Real Justice Keeps Kids Out Of Prison

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

The numbers are staggering, youthful offenders under the age of 18 account for over twenty percent of all violent crimes. In the last ten years juvenile arrests for violence have increased by 75 percent while arrests for weapons violations increased by 103 percent.

So what do we do with these troubled kids who are committing violence? Put them in prison? And if so, for how long? And what about those who commit serious crimes in states that have the death penalty? Do we write off these young lives as unsalvageable? At what age are they past rehabilitation? Unfortunately, these dilemmas are playing themselves out in communities and courthouses all across the country.

You don’t have to look very hard to see the real life dramas. In California recently a 14-year old was arrested for killing a 15-year old boy.

The District Attorney in the case has said he’ll try the teen as an adult, and seek a life sentence against him. In twenty-years of practicing criminal defense and family law, I’ve witnessed countless families destroyed as mere kids succumb to a justice system that is far more destructive than benevolent, more punitive than rehabilitative.

And who is to benefit from all these lost children to society? This was one of the main questions I asked when I found myself being sucked into the Jesse James Hollywood death penalty case.

Here was this twenty year old facing the biggest life-or-death ordeal of his young existence, for allegedly ordering the abduction and murder of the fifteen-year-old kid-brother of his arch-nemesis in 2000. Four other youths, aged seventeen to twenty, had already been tried and convicted.

One was now on death row. Another served life in prison. And another was seventeen while being tried like an adult, and again, I asked, are we really better off now?In that case, the prosecutor had sought a ten-eyes-for-two type of justice.

The families of the youthful defendants had been devastated just like the victim’s family had and now the state wanted to mete out its own form of antiquated justice by killing their children or ordering them to prison forever. These acts would not enhance society or make the victim’s family whole.

No one would benefit by continuing the ripple effect of death and destruction. It had to be reversed.

That’s why, ultimately, I agreed to testify in the case.

And that’s why I’m telling everybody who’ll listen: I don’t want to see another death. I don’t want to hear about another mother devastated and childless. I don’t want to witness another family’s endless spiral into the abyss. To me, the issue isn’t how best to punish these troubled kids in unforgiving prisons or to seek vengeance against them by killing the worst off through state-sanctioned murder. The issue, to me, is’How do we help them now? And on the bigger palette, How do we reach our children even if it sometimes might have to be after the fact to teach them the skills necessary to live healthy and loving and productive lives. To stay out of trouble.

To make them feel loved and wanted.

It’s tougher being a kid now than at any other time in our history.

The world can be a very confusing and unforgiving place for someone who is not prepared.

Life is different now for our children than it was when we were growing up. And we, as parents and members of society, need to recognize those differences. We need to account for them. We need to work to instill a new set of values on our own lives values that will indirectly instill meaning into our children’s lives as they attempt to navigate the minefield of life.

We need to become what it is that we want them to experience.

Cases of Acid Reflux Disease in Children

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

An 11-year-old boy in Boston developed a Gastro esophageal reflux Disease (GERD). According to his mother, Cathy, it was the end of June in the year 2005 when his son developed a cough which usually happens during sleep, and even during daytime. It is only a short dry cough symptom. His pediatrician thought it was only allergy, however, when his son was tested, result showed that his son had no allergy. According to her, it was his son’s asthma that relates to GERD.

Studies show that GERD is likewise normal to infants and children like in adults, though this fact is often times being overlooked. The symptoms come in continual sickness, coughing, and other respiratory trouble.

Children are vulnerable to GERD because of their immature digestive system. Truth is majority of the infants grow out of GERD once they reach the age of one year old.

The medical specialists further stated that symptoms for children may come in difficulty in swallowing foods, or failure to grow. The doctors recommended that in situation like this it is best to lessen the amount of acid in the children’s stomach before it could lead to acid reflux, since this disease is not very curable in children.

However, the doctor suggested some approaches to avoid acid reflux on children; an example of these is burping the infant quite a few times during feeding, or letting the infant stay in an erect position for 30 minutes after nourishing.

Although, for a child ages three and up, doctors suggested to keep them off from sodas that includes caffeine like soft drinks, carbonated drinks,  spicy foods like peppermint, acidic foods like citrus fruits, too much chocolate, and fried and fatty foods. Ideally, establishing a healthy eating habit diet can really decrease the acid reflux in children.

It is also suggested that children will eat smaller meals before sleeping, if possible, do not allow them to eat two to three hours before sleeping, also, elevate the head of their bed for at least 30 degrees.

Further treatments include the use of H2 blockers; this is available in any drugs store. Prevacid, proton plump inhibitors, can also be used in treating acid flux for children.

However, if these treatments fail to stop the symptoms, other treatment method needs to be done. It is very atypical, but doctors’ recommends surgery, this is so far the best treatment for relentless symptoms which do not anymore counter to other treatments.

The Esophageal reflux surgery for children is designated for children who have had unsuccessful medical treatments, and continuous surgery is essential as the child grows.

Now, if you get confused whether when is the time to consult a pediatrician regarding acid reflux. The answer is you observe, observe the amounts of vomiting of the child, if it already comes out in green or yellow or appears to be like blood or coffee grounds, there difficulty in breathing after vomiting, and there is pain in swallowing, immediately consult a pediatrician before the symptom gets aggravated.
So to prevent the occurrence of this disease, stay away from the habit of leaning forward after eating, or worse, sleeping after taking a large amount of food.

Take note, advanced acid reflux disease has a great possibility to end serious medical complications, and it may lead to hospitalization.

Be keen of the possible symptoms so will not overlook it. Take care of your kids.

Darvocet-N – Relief from pain, available Online for you

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Darvocet-N is administered to patients suffering from pain, ranging from low to moderate intensity.  To get the best results follow the doctor’s advice: Take the right dose at the right time.  Keep it out of reach of children and drug addicts.  Darvcocet-N can be purchased Online; it is available in tablets of 50 mg and 100 mg.

Darvocet-N contains Propoxyphene Napsylate [opiate type which acts on specific brain centers to give relief from pain] and Acetaminophen [non-opiate, non-salicylate analgesic and antipyretic] that are both white, odorless, crystalline powders having a bitter taste; Acetaminophen is a little less bitter.  Propoxyphene is known to cause constipation, so it is important for the patient taking Darvocet-N to drink plenty of water, at least 6-8 glasses every day.  Darvocet-N can be taken with water, even food – if your physician advises.  Make sure that your food is rich in fiber content to overcome the problem of constipation, and exercise daily.  Set the time for your dose of Darvocet-N – as indicated by the doctor – and take it at the same time each day.  A missed dose can be taken as soon as you remember, but if it’s shortly going to be time for the next dose, then leave out the missed dose.

Darvocet-N, an opioid agonist, has a tendency to encourage psychological and physical dependence, and must be taken under a physician’s advice.  Once treatment has started, patients should not stop taking the medicine on their own; only the doctor can decide when to do so.  Before treatment with Darvocet-N begins, the treating doctor must be informed of all the medicines the patient is taking, including vitamins-minerals-herbal remedies.  The physician must also thoroughly know the patient’s entire medical history, especially if there has been any serious disease related to any organ, if there has been a history of seizures/ depression/head injury, if the patient has difficulty in urinating, is addicted to alcohol, is above 65 years, is allergic to Propoxyphene or Acetaminophen, or if the patient is taking anti-depressants/sedatives/water pills/birth pills [by mouth], so that the doctor can decide the precise dosage to be given.

As with any other medicine, Darvocet-N also has side effects, which may include dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, skin rashes, headaches, diarrhea, euphoria, dysphoria, fatigue, influenza-type of illness, visual blurring, hepatomegaly, gastrointestinal bleeding, hallucinations, convulsions, confused state leading to abnormal behavior, cardiac or respiratory arrest.

The maximum prescribed dose of Darvocet-N 50 [50 mg Propoxyphene Napsylate and 325 mg Acetaminophen] is 12 tablets a day [2 tablets once in every 4 hours]; while the maximum prescribed dose of Darvocet-N 100 [100 mg Propoxyphene Napsylate and 650 mg Acetaminophen] is 6 tablets a day [1 tablet once in every 4 hours].  An overdose of Darvocet-N alone, or combined with alcohol/any CNS depressants, can be fatal.  Patients should heed their doctor’s advice and never increase the stipulated dosage on their own.

Those who drive or operate heavy machinery should avoid doing so until they are sure of how Darvocet-N effects them, as this medicine makes people feel sleepy.  For the same reason, elderly and debilitated patients are given the lowest prescribed dose.  Doctors don’t usually give it to pregnant women or nursing mothers.  This medicine should be kept away from children, pets and drug addicts.  The medicine should be stored as instructed.  Darvocet-N benefits you by providing relief from that horrible pain, but follow your physician’s advice.
