Cellulite Reduction – How to Reduce Cellulite in the Body?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

You’d have spent hours contemplating the best method for the reduction of cellulite. Well, the research isn’t complete without knowing the causes of the accumulation of fat cells on any one region of the body.

The most common cause for this condition is the accumulation of fat beneath the skin tissues. These fat deposits push the skin outwards making it appear like an orange peel. The condition is observed more commonly in women than men. Other reasons for the occurrence of this condition include genetic influences. You may inherit it from your mother and all your siblings are just as likely to suffer from this dilemma. Hormones can also be responsible for the condition.

So what would be the best method to avoid this condition? There are a lot of options available for the removal of the malady. These include surgical treatments such as liposuction and non-medical treatments such as diet control, regular workout, massage therapy and natural treatment creams.

Since the surgical treatments are a very costly option, you should consider going for 2-3 of the other options for best results.

First, work upon an exercise program, and follow it properly. Perform cardiovascular activities that are known to have plenty of health benefits for the human body. You should go for jogging, running, cycling and swimming as these improve your blood circulation and make the skin firmer against the condition.

You must control your diet and consume lesser saturated fats. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits and drink plenty of water. It is advised to drink a minimum of 7 glasses of water everyday. You should avoid highly processed foods as these have toxins that are harmful for the body and contribute to the condition.

Massage therapy is known to reduce the appearance of the orange peel, but will not remove it completely. Use a massage therapy on the infected region to improve the blood circulation of that part of the body. The therapy is also useful against water retention, which is one of the causes of this condition.

Last, you can treat the condition effectively with an anti-cellulite cream. The cream is very effective in fighting this condition and helps repair the damage caused by it to the body. The cream provides the useful nutrients that are helpful in replenishing the damaged skin to its original state. Other ingredients work on providing other health benefits to the skin and the overall body. This cream reduces the problem by getting to its very roots.

There are a number of other treatment methods available for this condition such as patches. The patches work just like nicotine patches, and are applied on the affected skin region. You can wear the patch to work if you like. The patch should stay on your body for 8 hours or so. Patches are a relatively newer treatment and very few people have started using them. Where some people are very satisfied with the performance of these patches, others do not share similar experiences and believe the patches to be wastage of time.

You are recommended to consult your physician before adopting any treatment method.

Cellulite is damaging your skin and confidence you need to act quickly to get the best results, the longer cellulite stays around the more life it squeezes out from your skin. By far the best cellulite gel is from Revitol, if you want more information about flawless skin visit http://www.cellulitetalk.org/.

Part 5 in a Series on the USS LIBERTY: “It was God that kept us afloat”

[Texas, December 20, 2007] On that other day in infamy: June 8, 1967, Lieutenant Richard Kiepfer, was the lone medical doctor on board the spy ship, the USS LIBERTY, who “with complete disregard for his own personal safety, exposed himself to overwhelmingly accurate rocket and machine gun fire…administered first aid…treated [171 wounded] men for pain, shock…[and]conducted a major surgical operation”[1]

Six weeks after boarding the LIBERTY and fifteen minutes into the attack, while operating on a sailor to control his bleeding, Dr. Kiepfer received eleven shrapnel wounds into his abdomen, and shortly thereafter, a gun shot to his leg, burns and a broken knee cap. He remained on his feet and caring for the crew for the next twenty-eight hours and their spirits ever since.

This reporter visited with 70 year old Dr. Richard F. Kiepfer, a Catholic born and bred in Brooklyn, in his Texas home where the deer ignore the corn put out by his neighbors, for Dr. Kiepfer provides prime feed in his front yard. Obese raccoons dine on a daily feast of dog food and multiple cats eat better than mine, in his back yard. Friends, who check on the doctor daily, set the food out, for Dr. Kiepfer can no longer do what he once did.

A Master Bridge player while still in his teens, Dr. Kiepfer today continues to play the cards he has been dealt in life with aplomb and grace. In 1973 he nearly died in a plane crash after parachuting atop of Georgia pecan trees that ended his surgical career and the use of his right hand and arm.

“As I laid there and looked at my arm and failed every test to move it, I knew then I would never operate again and began to think about what I could do in life to continue to be useful, and decided on nuclear medicine. The pilot landed a mile away from me, and was impaled on a forest of pine trees.”

After twenty years in nuclear medicine he retired after suffering a heart attack and since then has suffered the loss of two wives, but not his sense of humor, which borders on the ribald. My weekend visit with Dr. Kiepfer in his home adorned with icons of St. Francis occurred only a week after his discharge from a rehabilitation center. He had spent the last six months recuperating from a below the knee amputation.

In an email from retired Commander David Ed Lewis [2] who had been the officer in charge of 195 men out of the total crew of 294 on the US LIBERTY, he wrote, “I know Doc has suffered more and complained less than anyone I know. Job didn’t have much on Doc…He has always dedicated his life to others and has never asked anything in return from them.”

The book of Job is a critique about the justice of God in light of the suffering of innocent people and finding meaning and value in that pain and playing the cards one has been dealt with in life without blaming God.

Being a retired nurse, I had many questions for Dr. Kiepfer, and utmost was what was left out of the Court of Inquiry: such as how could the deck log which documents the hours during the attack be so neatly written and list all the dead and wounded in alphabetical order within the hours of noon to four PM but make no mention of the many Israeli over flights that occurred during the morning before the attack.

Dr. Kiepfer explained,” The deck log was not written during the attack. Captain McGonagle signed off on the Log and that makes it legal, but not authentic. McGonagle was concerned that he would be blamed for the LIBERTY being in troubled waters. I told him, ‘Over my dead fucking body!’”

After the hellacious and unprovoked attack by Israel, they did indeed blame the victims. “Israel did identify the ship six hours before the attack…Israel did know that the ship was American and admitted to our government that they knew the ship was American; Israel claims only that the attacking forces failed to get the word…Modern diplomacy simply does not permit one to embarrass a “friendly” nation, even when that nation is caught red-handed with its torpedo in one’s ship…McGonagle [was] tormented by the idea that he was somehow responsible for the agony his ship and crew suffered…One top level theory holds that someone in the Israeli armed forces ordered the LIBERTY sunk because he suspected that it had taken down messages showing that Israel started the fighting [during the Six Day War]…typical of Israel’s casual attitude toward the episode, an attitude which suggested from the beginning that it was really our fault for being there [in international waters] in the first place…messages from Israel directly charged that a share of the blame was McGonagle’s…the Shreveport Times suggested…that our government was involved in a cover-up…and that the attack itself may have been conducted to prevent the ship [and the United States] from detecting the pending invasion of Syria”[3] which was scheduled for June 8th but implemented on June 9, 1967.

Dr. Kiepfer informed me, “McGonagle may have misremembered or may have not reported the over a dozen Israeli over flights that morning because he may have thought he should have abandoned our mission-which was to listen in on all communications. My opinion as a civilian is that the Court of Inquiry-which was to determine if the Navy was at fault- would have inquired why he didn’t get the LIBERTY out of the area since we could see the smoke from Al Arish, in Gaza.

“I was the only Medical Corp officer to be appointed Officer of the Deck-that means I was in charge of everything on the ship when the Captain was off duty. I stood mid watch from midnight to 4 AM the night before the attack of June 8, 1967 and all was quiet. I always slept until 7:29 because breakfast ended at 7:30. Beginning at sunrise to 8 AM, the bridge reported a couple of propeller driven aircraft overhead and by noon several more. At lunch people were talking about all the Israeli over flights, but nobody was worried; they were our friends. Afterwards, as usual I went to the ward room for coffee while the Corpsmen began the start of sick call and off duty officers pursued the national sport of sunbathing on the quarter deck.

“Lieutenant George Golden and I were together when the attack began and we thought a steam line had ruptured when we heard the first explosion. We both headed off to our general quarters stations as the announcement sounded that we were under attack. I assumed it was perpetrated by the Arabs or Russians. Understand that nobody could identify Mirage fighter bombers that travel at MACH One. Imagine as I say these words to you that the jets are a mile away, now they are overhead and now they are a mile away from us. That is how fast they travel.

“Fifteen minutes into the attack, while I was operating on a sailor and trying to control his bleeding, I was hit with eleven pieces of shrapnel into my abdomen. A rocket struck above the ceiling of sick bay and the light over my head and the operating table protected me; both acted as a life saver for me, otherwise I would have gotten hit in my shoulders, side and back. I was knocked against a wall and waves of red and white pain throbbed through me.

“I knew I had to finish with the guy on the table-if I walked away, I wouldn’t have returned. All I could think about was keeping limbs attached to sailors. From the moment the attack began, I felt a greater presence within me that was physically holding me up. I thought it was the spirit of all the navy docs who had gone before me. I felt physically held up by my invisible assistants and with all that adrenalin coursing through me and some carefully titrated morphine that I self injected, I was able to do what I did.

“It was not until I finished that operation did I even examine myself. The fragments that penetrated me were so hot they cauterized my wounds. The pain was intense, but after applying surgical dressings to my wounds and putting on a life vest to control the bleeding I gave myself a shot of morphine and remained on my feet and working for the next twenty-eight hours.

“Just before the torpedo struck, I was summoned to the bridge and went through the mess decks from sick bay, where a number of wounded sailors were. Captain McGonagle was the only man still functioning there, the lookouts were dead, the helmsman-the guy at the steering wheel was dead and I saw the blown apart remains of our Navigator, Mr. Toth, two decks below me. All I could do was administer morphine to the still living and get them onto stretchers to evacuate them. I had two Corpsmen working with me and knew I needed more surrogates, for the wounded were shoulder to shoulder the full circumference of the passageway.

“While I was on the deck, I got hit by a fifty caliber machine gun bullet to my leg that came from the torpedo boats. I was bleeding into my shoes and not until the next day when I was able to lie down did the bleeding slow down. You know the story of the Incredible Hulk and mother’s who lift cars off of their kids? When you are angry and hurt you can do amazing things.

“If you got one hundred people into my skin that day, probably all of them would have thrown up from the hell that erupted on the LIBERTY. Men were groaning and crying for their mothers, but it was just background noise for me. I was slip sliding as I crossed the bloody deck to get to the Captain who had been hit. McGonagle was leaning back in the Captain’s chair, bleeding from many orifices; some natural and some new ones. I applied battle dressings, started an IV, gave him some morphine and sent an enlisted man to find as many officers as possible to come up to the Bridge and assist him and to watch him for shock. The Captain said, ‘If I sit up, I pass out, but as long as I stay in this position, I am OK.’

“People I had eaten lunch with were dismembered all around me, burned, dead. To this day, every time I have a phone conversation with Phil Tourney, who held the light while, I was operating on Blanchard [4] he tells me he can still see the look in my eyes.

“Everyone in the Navy hierarchy knew we were scapegoats and the Navy would have done anything to exact retribution, but the Navy never got the chance.

“In LBJ’s mind we were just an average day’s losses in Vietnam. I doubt Israel would have attacked without the knowledge or complicity of our State Departments willingness to sacrifice a few hundred sailors to have a ‘stabilized’ Middle East and all that oil. Our State Department’s morality and ethics are just slightly below those of a Madame in a house of ill repute or a large scale drug dealer.

“June 8, 1967 was like July 4th in hell without the ice cream…and yes, I agree that it was God that kept us afloat.”

Herbal Plant Medicines and the Shamans of the Amazon Rainforest Part 2

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Howard G Charing, and Peter Cloudsley join Amazonian Shamans, Javier Arevalo and Artidoro in discussions about the medicinal & spirit healing plants and their use.

Rosa Sisa

These are a kind of Marigold, and they are used in baths particularly for children with ‘mal aire’. This malady occurs when a family member dies and leaves the child unhappy and sleepless. The spirit of the dead grandfather – or whoever it was – lingers and makes the child sick. The spirit is sad to go and stays in the house after the person is buried and it tries to caress and comfort people in the family. This makes them ill.

Rosa Sisa also controls vomiting in general, as well as being used in floral baths for good luck.

Typically an envious neighbour will grab a handful of earth from the cemetery and throw it into your house to spread boredom and heavy feelings.

Again, when something is wrong in the house – people are bored or agitated – you get a bucket of water and add crushed Rosa Sisa flowers and Camalonga and wash the floors of the house with a brush to cleanse it.

Alternatively you could have the flowers in a vase in the house for the same purpose. Many people grow them either side of the front door of their house to absorb the negativity of people who look in enviously to see what possessions they have. The flowers go black but later they recuperate themselves.

Marigolds can also be used for making wishes, blowing with the wish in mind – like we do with a dandelion – because it is yellow, the colour of the sun.

Manchare or susto (fright) are maladies commonly suffered by children, and treated with Camalonga – a tree which grows wild in the forest, but many people grow it in flower pots in the city. It smells like onions and garlic and can be macerated in alcohol to be rubbed onto the person. In cases requiring soul retrieval a prayer or chant would be used at the same time.

Typically a child gets Manchare when playing in the trees and jump down to the ground and receive a much bigger bump than they expected. In this case the Rosa Sisa is tied into a bunch with a white ribbon and brushed all over the body from the head down. This is because the spirit returns through the crown of the head. A little prayer is said to invoke the spirit back, using the name of the child.

It can be used in emplasts for fevers too.

Huairacaspi

It comes in two varieties, a high tree with a thick trunk and a small slim tree with little leaves. It is the same tree as tornillo which is good timber. The branch can be bent double without breaking, and is good for doing yoga and for flexibility in general.

It is good for prolepses, chronic diarrhoea, hepatitis, arthritis, broken bones, and cold in the body. As a teacher plant it is good for disorientation, and sense of being lost.

After drinking you need to take a shower as it makes you sweat out all the toxins.

Ushcaquiro

This plant is very little known and used. Like chuchahuasi, it is good after operations, mothers caring for their babies, vaginal discharge, cancer, cold. It is prepared in water or alcohol. Painkiller.

Ushcaquiro, Huairacaspi and Chiricsanango together make a good treatment for arthritis.

Guayusa

Has a female spirit and makes you dream of beautiful things and takes the laziness out of you.

Albaca

This is good to have in the house, it works better than an aerosol spray for fresh air because the flowers burst into flower with a perfume. Also good for floral baths to make you smell good so you attract lots of friends. Also if you have a row with a friend, they will come back to you. In cases of gastritis, appendix or gale-bladder problems you can take it as a tea.

Even when dry is still smells.

Shimi Pampana

Is a root like a potato and a constituent of Pusanga. It comes in male (white) and female (red) forms and tastes like yucca. It is very good for people with excessive anger. You grate it to get the juice, and put it in soup, coffee or whatever and sometimes it is put secretly into a person’s drink to calm them down, especially when there is a lot of arguing in the family. You can bathe in it too. The dry powder obtained from drying the root, is good for sun burn, common in summer when the river is low and people go to the beautiful beaches to swim. It takes out the impurities of the skin without desiccating it.

More About Depression and Illness

Suffering A Stroke And Feeling Hopeless

Getting severely depressed after having a stroke is not unusual. When my mother had her first massive stroke and I went to the hospital, tears were flowing down her face and she kept telling me, ‘I don’t want to live’. My mother was always a very proud, independent woman.  She did not want to depend on anyone. She was depressed and very angry.  Nurses did not want to come into her room because she would not play the game and act grateful because she was unhappy. No one discussed depression with me, not her doctor, not her neurologist.  But I knew how bad it was. The depression had to be treated if my mother would ever get rehabilitated.

People who have a stroke need very much attention and love. They feel helpless and hopeless.  Recently a neighbor of mine had a stroke and when I went to the hospital, she too was crying and so sad. She is a widow who prides herself on being independent at age 86. The problem with her situation is that she was depressed for at least a year prior to the stroke since her husband had died. When the stroke hit her it was double trouble.

Treatment for depression can shorten the rehab process, lead to quicker recovery, and save health care costs.  It makes so much sense that it’s hard to believe that doctors don’t seem interested in explaining this to family members right up front. Depression is something that stroke victims deal with a large majority of the time. Even though stroke is a disease of the brain, it can affect the entire body. Some of the disabilities that can result from a stroke include paralysis, thinking problems, speech problems, emotional difficulties, fatigue, and daily living problems. Many people require psychological help after a stroke. Depression, anxiety, frustration and anger are common in stroke victims. It depends on the person and what his or her life has been like so far. If you know someone who has had a stroke, you know recovery is a slow and long lasting process.

If you or your loved one has a stroke, be prepared for damage to that person’s self image and self esteem.  It is very common for stroke victims to feel they have no future.  Make sure that anti depressants are part of the program for anyone you care about who has a stroke. Insist that the doctor find the right combination of meds. Maybe it will take some time but you and your loved ones are worth it. Depression can be treated in addition to whatever other illnesses a person might have, including stroke. If you think you may be depressed or know someone who is, don’t lose hope. Seek help

Depression and Parkinson’s Disease

It is very sad to know that at least half the people with this disease experience depression. First they are the victim of one horrible disease, and then they suffer from depression. The person who has it, their families, friends, and doctors so often misinterpret the warning signs of depression and just think it is part of the other disease.  Men in particular do not want to say that they are depressed as a result of this illness.

Symptoms of these two illnesses tend to overlap each other. Not enough research has been done on relationship between these two illnesses. People with depression who have Parkinson’s disease have a different symptom group than those without Parkinson’s. The Parkinson’s profile includes higher rates of anxiety and sadness without guilt or self-blame.

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive disorder of the brain. It affects the motor system, but also thinking and emotion. It results from the loss of brain cells that control movement. The four primary symptoms of Parkinson’s are:  trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; stiffness of arms and legs, slowness of movement, and poor balance and coordination. Plus it causes difficulty walking and talking.

Anything which can help these victims and lift their sprits is needed ASAP. Antidepressants can be extremely helpful for anyone dealing with Parkinson’s. Treating depression can help anyone feel better about and cope better with their illness.  Doctors of Parkinson’s patients need to devote the time and energy to finding the right prescription and right dosage. Be sure you insist that the doctor is “on it” and the help is given. As usual, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don’t hesitate to demand the care you need.

Depression can and should be treated when it co-occurs with other illnesses. Untreated depression can delay recovery from it or worsen the outcome. If you or someone you love has Parkinson’s disease, don’t give up and don’t lose hope. Depression is a treatable disorder of the brain. Depression can be treated in addition to Parkinson’s. Get the help you need, even if you have to demand it.

Understand Anti Aging Skin Care Guide, the Easy And effective Way

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Juggling in between the busy working lifestyle and preserving youth, an effective protocol to follow in an anti aging skin care guide should be simple. Cumbersome procedures will only make you feel like doing a normal routine boring chore, and not enjoying keeping up with that. Merely spend a short 30 minutes or less each day with a green mask on your face, simplify some sensible tips, enjoy and appreciate it, and you’ll keep your skin looking young for years to come.

Of course, there are varieties of products out there, but only some very effective products that can be classified as an anti aging skin care treatment, which we’ll discuss and elaborate these in more detail.

It is important to maintain Healthier and Younger Looking Skin, and it always begin with internal of our body.

Drinking Enough Water ………..

This might sound like grand mother story, but what has it got to do with skin care since everybody drinks water every day?  The true undeniable fact is, the best anti aging skin care treatment is to drink plenty of water throughout the day. The tips of course are most people don’t get enough pure water. Pure as the nature intended. Clean, filtered water, not stuff you pour from the tap which can actually harm your health. If you see the correlation between our bodies consist over 70% water, and the skin being the largest organ of the body. In order to keep your skin hydrated and looking its best all time, consume minimal of 8 glasses of water a day.

Balance Diet Plan …….

Any anti aging skin care guide will only work at its optimal level if it work together with the importance of diet. Dieticians constantly advocate a diet rich in dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli which are rich in antioxidants, will enhance and improve the radiance of your skin. Most aging processes in the skin are caused by free radicals. These are highly destructive molecules that move around our body, and as such, the skin, and damage our cells. The damage caused by free radicals to skin cells accounts for a lot of the signs of aging we see. Having a balance diet plan, especially on dark, leafy green vegetables will help to counter the effect of aging.

Now you would have prepared your body with a good body system with sufficient water and a balance diet work internally. The next step is to look at the “external” anti aging skin care treatment.

Skin Care Products …….

As always been described as “secret weapons”; a high quality anti aging skin care treatment cream. That’s nothing more important than learning the effect of its ingredients which can help to preserve your youth. Instead of just buying the “brand” and not knowing what “ingredients” actually works to the effect.

A good skin care cream with the highest quality ingredients should achieve the following:

1. Stimulate new collagen and elastin production, which are two major components of skin contributed to youthful appearance. Collagen and elastin break down and our body produce less as we age. Special substances like Phytessence Wakame and Nanobelle CoenzymeQ10 boost the body of its production of collagen and elastin. Only collagen manufactured by your body is to be effective.

The true fact:- Direct external application of Collagen will not work as some anti aging skin care treatment creams would have you believe. Our skin is not able to absorb it as the collagen molecules are too large.

2. It should hydrate your skin and helps keep your skin moise and soft. Prevent dry, chapped, or cracked skin.

3. Ingredients that can “erase” fine lines and wrinkles and help even out color inconsistencies caused age spots.

Skin Natural Nutrition – Sun Light = Vitamin D

Receiving sun exposure is in fact healthy and beneficial beside giving you the looks of energetic and wilderness. Over sun-tanning it is going to do more harm than benefit! During strong sunny days, it is advisable to wear some shade to protect your face. Relying on too much sunscreen will have it adverse effect! Most Sunscreen contains certain chemicals in it that are actually bad for the skin. Realizing why some sun exposure is good, but not too much. We will help you to understand the reasons.

As scientifically and clinically proven, sunlight helps our body to produce vitamin D, which is vital and contributed to our good health. But too much is bad for our major component of skin, called Hyaluronan. It’s one of the key substances in skin whose function is tissue repair and rejuvenation. In the process of aging, production of hyaluronan will be further deteriorated when we get too much exposure to sun; the UVB rays on sunny days actually damages the cells of our skin! Causing less and less hyaluronan to be produced by the skin (or dermis in scientific terms) and speed up the process of aging.

I can not stress enough that anti aging skin care tips which will only work to its optimal level by practicing the internal factor (water and diet), external factor (anti aging cream) and not forgetting to the effect of nature.

Who are you to judge?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

There are many versions to every story depending on how one prefers to narrate it. This is just one of those stories. There have been many epidemics that have plagued this planet but none has been as devastating as HIVAIDS. Over the past decade millions of precious human lives have been lost and most of these people are from our part of the world. The big question is, why? There are many responses to this question, religious, scientific and even mystic interpretations. The truth is that we are the answer and we are the cause. From the Christian religious perspective, it is believed to be one of the pestilences marking the end of the world. It is considered as one of the “signs of the times”. Scientifically, it is attributed to a retrovirus which causes degeneration of the immune system of the infected individual. The mystic interpretation is the rather weird notion that it is a spell that could be cast on another person by his enemy.

HIV has several potential modes of HIV transmission which include; MTCT (mother-to-child transmission/vertical transmission, which accounts for more than 95% of all cases of neonatal infections. Also, transfusion of HIV infected blood & blood products, sex among infected adolescents, sexual abuse of children, organ transplant, unsterile injection procedures, intravenous drug use, circumcision, Female genital mutilation and scarification.

Human beings are among God’s creation, the only species that kill their kind the most, but not everyone agrees with this fact. There is so much wickedness and neglect amongst us and it is spreading like a malignant cancer. Humans over time have moved themselves with their brief lives into state of chaos and we have lost the rhythm for living. There has been a lot heard about “reaching out” but are we practicing what we preach? Are we really reaching out? Each day at the serology lab, the number of positive cases recorded look like a long array of +s, it is a reality. Being diagnosed with HIV is an already devastating experience, especially when the individual cannot decipher how he or she got infected. Many people die under this terror most at times due to the lack of attention and care from family, friends and society. The reason being, we are only limited to the fallacy that these individuals have called their demise through promiscuity.

The most dangerous individuals in the world are not armed robbers or terrorists but those who have nothing to lose. There are already forty million infected individuals walking this planet and we have been part of the death of twenty million of these ones worldwide from the values. We have succeeded in rendering millions of children orphans worldwide too. We are sure to stay with this dreadful infectious disease for many more generations ahead till we Homo sapiens become extinct as a result. We are to be expectant of this as long as we continue make those infected feel like non entities and unwanted.

Anyone who by chance gets to know of someone’s positive status automatically out of despise shuns the company of the infected person and many others like you and me have done the same. The infected individual now feeling unwanted and dejected as a result of the rejection by society is thus propelled to move about and actively spread the virus to other people, and there have been cases to prove this. Thus, the rate at which the virus spreads reaches alarming rates, as in Uganda some time back. I believe that at least the most indigenous Ghanaian has some if not basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS. There is no point whatsoever to link HIV to some curse from the ancestors or some bad omen. It is true that about 80% of people infected got it from their infected partners, who in turn contracted it through sex outside marriage. How would you feel if you realized you got infected by someone with whom you have spent most of your adult years? Assuming even everyone who is infected was by promiscuity, still does not give us the opportunity to judge. Let us now stop and consider the following scenarios:

The caring nursing sister who got pricked by an infected needle while she tried to care for her patient

The Good Samaritan who helped out at the scene of a bloody fatal accident and got infected in the process

The naïve young girl, who attended a friend’s birthday party, had her non-alcoholic drink spiked and was taken advantage of by an infected individual she could not even identify

The faithful wife who got infected by an unfaithful husband

Those youth that was deceived that the condom was safe instead of abstaining

The woman or girl that was raped by infected assailants

The prison inmate who was sodomised by his infected fellow inmates

The innocent child that was born to an infected mother

The naïve boy or girl who got infected by engaging in a blood covenant with a partner who was infected although they never had sex

The mother and baby that got infected because the delivery was done by an infected midwife or one that used contaminated apparatus

The child that got infected by a ‘wanzam’ who used contaminated equipment during circumcision

The patient that was transfused with contaminated blood during an immediate urgent transfusion

The girl who went through gruesome pain and also got infected as a result of being circumcised using contaminated tools.

These are our brothers our fathers, our mothers, our sisters, our friends, our relatives both distant and near, you and me. We just happen to be among the lucky ones who are not infected or not yet infected. There have been countless situations where these patients have died before their actual time of expiration because they were not shown enough compassion, care and love. What happened to all the television advertisements about reaching out and caring for those infected. Research scientists have given us proof of the first cases of HIV in Ghana but who knows just how long this disease has been with us.

More people have died in the past two decades than in the holocaust, the Rwandan genocide and even in the 1st and 2nd World wars together, and this is not an exaggeration. It is time we tuned up with the vicissitudes of life and accepted these ones as we ought to and not to judge. The last time it was her, the next time it could be you or perhaps me. The last time it was them that got infected the next time it could be us. This generation has been plagued with many diseases already; do not let us hype HIV to the level of Ebola or SARS or their bacterial ancestor, the bubonic plague. There are anti-retroviral therapies including the famous HAART (Highly active antiretroviral therapy) with its attendant side effects. A HAART regimen typically combines a protease inhibitor-a powerful new anti-HIV agent that interferes with the last stage of HIV’s reproductive cycle-with two older anti-AIDS drugs that attack a different reproductive stage. Studies have shown that, in patients who respond to HAART, the treatment suppresses HIV levels in the body, slows the virus’s damage to the immune system, and even allows at least partial recovery of immunity. But, the most effective and inexpensive anti-retroviral drug is, what is known in my own medical terminology as ‘compassionvir’ which is highly effective in inactivating reverse transcriptase-bearing retroviruses. There is no need to monitor CD4+ T cell levels before the ‘drug’s’ administration as is normally done. In short, they need us and we need them. Yes, we talk, we write but do we act? Or we just pretend to care under the guise of charity organizations and NGOs. We should know that actions speak louder than words. It was said by one that, God should not have rested on the seventh day of creating the earth, but that he should have used it to create compassion. It is up to us to unlock and project this awesome God-given compassion to the world.

There are many innocent individuals who have been died before their time. I think the problem here is not them but some of us self-righteous egotists who look down on HIV -positive individuals and AIDS patients. We do not care for them because we want to look religious or it supposedly sounds morally right. There is only one reason why we should not judge but care and that is because we just simply care.

What can she do about her aching joints?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Question:

My mother is almost 70 years old and very active, fit and well. The only thing that spoils her retirement is that her joints are agonizingly painful when she wakes up, leaving her bent double for a long time. She finds setting the alarm to take ibuprofen an hour before she gets up helps her to become mobile more quickly. What do you suggest? She is against taking the ibuprofen continuously.

Answer:

Your mother’s ‘early-morning stiffness’ is a characteristic symptom of arthritis, a condition where the joint surfaces become inflamed. I suspect your mother has osteoarthritis rather than rheumatoid arthritis. With the later autoimmune disorder, the pain and stiffness in the early morning is unbearable. With osteoarthritis, which is usually due to wear and tear and/or to nutritional problems, the pain is usually less severe. However, if people with osteoarthritis don’t sleep well, the pain threshold becomes lower and the discomfort can be severe.

In fact, although ‘osteo’ means bones, it’s not the hard bones of the joint that suffer inflammation but the synovial membrane that covers then. The membrane is soft because it is supplied with numerous blood vessels and contains nerve endings. (Although bone marrow is rich with blood vessels, they can’t penetrate the bone itself.)

The signs of inflammation are swelling, redness due to the body sending more blood to the area to help it heal, heat as enzymes are released it destroy unwanted cells (and increased blood supply), stiffness, pain and loss of function – in this case, loss of movement in the joints.

During the day, as you move around, the blood circulation everywhere in the body is improved. This removes the stagnant blood in the inflamed joints, and brings in fresh oxygen, protein, glucose and hormones to keep down the inflammation.

When you slow down in the evening, however, the circulation becomes sluggish until the early hours. Then, at around 4am, the adrenal glands release the maximum amount of cortisol (one of the body’s steroid hormomes0 in preparation for daytime activity. The cortisol helps blood flow and invigorates all parts of the body, but it exacerbates the problems of arthritis sufferers because already inflamed joint surfaces get a surge of blood and swell; the inflammation increase, and the joints become stiff and sore. People feel pain at different times, depending in the fluctuations of various hormones in the body. Backache sufferers, for example, feel it more in the early hour of the morning, as do those with abscesses, sinusitis and colitis. This is because during the night the circulation slows down and does not clear the problem areas.
In order to relieve the pain, your mother needs to look after her joints with following regime:

* Eat lots of oily fish (salmon, sea trout, tuna, sardines, herrings, pilchards), avocados, olive oil, garlic and ginger.

* Avoid coffee and excess salt as they cause constriction of blood vessels and impair the healing of inflamed joints.

* Avoid citrus and sour fruits (orange, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, mangoes, tomato juice, passion fruit), which increase aches and pains in the body.

* Avoid yeast products, mushrooms, cheese and ready-made sauces; these contain fungus that will cause fermentation and prevent healing. For the same reason, avoid acidic white wine and champagne; drink other alcohol in moderation only, and cut right down on sugar and sugary foods.

* Avoid hot, spicy and fried foods, which cause excess stomach acid.

* Avoid red meat, shellfish and offal, which are generally not good for joints.

The following treatments should help

* Haldi is an Ayurvedic anti-inflammatory: take one twice daily for three months.

* Guggal is an Ayurvedic supplement for arthritis: take one twice daily for three months.

* Massage the tissues surrounding the joints with my Joint Oil or Massage Balm. Rub until the oil or balm is absorbed. This will help the inflammation. Massage the muscles above and below the affected joints too. This is best done at bedtime, leaving the oil to soak in overnight.

* Practice therapeutic yoga regularly, particularly the cobra. Boat, swing, turtle and semi-bridge poses.

Getting Rid Of Bad Breath The Easy Ways – In 2 Days Or Less

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

By the time you finish reading this, you will be on your way to start taking action on getting rid of bad breath. Having a bad breath is really an unpleasant thing to happen to you. Can you blame other people because you have this problem? No. The reason you are having a bad breath is entirely on you and you only have to blame yourself.

Getting rid of bad breath is not as difficult like quitting smoking. Bad breath occurs because of the things or foods you eat. You may not realize this but sometimes your favorite food is one of the cause you are having such a smelly breath. So what is the food you should reduce to get your fresh smell back? Try to reduce food with high protein.

Also, do not eat onions and garlic to often since this can only bring trouble to you at the later end. Eat fresh vegetables a lot as this will aid to reduce the bad breath and plus, vegetables are good for your health. Ever wonder why your mom ask you to eat lots of vegetables when you were child?

You may not know this but by drinking a lot of plain water can really help you in getting rid of bad breath. Study has shown that a normal adult human being should drink at least 1.5 liters or 8 glasses of water per day.

To have a fresh breath all the time, it is best to brush your teeth in the morning, after every heavy meals and at night. Make sure the toothpaste you use has the cavity protection.

To protect your teeth even further, use some mouthwash and gaggle it for 30 seconds or 1 minute depending on your level of bad breath. Mouthwash is a good cleaning product because it can kill the plaque that brushing alone cannot reach.

Substance Abuse Prevention Speaker & Drunk Driving Detour Speaker: Escape the Death Trap Before You Self-Destruct

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Substance abuse prevention speakers take the topic seriously, but sometimes I wonder just how many others do? I suppose as a substance abuse prevention speaker who knows the pain and torment personally from an experiential level, I am more apt to see the danger in substance abuse and drunk driving.

I grew up the son of a mother (a former high school cheerleader and honor graduate) who was an alcoholic and substance abuser. As a child I saw my beloved mother self-destruct and torment my grandparents as a result of alcoholism and using every drug imaginable. Ironically, my mother (a former drunk driver herself) was killed when crossing the road as a pedestrian when an 18 year-old drunk driver hit her – killing her on impact.

Dead on arrival, police awaited the return of the young drunk driver who left the scene of the accident. Upon returning, the police video (which I later painfully watched) showed the young man crying and screaming, “I can’t live with this on my mind!”

As a former lifeguard and fitness trainer I don’t drink alcohol to this day. Yet I don’t condemn those who do and kindly serve as the designated driver whenever anybody close to me drinks.

After a childhood of pain and hell as a result of substance abuse and drunk driving, I myself was hit and nearly killed in July 2008 by a drunk driver (a two-time DUI offender driving after her license was revoked). The 61 year-old lady barreling down the road in a large Chevy truck, driving drunk at 4:40PM on a Tuesday afternoon, hit my car repeatedly (completely totaling it and nearly killing me) without stopping, attempting to flee the scene of the accident, after which she hit and totaled a parked car before being arrested by police.

For nearly five months I drove numerous rental cars, while battling my insurance company to be financially compensated to purchase a replacement vehicle for my automobile totaled by the negligible drunk driver. Even worse I spent days and nights in hospitals and doctors’ offices receiving medical treatment after the accident for injuries, which still cause me pain and trouble to this day. The added stress and strain medically and financially also negatively affected my marriage, as logistically my wife and I shared the one vehicle the drunk driver totaled.

Personally encountering the crooked and fraudulent business practices of tow truck companies, medical professionals, insurance claims adjusters, and car salesmen added additional aggravation and suffering to my life at a time when I was most vulnerable.

Nevertheless I somehow persevered and battled through it all to stand tall, becoming a voice of conscience to substance abusers, drunk drivers, they who prey on victims of catastrophic accidents, and those suffering through seasons of tragedy turning their world upside down.

I guess God spared my life so I can speak to others.

Ayurvedic Massage Therapy

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Massage Therapy is a combination of science and art which provides a relaxing experience by artistic hand strokes on the body to rejuvenate the mind and body and eliminate stress scientifically.

Nowadays, people of all ages are increasingly considering Ayurveda therapies as a way to encourage an improved sense of well-being and as a means to a long, happy and harmonious life free of illness.

Ayurvedic massage therapy works on both the physical and mental levels, transmitting a life-giving energy that assists all systems of the body to repair and renew themselves. Ayurvedic massage practitioners concentrate on the subtle energy points (like in Shiatsu), that respond to gentle physical manipulation, and with the needs of the different body types. The author guides both the novice and the practitioner through each step of the full body and explains which massage oils and massage techniques work best for particular body types.
