Is there any harm done to a baby if the mother drank quite a bit at a party at the time of ovulation?
August 15th, 2010I know there isn’t even an attachment to the mother until 5-6 weeks but can the alcohol affect the fertilized egg at all???
I just want to see what others think because my sister is trying to get pregnant and she plans on drinking beers at a get together at about the time she would be ovulating. She is concerned if she shouldn’t try this time around because she will be drinking.
Once is the egg is released, it’s floating free to the fallopian tube. So no alcohol would get to it at all.
(Still, it’s not a good idea to get wasted ANY time, whether she’s trying to get pregnant or not.)
I’m not sure if it would affect it, but all doctors will tell you not to drink if you are trying to conceive. If she cannot refuse the alcohol, she is not ready for a child. If she really wants a baby, she should try to do her best to make sure that a future pregnancy and child are safe. Drinking while attempting to conceive is not responsible.
The bad effects from alcohol are greatest later in a pregnancy. Of course it is best to eliminate it when ttc, but there is no catastrophic damage from one time.
It’s a crap shoot. If you drink scads of alcohol and an egg was fertilized and was developing, yes, you can cause damage to the developing embryo. However, a couple of beers or a couple of glasses of wine is not an issue. We are TTC and while I normally only have one glass of wine or a bottle of beer once or twice a week, as I approach ovulation, I don’t have any. Just not worth the anxiety.
