Why does my Mother keep coughing?

My mother is addicted to tobbacco, She is in complete denial. She is allways coughing, At night and after smoking. She says it’s a cough yet she has had it for over two years now. I convinced her to go to the doctors, She said the doctors said Her throat was swollen and he gave her antibiotics and sent her on her way. I am not convinced.. We know it isn’t lung cancer or anything to serious due to her being screened a few years ago.
What could it be? She smokes roughly 20 cigarettes a day, maybe more.
because she is smoking to much.. duhhh..
tell her 2 stop or she is going to die
I cough a lot, too and I’m a non-smoker.
Mine is due to sinusitis and a post-nasal mucus drip
Depending on how old she is, she’s probably developed COPD or Emphysema. But had she, seems like the doctors would have old her that. There’s something horrible going around as I’ve had a cough for months and months, and I don’t smoke.
