My mother was smoking when she was pregnant to me.Is it possible I’m addicted to nicotine since that time?

I’m 26 now and a smoker as well.I grew up in a heavy smoking family.I may also have obsessive compulsive disorder.Could this be because of my mother’s smoking when I was in the womb?

   Why is it that you look EXTERNALLY for things that are yours alone to choose?

   Personal Responsibility – and blaming your environment – or the ozone – or your race – or creed is ONE THING…

   No. You smoke most likely because you were around it all your life. You’re more likely to become a smoker when you grow up with family members that do smoke simply by becoming socialized and accustomed to the habit of seeing it. As for your OCD I doubt that your mother smoking while you were in the womb caused that.

   As far as I know, smoking when pregnancy does not make your baby addicted to smoking, but increases the chances of learning difficulties, hyperactivity, ect.
   However if a mother is taking drugs, her baby could be addicted to drugs as well.

   I think your current addiction to smoking is merely based on the environment your living in. Since you grew up in a heavy smoking family, you are used to inhaling nicotine around you. Nicotine: a substance in cigarettes which makes it addictive.

   Yes to the smoking, both exposure in the womb and as a child have been shown to produce permanent changes that make the child more likely to smoke. OCD, I don’t think so, at least I haven’t seen any evidence of it. There’s some thought that OCD is a consequence of high fevers in childhood, and strep — it’s interesting enough so that you might want to do a web search.

   Also, don’t forget that the potential for nicotine addiction is genetic and inherited.
