not to go overboard.
Depends, answer the following questions:
Does she recycle the empty bottles afterward?
Does she spring for the good stuff?
Do you two do anything together other than drink?
If you answered “No” to question 1, she is callous about the planet, a bad mother.
If you answered “No” to question 2, she is cheap for not buying you both the top shelf booze.
If you answered “No” to question 3, she is a bad mother for not sharing her weed with you.
In a way its kind of bad, shes teaching you bad things, but you aren’t going out every night and getting shitfaced.
She is kinda cool for letting you get a taste of adulthood, but you need to be careful in what you do
This is not uncommon in Europe except UK AND it shows. Seldom see drunkenness in Europe, binge drinking in UK is horrendous!
I’m from the UK, BTW
Well, you say you drink alcohol AND beer? Wow. Anyone who thinks alcohol and beer are two different things definitely should NOT be drinking. Your mom is killing your brain cells before they have even formed!
P.S. You asked us if your mom is a bad mom. So why are you mad at Timothy for saying she is? You either want our opinions or you don’t.
Just one thing. You stated that she comes from Germany, where the leal drinking age is 14, right? Does that mean that you are also currently living there, also? Or are you actually living in the States? In the US it is illegal for people below the age of 21 to consume alcohol. No, she is not a bad mother, necessarily. She just probably does not understand the laws here.
Firstly I have to point out that beer is a type of alcohol. Since you said that she isn’t a bad mom or irresponsible then she probably isn’t. That being said, it is a very European attitude, if it comes up I would mention something like ‘where my family is from it is legal and socially acceptable for people my age to drink with family’. Otherwise it does make her sound somewhat irresponsible. If she is allowing other underage people to drink in her home she is certainly at risk for some trouble with people not being allowed to go to your house, and legal problems if anything happens, even unrelated to alcohol when there is underage drinking going on in her home. I’m hoping that it is moderate amounts of alcohol in a supervised setting and an effort to teach control and to not have you wind up being the girl who drinks for the first time and dies from alcohol poisoning. I don’t support it myself, but I also don’t agree with a lot of the laws.
If you are allowed one drink every now and then in the privacy of your home – no problem. My father let me drink beer, but only under his strict supervision, at 11 (I grew up in Canada).
Only if she lets you drink in public, and/or to excess, is she a bad mom.
It’s up to you whether you actually drink it. It will be more harmful for you to drink alcohol now than it will be when you’re twenty-one.
I see no problem with it, you are being introduced to alcohol in a controlled way, so that when you get to the legal age to buy alcohol (more on this later) you will know its effects.
As for those posting that it’s illegal to drink in the USA until 21 ….. LEARN YOUR LAWS
It is illegal to BUY ALCOHOL under the age on 21 all over the USA, however each state has different DRINKING AGE laws.
In some you can’t drink until 21, in others you can drink in bars under the age of 21 if a patent/guardian is buying the alcohol, in others you can drink in the house under 21, again if supervised by a parent or guardian – and in some states parent/guardian is extended to spouse who is over 21.
It really is about time some Americans actually looked into their laws, and found out what they can and can’t do, rather than just parroting the same old “you’re under 21 so you can’t do it” that keeps being spouted on here .
To be honest I find it a bit sad that someone like myself, who has only ever had holidays in the USA (and only when well over 21), seems to know more about your drinking laws than the majority of Americans.
See http://www.alcoholpolicy.niaaa.nih.gov/State_Profiles_of_Underage_Drinking_Laws.html and select individual states for the different laws that are in force in different states.
PS: Saying the legal drinking age in Germany is 14 is a bit misleading – 14 year olds can drink Beer or Wine in public only if with a parent/guardian. They can buy Beer/Wine at 16, but can’t buy/drink spirits in public until 18.
It’s ok if she cuts you off before you get all sloppy.
YES
No, she’s a good mom. She knows that if you like drinking, you’re gonna do it whether she wants you to or not. Because my mom doesn’t condone drinking, I have to lie to her and drink unsupervised. Unsupervision leads to a whole host of problems like drinking too much. Also, if something happens, she wouldn’t even know where I was. It would be a whole lot safer if I could just drink in the basement where she knows where I am, rather than having to drive somewhere else to drink.
My mom was the same way, let me start having an occational drink when I was 14. Your mom has to be very careful in the states though. If it gets back to someone at the school they would call child services and you could be taken away and/or your mom could go to jail. Or, there are many senarios that could happen where she could be sued and she could lose everything she owns.
There is nothing ever wrong with drinking as long as it is Responsible drinking. Key word is responsible. America it seems that anyone that drinks is an alcoholic, where as in Europe it is more common.
I THINK SHE IS TRYING TO LEARN YOU A LESSON SO IF YOU TAKE SOME AND TOO MUCH U WILL SEE WAT HAPPENS AFTER THROW UP AND ALL . IT COULD ALSO BE BECAUSE IN EUROPE THEY LET YOU.
Why don’t you ask a cop if she is a bad mom.I think you know the answer.
No. Not at all.
Actually it means your mother is paying attention to you and guiding you. Something most parents in the US simply do not get. I applaud her for her actions. She is teaching you about alcohol rather then you making mistakes (sometimes deadly) from your peers. There is nothing wrong with what she is doing.
And depending on where you live it can be quite legal. It is legal in Texas were I live and raised my daughters. And yes I allowed them to drink with me when they were younger. They did not have a problem with binge drinking, did not get drunk and taken advantage of, and are very responsible about their drinking. I would like to think my wife and I had some part in teaching them responsibility.
Telling your children (and young adults) not to drink while you do is hypocritical. Any parent who thinks their children will learn it on their own is being reckless. What your mother is doing is perfectly fine.
Be carefull what you write, “lots” of kinds of people read this stuff.
You dont want your Mom getting hauled off to prison do you?
You better stfu…..
