Mohammad and the Phenomenon of Colorism

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Colorism is a famous international phenomenon of discrimination, where human beings are accorded different socio- economic status and treatment based on their skin color. White supremacy is a man made belief that those whose skin color is “white” are the superior or the master race.

The root of Colorism

For many scholars, though, the mysterious story in Genesis (9) describing how Noah cursed the descendants of his son Ham with servitude remains a way to discover the complex origins of the concept of Colorism

Genesis 9:18-27

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth. 20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father’s nakedness.24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.” 26 He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. 27 May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave.”

Ham came to be widely described as a black person.

By the 19th century, many historians have the same opinion; the belief that African-Americans were descendants of Ham was a primary explanation for slavery among Christians.

However, the Negro Peoples fought for their rights.

The document of the: “Declaration of Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World.” Has been produced in 1920

In June 1963, USA President John F. Kennedy said:

“The Negro baby born in America has about one-half as much chance of completing a high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day, one-third as much chance of completing college, one-third as much chance of becoming a professional man, twice as much chance of becoming unemployed, about one-seventh as much chance of earning $10,000 a year, a life expectancy which is 7 years shorter, and the prospects of earning only half as much”.

Two years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s said at June 1965

“In far too many ways American Negroes have been another nation: deprived of freedom, crippled by hatred, the doors of opportunity closed to hope.”

Moreover, Recent News (between 2000-2004) reported that The European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC), argues that it is no longer acceptable to use skin color as an attribute to distinguish people,

Arabs and Colorism before Islam:

Before Islam, Colorism was widespread among the Arabs. The black person was inferior and most of the slaves were black and they had no human rights.

How did Mohammad ban Colorism?

It is known that the main sources of Islam are 1)the Noble Quran and 2) the sayings or the acts of the Prophet Mohammad.

How did the Quran ban Colorism?

One Creator and one origin:

This is based on the verse of the Noble Quran

[Surah 4: 1] the meaning of which is translated as:

“Oh mankind! Reverence your Guardian-Lord, Who created you from a single Person, created, of like nature, his mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women; fear Allah, through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (that bore you): for Allah ever watches over you”.

It means that all men are the creatures of one Allah Who created man from one origin (Adam and Eve). Therefore, men are all equal. Any discrimination based on color, class, race, or territory is unfounded and illusory. It is a remnant of the days of ignorance that chained men down to servitude. Humanity is one single family under Allah, and there can be no sanction for those barriers.

Also, Allah Created Man as an honored creature:

[Surah 17: 70] “We have honored the sons of Adam; provided them with transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance things good and pure; and conferred on them special favors, above a great part of Our Creation.”

Quran honored man and removes all the impositions of barriers and classes among the members of the Islamic society in order to enable them to enjoy and practice their legitimate rights. No color discrimination of any type is allowed in Islam.

The difference in colors is a sign of Allah the Almighty

[Surah 16: 13] “And the things on this earth which He has multiplied in varying colors (and qualities): verily in this a Sign for men who celebrate the praises of Allah (in gratitude).”

[Surah 30: 22] “And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the variations in your languages and your colors; verily in that are Signs for those who know.”

[Surah 35: 28] “And so amongst men and crawling creatures and cattle, are they of various colors. Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge: for Allah is exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.”

This means that the differences in our colors, plants colors, animals’ colors are signs from the Great Creator, Allah the Almighty.

Who is the honored of you in the sight of Allah?

[Surah 49: 13] “O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full Knowledge and is well-acquainted (with all things).”

The differentiation between individuals in the Sight of Allah is based on their levels of piety, righteousness, compliance of the Commands of Allah.

Islam declares all people equal in terms of human values. The only distinction between people is on the basis of service that the individual presents to his society and community.

Mohammad said:

“O people! Your God is one and your forefather (Adam) is one. An Arab is not better than a non-Arab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a white person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a white person, except in piety. “

The practical lesson:

It is also reported that one of the Companions of Mohammad (named Abu Tharr) who was white once said to black slave who served him, calling him as follows:

“Oh you are the son of the black woman”.

Upon hearing this call, Mohammad turned to Abu Tharr and said to him immediately: “Are you insulting this man with his own (black) mother? Truly, you still possess some of the ignorance of the pre-Islamic era. It is over. It is over. There is no virtue or merits for the son of the white woman over the black woman except for piety and righteousness or good deeds and actions”.

Abu Tharr upon hearing the comment of Mohammad put his head down on the ground for his slave servant to come and step with his black foot on his head although Mohammad did not command him to do so. Abu Tharr felt very bad and regretted what he did and that was the reason that urged him to lay his head on the ground for his black slave servant to step on it in retaliation and revenge for wh

Choices in Life

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

We all make choices everyday – some are easy, some difficult, some we remain happy about, others cause guilt and regrets. But, to make choices which are right for us and in society, we need information – without which choices are mere ‘guesses’ or ‘needs’.We should be prepared to learn and change our decisions if necessary as situations alter.

My childhood was during the Second World War and my teenage years were during the years of rationing. Besides the parental boundaries for our behaviour, we had other boundaries – from circumstances. We had no material possessions – no personal radios, no mobile phones, no TV, few toys, few books, no money, no central heating, buses for transport, no antibiotics,  few clothes ( they were rationed), and no computers, but also no drugs and no access to alcohol for teenagers and very limited , if any, access to contraception.

Virtually all children ate school dinners – gratefully, there was no junk food, no fast food, all had to walk a lot and very few were fat. We had little choice in many areas of life. But, as for every generation and mortal on this planet – then and now, we had choice in how we behaved.

We shall all be judged, eventually, by our behaviour, not our beliefs.

My grandmother lived down the road and I visited her as often as I could – usually daily. I loved her dearly. She was never cross, never moaned, always busy – slowly, as she had had a mild stroke and made special little loaves of bread for me. She always made me feel she was pleased to see me. But, she was sad and seldom smiled. Why?

In a time before family planning, she had ten children. Her only choice had been to marry the man she loved. She lost five babies to asthma and respiratory infections, and, at the time of my childhood, four of her remaining children were in service in the war – one son in Ceylon  (as it was called then), one in Burma, one in the Azores and a daughter in the ATS – somewhere in England. She had little reason to smile. Yet, there were no hysterics, no treatment for stress, no drug or alcohol taken, and she carried on with daily life – she had no choice. She could not tell the future – she did not know if they would return, as very many died on the fields of battle.

In my family we were fortunate. We had our parents and those members of grandma’s family (uncles and aunt) all returned safely. For us, and families all over the country, material belongings seemed of little importance in that context. People abhorred  and were frightened of debt and women cooked wholesome food from raw ingredients, baked with powdered egg – and grew whatever they could in small gardens.

But in a society that had nothing, and many choices had been taken away, then values were different and behaviour was different. There was much more respect – for parents and teachers, more obedience, sobriety, and endurance in young people in general.

I was ill a great deal in my childhood and adolescence – not my choice. I never thought I would live long enough to be loved, married and have children. But, I did and I have always cherished those I was able to call ‘mine’ and  valued my good fortune.  Despite the long illnesses, I had worked hard, gained a scholarship from school, gone to University and gained my medical degree. I put a career aside for the seven years my children were at home, and then worked part time, thereafter to fit in with school hours. That was my choice and I never had any regrets at that decision. It wasn’t a sacrifice, it was a privilege.

But in those years I did work some evenings per week, when my husband was with the children. I chose to work in Family Planning to help women to have choice. I opened three clinics –in different parts of the country as we moved with my husband’s job. In one town my nurse and I were not allowed to advertise the clinic and the notice was removed from the library. Such was the climate of opinion about our work. But we carried on.

During those years, the oral contraceptive was first brought onto the scene – offering an extra and effective option for preventing unwanted pregnancies. The aim of the doctors working in the clinics was to free women and to stop all  the ‘back street’ abortions – which were very painful, dangerous and often fatal. Unwanted pregnancies often resulted in the babies being adopted. This was a heart- wrenching trauma for the women concerned. So, we worked to give women freedom from such events, and to allow them to enjoy their lives and marriages without the fear or burden of more children than they wanted or could happily care for.

But, in this subject – what choices have been made in recent years?

Young women get pregnant without using the effective measures available. Abortions take place in large numbers in hospitals and in many cases girls may have more than one – choosing to use this as a method of birth control.

Not what most of us thought would happen! We sort of assumed, naively, that all young women would continue to value themselves and life and use what was now available. How wrong we were.

When I worked in psychiatry (for 35 yrs), I often saw depressed and grieving women who were suffering the after effects of an abortion – often many years previously. Most had had ‘no choice’ regarding contraception or some had been in the situation when their attempts at contraception had failed and a pregnancy was impossible to contemplate for various reasons. Their reactions were normal – a loss causes grief – with depression. Or, it should do – in women who have normal feelings.

What has caused such irresponsibility and present behaviour? Is it the increased intake of alcohol? Is it that both young men and women have not the same caring or deep feelings for their or another’s worth? I pose the question – not give the answer.

When my mother died, I was sorting her private papers. In a drawer I found some tiny white envelopes with a black line round the edge. I opened one and took out a tiny card which  I read, with tears, ‘My beloved Ben’. It was one my dear Grandma’s lost babies.

What would she have done to have been able to keep those children alive, care for them and spend time with them? She loved all her children and her grief lasted her life time.

I am not one to hark back to the ‘good old times’ – not at all. Even in my childhood times were difficult and harsh – and in winter, very cold. But we learn experience, good or bad, from the past. But, with all the advantages and choices in the present I feel that, in general, something is missing in those of our young people who drink excessively, have unprotected sex or take drugs. It has nothing to do with wealth or education – it happens across all levels of society.

Those who drink, have sex, or/and take drugs choose to do so.

Choice should be made with information added to feelings – ie the brain sorts the information and the ‘heart’ puts the ‘meaning’ into a choice. It appears that, in many, neither the brain nor the heart are being used – and harmful behaviour is being done as some kind reaction to peer pressure or society. The genital area or stomach are dominant in the decision, but neither of these areas have brain cells or can ‘think’.

I ask the question – is it really their choice or has society’s values in the last 20-30 years – of seeking material goods with hedonism rampant – let them down? Have many women lost the bonding with their babies – a bonding which makes separation difficult and material needs to fade, at least temporarily. A bond, which overrides personal gains and careers – for as long as is necessary.  A bond, which makes boundaries to keep their child or teenager safe.

I see teenage behaviour as a commentary on and the result of the care and commitment – or lack of it, of the adults who have looked after them.

I write, not out of criticism – it is neither my aim nor my right to do so – but from concern at what I see happening.  I worked for 35 yrs to help people come to terms with traumas – some of their own making. I am not a judge, but I was a therapist for a long time.

I have written a poetry book for teenagers called ‘Choice for Teenagers’ – to provide non-judgmental, metaphorical and entertaining help and observation at a difficult time of life and in a difficult time of society. It can be bought on my website – see below. It is an ideal book for ‘general discussion’ groups in secondary schools. It covers many aspects and issues of the teenage years – in a non judgmental way, yet imparting information and asking questions to challenge behaviour.

I cannot sit back in my retirement with the knowledge I have gained when I see a possible bleak future looming from the present mores of society. I write from concern for the future of many of the young people today. Choices are individual and everyone needs to decide their own path – but they must also live by those choices or be able to change them before it is too late. Some are going down a road where change will be impossible.

What is also needed is an acceptance in adults that young people do not have the knowledge or experience to make many of the best choices for themselves – if only ! Guidance is not enforcement. It is giving unselfish caring,  information, alternatives and support.

Delayed Gratification

Hal was on a trip away from home. Far enough to know that no one, meaning his wife, could possibly find out he was having the time of his life. The drinks were being charged to his new company expense account and for the first time ever – in a place like this – he was a hit. He was buying for two drop dead gorgeous women in spaghetti-strap dresses barely concealing their very obvious charms. They were pressing their breasts against his arms from either side and laughing in stereo at everything he said. He knew it was the money he was laying on the bar, but he didn’t care. He had earned it and it was what set him apart from other men. Tonight he was celebrating his appointment to Western Sales Manager. Top Dog, number one on the left coast and starting tonight he intended to upgrade his lifestyle to reflect it.

He raised his glass in a silent salute to the doctor-type glowering at him from the other end of the bar. Eat your heart out, Chump, he grinned to himself, now they are with me.

He threw his head back like Bogie in Casablanca and downed a shot of Makers Mark in one gulp. It burned all the way down and brought tears to his eyes. He wanted to grab his water chaser, but he wanted to impress the two women more so he kept his cool and looked at them in the mirror and gave them a wink. The one on the left was blonde. A Sharon Stone look alike and each time she pulled on his arm to whisper in his ear, he leaned over and snuck a peek down the front of her dress. Her breasts were perfect. Round and firm with her nipples protruding through the thin fabric like peanut M&Ms on softballs. He laughed and nodded as if he were listening, but all he could think about was touching her. He was sure that she could not possibly be wearing anything underneath her dress and images of her tanned, lithe, naked body kept synapsing across his brain like the midnight fireworks at Disneyland. He pulled his handkerchief and dabbed at the little beads of perspiration gathering on his upper lip. He had never been close to this before. Desire began to well up inside him. He wanted to run his hands all over her body – both of their bodies!

The brunette was every bit as tasty as her companion. Each time she looked up through her lashes at him or ran her tongue across her teeth he knew she thought him only as attractive as his money, but he didn’t care. He laid another hundred dollar bill on the bar and they both laughed. She bit her lower lip like the sexy models in the commercials and leaned in even closer putting her hand on his thigh. Her touch was at once both sensuous and electric. An indescribable thrill ran through him. Hal had never “scored” before, but he knew this was it. The kind of night he had only rarely dared fantasize about knowing it could never happen to someone like him. But tonight the world was different. Tonight he knew he couldn’t lose. It was good to be King.

The two women had been with the yuppie down the bar when Hal had come in flashing his bankroll and a new pinkie ring worth more than a new Cadillac. He had immediately taken over giving instructions like he owned the place and once the bartender got a look at the wad of hundred dollar bills he anticipated Hal’s every need and doted on him like royalty. Hal was thrilled, but tried to act as if he expected this kind of treatment. Like he

did this kind of thing every day – walked into trendy bars and picked up the best looking women in the place. He made sure his tips were frequent and generous enough to insure the bartender’s devotion. The women were obviously impressed.

Fortified with self-importance fueled by the combination of bourbon and attention, he looked around the room at the dark wood, etched glass and brass. Ties everywhere, beautiful women dripping with expensive jewelry, a tuxedoed trio playing Tre’-hip Jazz Fusion. The whole place reeked of money, sex and power. Not long ago Hal would have been too intimidated to even set foot in a place like this, but not tonight. Tonight he was carrying a bankroll the size of a Coke can and he was looking for some world class fun to spend it on. What else was money for?

Hal made a lot of money – more than anyone in this place, he was sure. Almost a half million so far this year. How many men in this room could say that? He looked around through half-closed lids with barely concealed contempt. Stockbrokers, Lawyers, Insurance Salesmen, what a bunch of losers, worker bees going nowhere fast. In a couple of years, he thought, I’ll be a multimillionaire. In another ten – who knows? Not like these guys grinding away every month to make the house payment and pay for the kid’s braces.

It had not always been this way. In fact, for most of his life a night like this had been no more than an unreachable fantasy. The kind of thing that happened to other guys. Handsome, charming, successful guys, not him. Hal had not had a single date in high school. He never played sports or belonged to a club. He was not invited to any parties and nobody but Hal’s mother noticed when his Senior picture ended up in the Junior class section of his high school yearbook.

Three months after graduation his grandparents set him up with a woman from their church who was seven years his senior and rented the studio apartment above their garage. It was the first date for both of them and they were married just over a year later.

For the next few years Hal paid his dues. He bounced around from one cheesy job to another. Life was a struggle then, living month to month, barely able to make ends meet, supporting a wife and three kids. If the car broke down or the washing machine went, it constituted a major financial crisis. It was a time of cheap clothes, shabby thrift store furniture and bill collectors. They bought day-old bread, powdered milk and whatever meat was on sale. His wife used to say life was like a shit sandwich and every morning she’d push him out of bed with the admonition to get up and take another bite!

Those were hard times. Hal toughed it out, though, finally landing at Valley Power, putting in an eight year stint as a meter reader. It was a hell of a grind. He had walked the streets with his little metal clipboard in all types of weather, dodging cars, kids on bikes, skateboarders and angry dogs, tediously recording the meters. He hung in through thick and thin – and at night he studied, determined to make something of himself. Determined to break out and become somebody.

For five long years he read diligently and took tests by correspondence to become licensed as a Certified Financial Planner. Meter reader by day – student by night. It had not been easy. He had to sacrifice. He had missed being with his family and dropped out of the church. After a while his friends had stopped inviting him places because he never had time or money to spend. He stuck with it, though, and in the end it paid off. Finally he was an official Certified Financial Planner.

Instead of studying at night he was now out selling life insurance and mutual funds. He worked at it five nights a week and all day Saturday and Sunday. Slowly it began to pay off and one great day he was able to walk away from Valley Power and go fulltime as a Financial Planner. It wasn’t long before he found out he was good at it. Really good.

His reputation grew. He started picking up bigger and bigger clients. His income jumped. He took up golf, bought his first brand new car and joined the Lions Club. He started shopping at exclusive mens shops and sported a Rolex. His increasing success brought him to the attention of his employer. Recognized as a top producer he was given special accounts and a liberal expense account. He was becoming important. People listened to him when he spoke. For Hal this was heady stuff. For the first time in his life he was experiencing what it was like to be a big shot.

But even as his business expanded his small circle of old friends diminished. This was not seen as a big issue for Hal. He simply considered it a tradeoff. Old life for new, in fact, he hardly missed them because he had found a new drug – respect – and he was mainlining it every day – all day long, at the office. Respect from the very people he used to hold in awe. Everywhere he went within the company he got it and made the most of it. He reveled in his new status and could not help emphasizing his contributions to the company success at the slightest opportunity.

He understood numbers and could recognize trends. He knew the investment markets, how to increase yields, avoid taxes and make his clients millions of bucks, but tonight on the eve of his promotion he was celebrating alone. Not one person offered to celebrate with him tonight.

He shrugged that thought off with another shot of Makers and laughed to himself. Just wait, Assholes. This year number one on the West coast – next year I’ll be number in the whole company! Then they will have to stand in line to invite me out. Out to dinner, to the Theatre, company paid vacations in Hawaii. Then it will be, “Hal meet the wife”. “How about a round of golf, Hal”? It will be, “Scoot over boys and make room for old Hal’. His time in the sun was coming and it couldn’t arrive too soon for Hal.

He looked again at his reflection in the mirror across the bar. Flanked by two world class babes he mused on how far he had already come. Not bad for a red headed nerd who never even had a date in high school. It was true he was no longer young. However, along with his new wealth he had acquired confidence and style. He wore contacts now instead of those old Poindexter glasses. He had his teeth bonded, his hair styled and he was sporting a close cropped beard that squared off his otherwise weak chin. His suits were tailored and he had a personal trainer to keep him in shape. The new image brought with it a new attitude. He had even studied old Carey Grant and Errol Flynn movies to mimic how they walked, sat, held a fork and lit a cigarette. Now his every move declared him a man of substance and power. This evening he was determined to have the kind of night a man of his stature deserved. Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes!

He knocked back another two fingers of bourbon and gave a final salute to the yuppie-doctor-jerkoff at the end of the bar, I win you lose, Kildare. He surveyed the room once more in the mirror. Veni, Vedi, Vici, just like Julius Caesar. Tonight he had come in and established himself as the top dog in this joint. The Alpha male. He was king of the coolest bar in town and he liked the feeling. He decided to make it a habit. He would make up for all that lost time and he would start tonight. Right here, right now. It was the beginning of a new era where he would treat himself to everything he deserved. And, he chuckled to himself, a threesome with two magazine cover beauties will be a good start.

The two of them were driving him wild. The blond kept touching his wrist, playing with his gold bracelet, tracing the links with long graceful fingers. The brunette relentlessly caressed his leg. The more they laughed and pressed themselves against him the more his libido strained at the crotch of his trousers. His intoxication was increased by the scent and touch of such beautiful women. Brushing his ear with their warm, full lips, pressing their breasts against him promising the fulfillment of his long cherished fantasies was almost more than Hal could bear. He kept looking at their breasts. He wanted to reach inside their dresses and pull them out and hold them in his hands. They knew he was looking and liked it. He could tell by the way they were all over him that they wanted it as bad as he did.

He wanted desperately to close the deal – to go somewhere with them, but he had never gotten this far before and he didn’t know what to do. The brunette suddenly suggested they go to her room for a nightcap. As she said it she slid her hand up his leg and gently pressed his crotch. Hal responded by putting his on her leg and sliding it up under dress. When she smiled Hal said, “That would be fun, I’m sure”. He tried to sound elegant, but it came out in a hoarse whisper like the pervert on Laugh-In. The three of them laughed and Hal took them by the elbow and somewhat unsteadily, led them out leaving a conspicuous pile of cash on the bar. He dropped another twenty in the band’s tip jar on the way stopping only long enough for one more triumphant look over his shoulder at

the vanquished yuppie.

Once in the car the brunette began kissing his neck and openly rubbed the lump in his pants. He drove with one hand, sliding his other under her dress again. She spread her legs and moaned in his ear. He drove crazily, weaving all over the road trying to get his hand in her panties, clumsily straining to get his fingers under that tiny strip of lace and stay on the road at the same time. From the back seat came a squeal from the blond, “Save some for me”! And they all laughed again when Hal answered “There’s plenty for everybody”!

Then they were there. It was an upscale Mediterranean style place with arched doorways, palm trees and mosaic tiles. The parking lot was full of BMWs, Lincolns and Jags. The three of them staggered into the room in a panting tangle. The brunette closed the door and immediately began loosening Hal’s tie while she pushed herself against him and undulated slowly while she smiled, “You look so uncomfortable in that suit. Take it off and let’s get comfortable”. She undid a half a dozen buttons and pulled open his shirt and kissed his chest. He ran his fingers down her back and pulled her tight. He had never been pressed up against any other woman in his whole life except his wife and she didn’t look or feel anything like this. He was so hard it hurt. He ground himself against the brunette in delirious ecstasy. They both moaned with pleasure.

Suddenly the blond thrust a drink in his face. “Makers Mark, right”? Hal took it reluctantly releasing half of the brunette’s ass. The brunette kept one hand inside Hal’s shirt and took her drink in the other. She pinched his nipple and cooed, “Why don’t you enjoy your drink and get comfortable and give us a couple of minutes to prepare”? She hooked a finger in his belt and tugged gently as she backed away. The two of them sashayed into the bathroom and closed the door.

Hal downed his drink, kicked off his shoes and fumbled with his belt buckle. He was determined to be ready when they came out. He stripped to his shorts and stopped. Should he keep them on or take them off? He looked at himself in the mirror. He quickly decided to leave them on and jump under the covers and strike a pose. He looked down and laughed. He was pitching a major tent. He patted it and promised it a night of immersion in total bliss. Hal felt good. Really good. Hell, he felt great! In fact, he had never felt this good in his entire life. Every cell in his body seemed to be singing. He snuggled down into the covers. He was so warm and cozy –drifting – and then he was asleep.

His eyes had been open for awhile staring at the white metal ceiling before he realized he was awake and began wondering where he was. He could tell he was moving. A sudden jolt sent a stabbing pain through his right side. He screamed in agony and tried to reach down, but his hands were strapped to the rails of the bed. Instantly there was a hand on his chest and a man in a white coat leaned over and said, “It’s Okay, you are going to be fine. Just take it easy. You are in an ambulance on the way to County Hospital. We’ll have you patched up in no time”. As he spoke the ambulance hit another bump and pain caused him to cry out again. He struggled to ask what happened, but his words came out in unintelligible gasps. The man in white patted his shoulder and told him not to talk. Then he gave Hal an injection and he drifted off again.

When awoke again he was in a hospital bed. The pain was still there though apparently muted by drugs. His hands were still tied to the railing. For a moment sheer terror racked his body. “Where am I”, he screamed, “What is happening”? Two men appeared at his bedside and began to untie his hands. : “It’s Okay, you’re fine. Just a second and we’ll have your hands free. Didn’t want you tearing at your stitches in your sleep”. The speaker was the older of the two. Heavyset, red faced and rumpled. The second was younger, shorthaired and buff. In jeans, tie and tweed jacket – obviously Cops.

“Don’t try to talk yet. You are still pretty drugged up”. He went on, “The maid found you this morning when she came in to clean up. The good news is the Doctor says they didn’t do too bad of a job. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of infection and you should be out of here in a couple of days. The bad news they took your left Kidney. It’s a Hell of a racket. You are the third one this summer. Same M.O. Pick you up in a bar, get you drunk, take you to a room rented with a stolen card, drug you and cut out your kidney. Fetches thirty or forty thousand on the black market. They’re not amateurs either, the Doc said it looked like they knew what they were doing. Lucky for you. We’ve seen some real hack jobs…..…”.

The old Cop droned on, but Hal was not listening anymore. He was aware only of the awful pain and a need for sleep. Just before he passed out he asked himself how this could happen to the number one man on the West coast, the Alpha male, the……..

Women In Prison

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Women in prison for homicide were almost twice as likely to have killed an intimate (husband, ex-husband, or boyfriend) as a relative like a parent or sibling (32% versus 17%). Women in prison were more likely than the men to have had at least one member of their immediate family who had been incarcerated: 47% of female inmates and 37% of male inmates.

Criminal histories

Nearly half of all women in prison were currently serving a sentence for a nonviolent offense and had been convicted in the past for only nonviolent offenses. The number of women in prison has increased 138% in the last ten years. The recent growth in the number of women in prison has been accompanied by changes in two other measures: the rate of arrest of women for selected serious crimes and the rate of incarceration of women convicted of selected serious offenses per 1,000 arrests of women for such offenses. Research on women in prison has reveled that women’s criminality must be understood in terms of the context of women’s lives (Pollock, 2002; Belknap, 2001; Chensey-Lind, 1997). The loss of self-esteem and identity of women in prison is associated closely with loss of contact with children and family. Around 55% of women in prison have a child under 16, 33% a child under 5 and 20% are lone parents.

Mental Health Issues

Nearly 1 in every 6 women had received medication prescribed by a psychiatrist or other doctor for an emotional or mental problem since admission to prison. The findings do show that women in prison need frequent visitations from family and friends to maintain positive mental health. Half are taking some form of medication for mental health problems. Women’s health care needs such as ante-natal care are often overlooked, as are their different needs in drug-addiction and mental health.

Community Help

The real tragedy here is that their mothers represented no threat to the community, as is often the case with women who enter detention or sentenced custody. Every woman who is known to be pregnant will be consistently medically assessed and monitored, just as in the community. In response, women prisoners use self-and community advocacy to meet their health care needs and cope with these challenges. Although this conclusion is consistent with the rehabilitation goals of incarceration, it also suggests that some women may have been able to avoid prison if treatment had been provided in the community, especially for substance-related problems.

Knowing and Understanding the Different Types of Depression

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Learn how to differentiate between types of depression, signs, causes and treatment. This is the first step toward understanding depression, getting the appropriate treatment and taking that step.

Alcohol Depression

As the name implies, alcohol depression is the lows that follow periods of excessive drinking. Guilt, remorse, and shame play a huge part in this type of depression, and nothing short of a long period of sobriety can begin the alleviate it. With alcohol depression, the normal hangover is much more than not feeling well.

Anxiety Depression

Anxiety depression oftentimes is indicated by profuse sweating, shaky hands and voice. Persons suffering from anxiety disorder are generally pessimistic, always expecting the worse. They also tend to go through long periods of time where they are afraid to leave their homes or participate in social activities.

Bipolar Depression

This type of depression was formerly called manic depression. Bipolar depression occurs in cycles, hence the ‘bi’ in its name. Persons who are bipolar have changing periods of great sadness and immense joy.

Clinical Depression

This is when the depression reaches the stage where the person needs some sort of treatment. Clinical depression is a diagnosis and the result of the patient taking a depression quiz administered by a professional.

Major Depression

This type of depression is the most extreme. Almost all the symptoms of depression are exhibited. Major depression can occur suddenly or over time after a series of less intense depressive episodes. This is believed to be one of the most common types of depression.

Menopause and Depression

For many women, this period of change can be very stressful. Factors such as marital problems, empty nest (children leaving home) and loss of their reproductive abilities are all linked to women and menopause.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression affects about ten percent of new mothers. Although this type of depression follows the birth of a baby it does not mean that the woman hates or does not want her child. This type of depression results from a hormonal imbalance.

Pregnancy Depression

Although pregnancy is normally a period of great joy, about ten percent (10%) of pregnant women experience prolong periods of great sadness. Although hormones are a factor in pregnancy depression it is not the lone cause.

Psychotic depression

Persons who suffer from psychotic depression report hearing voices, seeing things and people that no one else can. At this stage, the person needs immediate medical attention.

Reactive Depression

This type of depression is normally a reaction to some specific trigger. In many instances this type of depression is short-term.

Seasonal Depression

Also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), seasonal depression is most common during the winter months when the days are darker. This is believed to be linked to lessening of sunlight leading to some people becoming sad. Most sufferers of SAD see their mood lighten and they become happier as spring arrives.

Severe Depression / Chronic Depression

This type of depression is also known as dysthymia.

Chronic depressions main feature is the fact that it lasts over a long period of time, from a few months to years. Persons who suffer from severe depression can appear to function normally for a long period of time although they tend to be perpetually sad.

Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-shirt

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt is the debut solo album by John Frusciante released on March 8, 1994 on American Recordings. Frusciante released the album after encouragement from several friends, who told him that there was “no good music around anymore”.[1]

Angora”>http://www.himfr.com/buy-Angora_Socks/”>Angora SocksNiandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt combines avant-garde and stream-of-consciousness styles, with guitar, piano and various effects and synthesizers on a four-track recorder. The album’s first half, Niandra Lades, was recorded before Frusciante left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992; after the recording of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The second half, Usually Just a T-Shirt, was recorded while the band was on tour in the months leading up to Frusciante’s departure. Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt sold poorly upon its release in 1994, and was taken off the market, only to be re-released in 1999.

Frusciante joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988, at the age of 18, and released his first album with the group, Mother’s Milk the following year. The follow-up album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, was recorded in an empty mansion that the band decided to live in for the duration of recording.[2] Frusciante adapted well to the environment, and often spent his time alone painting, listening to music, and recording songs that would eventually make up the first half of the album, Niandra Lades.[2]Blood Sugar Sex Magik was released on September 24, 1991 and was an instant success. The album peaked at #3 in the U.S. and went on to sell over 12 million copies worldwide.[3][4][5] Soon after the album’s release, Frusciante developed a dislike of the band’s newfound popularity. He felt that the band was too famous, and wished they were still playing small nightclubs like they were before he joined the group.[6] By his own admission, the band’s rise to popularity took Frusciante by surprise, and he could not cope with it.[7] During Blood Sugar Sex Magik’s promotional tour, Frusciante began using heroin and cocaine heavily.[8] He and vocalist Anthony Kiedis often argued zealously before and after performances. Frusciante began purposely sabotaging shows by playing intro for a song, or playing out of key.[9] His relationship with the band had become progressively more strained, and he abruptly quit during the Japanese leg of their world tour in 1992.[10]

After leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frusciante continued to write and record solo material. He had been doing so since the age of nine, but had never considered releasing his material to the public.[11] That was until several of his friends—including Johnny Depp, Perry Farrell, Gibby Haynes and former Red Hot Chili Peppers band mate Flea—encouraged him to release the material he wrote in his spare time during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik sessions.[11][12] Frusciante began recording final cuts of the songs he had been writing since his departure, and producing them at his home in mid 1992. The production process, however, became hampered by his increasingly severe addiction to heroin. Usually Just a T-Shirt was recorded in the order it appears, with the final tracks being recorded shortly prior to Frusciante’s departure from the Chili Peppers. The effect his drug use had on album is exemplified on the album’s second song, “My Smile is a Rifle”.[1] Frusciante’s use of heroin and cocaine became more extreme during the final stages of recording in late 1993; he began viewing drugs as the only way to “make sure you stay in touch with beauty instead of letting the ugliness of the world corrupt your soul.”

During a 1994 interview, a visibly intoxicated Frusciante noted that he wrote the album in order to create “interesting music”, which he felt no longer existed. He felt contemporary artists were not writing material he deemed worth listening to and the mainstream population were settling for mediocrity.[11] Drugs were another significant topic Frusciante based Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt on.[13] He increased his drug use to cope with worsening depression that was caused by leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and his subsequent isolation. Several songs on the album deal with his dislike for the Chili Pepper’s success, such the album’s eleventh track, “Blood on My Neck From Success”.

Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt incorporated Frusciante’s avant-garde style of song composition, with his stream-of-consciousness methodology. He recorded, mixed, produced and mastered the entire record by himself, and released it on Rick Rubin’s label, American Recordings.[1] Warner Bros., the Chili Peppers’ label, originally held the rights to the album because of the leaving-artist clause in Frusciante’s Chili Peppers contract. Because he was living as a recluse, however, the label gladly handed the rights over to Rubin, who released the album under his label.

Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt was initially previewed by Billboard magazine, who said that “Chili Peppers fans might be daunted by the album’s elusive experimentalism.” A representative of American Recordings did not foresee the album as being viable in any mainstream music stores, and some retailers went as far as to ban it from being sold. After the album was released, Frusciante played three small performances, and participated in a few magazine interviews to promote the album; explaining in one interview that people would only be able to understand his work if “their heads are capable of tripping out”. At one point shortly after release, Frusciante began searching for a string quartet to play the album with him on tour. The idea was eventually discarded when he could not find a band that “understands why Ringo Starr is such a great drummer, can play Stravinsky, and also smokes pot.” The concept of a tour was ultimately abandoned as well, due to Frusciante’s diminishing health.

Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt was not widely reviewed, but yielded a generally positive response from critics. Steve Huey of Allmusic, who rated the album four out of five stars, said that “[the album was] an intriguing and unexpected departure from Frusciante’s work with the Chili Peppers”, and that “the sparse arrangements of the first half help set the stage for the gossamer guitar work later on.”He went on to say that Usually Just a T-Shirt—the latter half of the album—contained “pleasant psychedelic instrumentals with plenty of backward-guitar effects.” Ned Raggett, also of Allmusic, noted that “there’s nothing quite so stunning as [Frusciante's] magnificent remake of Bad Brains’ ‘The Big Takeover’.” Adam Williams of PopMatters said the album “fall[s] somewhere between madness and brilliance”. He went on to compare Frusciante to Syd Barrett, and felt it was a “hint at a deeply cerebral artist looking within for inspiration and creativity.” The album received its share of negative criticism as well. Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard, felt “Frusciante’s eccentricities run seriously amok”, and that ” [the album] sounds like a string of four-track demos. The first part of the album is slightly more tuneful than the more ambient, experimental second section[...] Mostly what you get are Frusciante’s acoustic-guitar scratchings and stream-of-conscious ramblings.”[16] The first Rolling Stone review of the record, however, was positive: “All in all, [the album is] a mess – but definitely a fascinating, often lovely mess. As one might expect of an album titled Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-shirt this is twisted, cool stuff.”[22] The Boston Herald said that while the album was “a stark display of Frusciante’s acoustic guitar virtuosity” and “…eerily beautiful”, the singing was “terrible; his high notes will drive the neighborhood dogs into a frenzy.”

Frusciante’s drug addiction worsened as the years progressed. An article published by the New Times LA described him as “a skeleton covered in thin skin”.[18] He participated in an interview with Dutch public broadcast station VPRO—the first media appearance he made since leaving the Chili Peppers.[11] In the interview Frusciante speaks of the positive effects drugs have had on his mind and proudly admits to being a “junkie”. He went on to confess addictions to heroin and crack cocaine, but ultimately described himself as being in the best health of his life.[11] In 1997, Frusciante released his second solo album Smile From the Streets You Hold, primarily for drug money.Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt was estimated to have sold only 45,000 copies when Frusciante ordered it out of print in 1998—when Frusciante rehabilitated and rejoined the Chili Peppers.[1]Smile From the Streets You Hold was withdrawn from the market a year later.[24][25] In 1999 Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt was re-released on American Recordings.[1] Frusciante has said he plans to re-release Smile From the Streets You Hold sometime in the future, but has not given any indication as to when.

The Alternative Way to Cure Acne

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Do Alternative Remedies for Acne Work? Type of treatment that some people find effective, so it’s worth knowing about. The treatments I’m talking about are called alternative acne treatments.

There are a variety of ways to get rid of acne that are homeopathic or natural and do not require a prescription from a dermatologist. These remedies can be used in conjunction with prescribed methods. For those who are seeking healthy and natural methods for getting rid of acne, homeopathic remedies are a viable option.

There are many treatment methods available to treat this condition, ranging from traditional medicines to acne alternative treatments that have been formulated from natural sources.

The basics for acne alternative treatments and prevention advice are:

1.Herbal Acne Remedies

Alternative medicine has come up with many solutions for acne and most of these are herbal solutions.

It’s common knowledge that the liver is the primary internal organ that clears up any troubles we may have with our hormones. If our hormones get out of equilibrium the end result is a bad case of acne.

Why Some Herbal Acne Treatments Actually Work For Acne?

The herbal blend strengthened and improved liver function; there by purifying the blood and helping to balance hormones.

It is your liver that deactivates and clears excess and used hormones from body system. And it’s also your liver’s that purifies your blood of the congesting toxins that aggravate acne so very much.

Even though they can be effective, one of the problems with herbal remedies is that they are very slow acting. While the results may be worth waiting for, it may take an entire month of consistent use before results are visible. Meanwhile, herbal acne treatments proved to be very powerful for acne sufferers, but for the short-term.

Remember that some herbal remedies have never been studied, and tested for safety and effectiveness as acne alternative treatments.

How Herbs Work in Body System?

All herbs work one of two ways or a combination of these two ways

The herb carries with it vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and a less understood “life force”. These aspects support the body nutritionally. Generally, these kinds of herbs are safe to be taken long-term. But should only be taken seasonally.

The herb has chemical components that actually throws the body out of balance. Depending on these chemical components different body systems are thrown out of balance. These herbs work short-term, and are damaging to the body system if taken in long-term. Please understand herbal acne treatments that temporarily throw your body out of balance are not a bad thing. That’s why they work. But they should never be taken long-term and will actually stop working very quickly if you do.

2. Homeopathic Remedies

The objects of homeopathic remedies for acne is to improve the skins resistance to infection. Most issues can be solved through a healthy diet and good hygiene.

Homeopathy refers to a system for treating disease based on the administration of minute doses of a drug. In massive doses, the drug is expected to produce symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the disease itself. Homeopathic professionals evaluate the individual (their physical, emotional and intellectual makeup) before prescribing a treatment. While homeopathy has not had the benefit of many scientific studies, professional homeopaths have found that certain homeopathic treatments reduce certain symptoms of acne.

Homeopathic remedies for acne can include medicine or nutrients that regulate hormone levels, as changing hormone levels are by far the leading cause of acne. Men and women experience the same results from changing hormonal levels even thought the amounts of each hormone are dramatically different. Homeopathic acne treatment is most often needed in the teenage years. Older people can also develop pimples, but are advised to immediately see a physician if a severe outbreak occurs.

3.Diet Remedies

There is saying “you are what you eat”

One of the simplest alternative acne treatments is to simply change your diet. Some people have had great success in reducing their acne by eating more fruit and vegetables, and less processed foods. This keeps you much healthier, and will improve your skin.

Food and nutrition is the most important factor in alternative therapy. Fat and chocolates were blamed as the basic reason for the outbreak of acne while fast foods high in grease content as well as chips, chocolate and soft drinks can cause higher episodes of acne even in an adult. Vitamins such as A, E, B, and C are also important for the skin texture and tone, also seem to be important and juice therapists advice to have fresh juice, to a reduce acne problems.

What you eat can affect your acne breakouts. It’s no doubt that good nutrition is an important factor in getting rid of your acne once and for all. Yet many people who suffer from acne don’t actually know how they can improve their diet, which will in turn improve their skin. They don’t know which types of food helps, or doesn’t help.

So eating healthier foods will help keep your skin cleaner. But that isn’t to say you can’t ever eat the fatty foods, or the carbohydrates like rice and pasta. Although these things can take longer for your body to process, which means there are more toxins in your body system, it’s fine in moderation. A few other foods to avoid are foods that contain a lot of sugar or a lot of yeast. Again, these are fine in moderation, but if you eat these foods too often, it can make your nutrition unbalanced

Another help to diets, is the addition of adequate amounts of water consumption to anyone’s diet. Why? Because water helps to flush out the poison Substances in your body system which would otherwise seek an outlet through your skin.

By drinking more water, you can keep your body clear of toxin build-up. And this will help keep your skin healthier. Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day can be one of the acne natural treatments that can begin to detoxify the pores and skin.

Anyone looking for treatment can look online to find more suggestions and can read testimonials from those who have had success with home remedies. No one acne home treatment will work for everyone, so finding the right combination of ingredients or procedures could take time. Getting a program that fits the person’s routine and helps prevent further problems may take time and experimentation, but the results will be worth the time invested.

Keep in mind that those acne solutions that work for one person will probably not work for the next person. What worked for your mother, brother, or best friend may or may not work for you.

How to Overcome Lindsay Lohan’s Addictions!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

According to the National Enquirer Lindsay Lohan is “out of control” when it comes to drugs and alcohol. The National Enquirer is now claiming that a friend of Lindsay’s told the publication that despite having a month in rehab earlier in the year, the actress went wild at the recent Coachella music festival: “Lindsay’s drugging and drinking is out of control! She learned nothing in rehab.”

In an article published by Vanity Fair Magazine Lindsay Lohan had finally come clean on rumors about her incredibly shrinking body, by admitting that her low body weight was due to bulimia.

It would seem from the above-mentioned publications that Ms. Lohan is not only suffering from a drug addiction, but also an eating disorder! One would have to wonder what causes someone that has captured fame and fortune to suddenly fall prey to the trap of addiction?

Well, lets take a moment to examine Lindsay’s upbringing!

Lindsay’s former bodyguard Tony Almeida was quoted in the latest issue of In Touch as stating; If Lindsay Lohan’s life is a train wreck, she’s got no one to blame but her parents. “Lindsay was a very sweet and talented kid, but she didn’t stand a chance against her parents and the Hollywood system,” he told the magazine.

Sex, drugs and suicide attempts — according to Tony, Lindsay tried it all while underage and under the neglectful watch of her legal guardians, Mom and Dad, the story reports. Even when her soon-to-be absentee daddy, Michael, did pay attention to Lindsay’s bad behavior, the punishment was worse than the crime.

Annoyed with Lindsay’s late-night whining, the magazine reports that “Michael slammed on the brakes and dragged her out of the car, pushed her up on the hood, screamed at her and called her a ****,” Tony recalls. “I got in the middle of it and pulled him off.”

Like the stand-up dad he is, Michael claims ignorance of the incident. Still, Pops Lohan told In Touch, “If I did do it, if that’s the worst anyone can say about me, then it’s not too bad.” Now that’s fatherly advice you can take to rehab.

Meanwhile, mom Dina often “let her do whatever she wanted, just to keep her happy and working . . . [At her 16th birthday party] Lindsay drank whatever she wanted – I saw her drinking beer and mixed drinks with my own eyes [without Dina's intervention].” As Lindsay’s manager, Dina – who was desperate to become a star herself – received 10 percent of her income. “Lindsay was the family cash cow – and she resented it,” Almeida claims. “They counted on her to pay their bills . . . I saw Lindsay exhausted, begging her mother for some time off.” Young Lindsay’s parents looked the other way as she began a life of boozing, boys and drugs. When she was 15, they allowed her to share a room with her then-14-year-old boyfriend, Aaron Carter, at Loews in Miami Beach. Almeida relates, “They knew Lindsay was sleeping in Aaron’s room. But they seemed happy she had chosen somebody who could benefit her singing career.”

It is quite apparent that a whole host of dysfunctional patterns took place in the Lohan household. Both parents were obviously uninvolved in Lindsay’s life, and at times were verbally abusive, and inadequetly parented their children.

I am not at all surprised that Lindsay has fallen prey to not one but two addictions since the emotional pain caused by family dysfunction is at the root of all addictive behavior.

Are you suffering from addiction?

When you were a child, did your parents verbally abuse you? Were you physically or sexually abused? Did one or both of your parents suffer from alcoholism or drug abuse? Did your parents control or manipulate you? Did your parents show up part-time for a job that required full time parenting? Like most, you may not realize how much these family dysfunctions have destroyed your self-esteem or why they are the root cause of your addiction! You see, there are many types of addictions, and they all have the same common denominator’ family dysfunction!

As a life coach, I have helped addicted clients learn the secrets to overcoming addiction, and I have established a unique five-step process as a potential benchmark for recovery. My success has overwhelmingly convinced me that the mainstream approach to addiction is fundamentally amiss because formal treatment programs attempt to defeat the symptoms rather than address the core issue.

Addictive behavior is a symptom of the emotional trauma caused by family dysfunction. Therefore, when you fix the root of the problem habitual behavior becomes repulsive. Instead, the mainstream philosophy has followed a pattern of bombarding the public with multiple theories and confusing psychobabble, neither of which address liberation from family dysfunction nor restoring self-esteem. These treatments not only fail to preserve anonymity, but they also fail in excess of ninety percent of the time!

The following is a brief outline of the 5 steps to addiction freedom. Prior to following these steps or any addiction recovery program, take the necessary time to ascertain whether you require the additional support of an addiction counselor or medical attention regarding withdrawal.

1. Step One: Unearth the Square Root

Family dysfunction is the common denominator, or square root of all addictive behavior, and until it is brought to the forefront and confronted nothing will change! This is by far the most important and critical step of the entire process. There are two parts to step one, and they are as follows:

A. Uncovering your family dysfunction

Physical abuse

Sexual abuse

Verbal abuse

Alcoholic parent

Controlling parent

Inadequate parenting

B. Confront the parent or parents responsible for the dysfunction

The thought of confronting the person that is responsible for your emotional trauma is one the most frightening situations you will face. However, it is also the most liberating and empowering thing you’ll ever do! Why do you need to confront your parent or parents? Well, first let me clarify the meaning of the word confront and in what context we are using this term. Confronting the person does not at all mean that you should verbally attack them for your misfortunes. On the contrary, you are not doing this for them. You are doing it for you! The confrontation is not meant to be an attack, but it is rather a chance for you to set the record straight and drop the emotional baggage that you’ve been toting around.

2. Step Two: Remove your Emotional Baggage

You have completed step one and have confronted your parent or parents. This in and of itself will have removed much of the pain and emotional trauma. However, to fully free yourself from their emotional stronghold, it will be necessary to find forgiveness in your heart for a family member that has committed an atrocity against you. Forgive! How can I forgive someone that committed these atrocities against me? Many people have a misconception about forgiveness. Forgiveness is not reconciliation! There is a drastic difference between the two. Reconciliation would mean that you have accepted and submit to their behavior and have agreed to try and continue the relationship under those circumstances. Forgiveness means that you merely give up or cease the resentment of the offender.

Step Three: Cure Wounditis

Without question, partaking in habitual behavior not only causes you pain but, it inflicts pain on the people around you as well. However, do not allow what you have done in the past or what others have done to you, to cause you to live in fear of what the future holds. The past is the past, it is over, and living in it does not serve anyone well. Live in the present moment, be kind to yourself, and learn to love yourself. How can you love someone else if you don’t love yourself? The answer is you can’t!!! It isn’t a big secret that you’re feeling shame and guilt for what you’ve done. In fact, you’re probably questioning right now as to whether you should be punished for your past actions. Well guess what, its ok! God doesn’t punish people, we punish ourselves. God is a loving and forgiving being. So if you thought that you would continue to punish yourself with shame and guilt before God gets a hold of you, you can stop right now! We do not have defects of character, are not full of shortcomings, and we certainly are not powerless! On the Contrary, we are all the same, we are all connected, and we all have the same power to change!
Step Four: Awaken the Power within

Whether you want to admit it or not, all of the pain you have been through concerning your habitual behavior is a spiritual lesson. And until you view it as such, it will continue to cause you suffering and unhappiness. Every dark cloud does have a silver lining, and if you look hard enough you’ll find one in this habitual situation too. However, to find that silver lining you must ask the right questions;

1. What can I learn from my addiction?

2. How can I grow from it?

The answers to these questions can be found in a place that is uncharted by most, and it is just waiting to be explored! It’s called your true self! To embark on a journey of Self -reflection requires the practice of Mediation.

For more information on mediation you can visit my website below.

Step five: Practice Acts of Random Kindness

Happiness is a state of mind. Individuals that are suffering from addictive behavior are not happy! Ironically, in an attempt to find happiness, they chose a vehicle to mask their emotional pain through the use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and various other compulsions. However, happiness is never found on the outside in material possessions or in the abuse of substances and compulsions! True life happiness can only be found in one place, and that place is within! Happiness is not found in the practice of outward ideals or in other people. To the contrary, it is actually the small acts of random kindness that opens the heart and fuels the principle of unconditional love!

To practice spirituality is to be of service to your fellow man and make no mistake about it that is why we are all here. Begin with small acts of kindness such as opening a door for someone, letting someone go before you in the checkout line or just taking the time to offer a kind word to an older person or a child. You get the picture! The first thing I do upon waking in the morning is think of how I can be of service and throughout the day I am always mindful of opportunities that present themselves for me to do just that. You know, the paradox of the whole thing is that the more kind and generous you are the more love, kindness and abundance you’ll receive back. Don’t believe me! Just try it and watch what begins to happen to you.

Finally, good luck in your quest for addiction freedom. Visit my website below to subscribe to my Free E-guide and Weekly E-Zine;

3- weight loss

Notes from readings

- pancreas either produces insufficient amounts of insulin or body cells become resistant to the hormone’s effects.

- Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

- Although dietary measures are also important, it must be treated with insulin injections. About 60,000 people in the UK have this type of diabetes.

- The pancreas continues to secrete insulin but cells in the body become resistant to its effects.

- Diabetes mainly affects people over the age of 40 and is more common in overweight people.

- Condition may be treated with dietary measures only.

- Diabetes mellitus can sometimes develop during pregnancy. This is called gestational diabetes and is usually treated with insulin to maintain the health of the mother and baby.

- Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by an abnormal reaction in which the immune system destroys insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas.

- Type 2 diabetes are less well understood, but the genetics and obesity are important factors.

- The symptoms of type 2 may not be obvious or may go unnoticed until a routine medical check-up. The main symptoms of both forms may include:

- Excessive urination

- Thirst and a dry mouth

- Insufficient sleep because of the need to urinate at night.

- Lack of energy

- Blurry vision

- Weight loss

Symptoms of type 2 may go unnoticed until routine medical check up.

The main symptoms of both forms may include:

- excessive urination

- thirst and a dry mouth

- insufficient sleep because of the need to urinate at night.

- Lack of energy

- Blurry vision

- Weight loss

The main symptoms of ketoacidosis include:

- nausea and vomiting, sometimes with abdominal pain.

- Deep breathing.

- Acetone smell to the breath (like pear drops or nail polish remover)

- Confusion.

Living with diabetes:

- A healthy diet

- Drinking and smoking

- Special care for your feet.

- Exercise and sports.

- Strenuous exercise

- Moderate exercise

- Medical check up

- Eye examination

- Blood pressure measurement.

Treatment for:

Type 1

Insulin can be injected into any fatty area, such as upper arm.

- Diabetes is a growing healthcare challenge worldwide.

-A considerable proportion

of people either have impaired glucose tolerance with a significant

risk of development of diabetes, or have undiagnosed Type 2

diabetes.

-Pivotal to reducing the risk of morbidity and the development

of complications and mortality is the normalisation of both fasting

and postprandial blood glucose levels.

-diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions

worldwide, with between 5 and 10% of the world population

affected.

- People with diabetes have approximately twice

the prevalence of hypertension compared with non-diabetic

patients

-40% of subjects were defined as hypertensive on entry

(receiving antihypertensive treatment or with a mean systolic

blood pressure ? 160 mmHg and/or a mean diastolic blood

pressure ? 90 mmHg)

-People with diabetes are 17 times more prone to kidney disease,

with diabetic nephropathy being the most common

complication [11]. Diabetic nephropathy may eventually

lead to end-stage renal disease and thus significant mortality.

-Approximately 30-40% of people with diabetes develop

retinopathy, and diabetes is the most common cause of blindness

in the working years of life in developed countries

-According to a 1997 estimate [12], 120 million people

have Type 2 diabetes (approximately 2% of the world population)

and an additional 4 million have Type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for more than 85% of all cases of

diabetes in developed countries and almost all cases in developing

countries. It appears to be epidemic (affecting a high

and increasing proportion of the population) in many parts

of the world, and represents a serious and growing global

health challenge primarily as a result of increased obesity,

ageing populations, increasing urbanisation and a more sedentary

lifestyle [34, 35]. However, data from many parts of

the world with high and increasing prevalence (Asia, Latin

America, China) are not broadly based, and so this estimate

is likely to be markedly low.

-Type 1 diabetes

is one of the most common childhood diseases in developed

European countries and the incidence has increased dramatically

in some newly prosperous countries

-The incidence of Type 2 diabetes in particular is expected

to increase considerably as developing countries become

more Westernised in terms of availability of healthcare and

modernisation of existing resources, as well as a result of

substantial improvements in diabetes surveillance and

screening. Growth is projected to be greatest in Asia and

Africa, where diabetes could become 2-3 times more common

than it is today [12]. By 2025, more than 75% of people

with diabetes will be from developing countries, compared

with 62% in 1995

-Type 2 diabetes suggests a need for continuing

attention to control of blood glucose, blood pressure

and blood lipids through medication, diet and exercise.

People with Type 1 diabetes, and increasingly those with

Type 2 diabetes, have the additional burden of subcutaneous

insulin injections, self-monitoring and care of their insulin

supplies and equipment.

Direct Quote

Dr Miriam’s definition of diabetes is:

“the inability of the body to use glucose for energy due to inadequate amounts of or loss of sensitivity to, the hormone insulin.”

Dr Miriam Stoppard. 2002, Family Health Guide, Dorling Kindersley Ltd, England, Page 504

Paraphrase

The body uses glucose as energy in order to perform work and if it fails because of insufficient amount of insulin (which is essential for the absorption of glucose) or because the body cells become more resistant to the hormone’s effect then we end up with the non-healthy state called diabetes.

Summary

Dr Stoppard states that “Glucose from the blood stream is the main source of energy for the body’s cells. Its absorption is enabled by the pancreas, which produces insulin. Among people suffering from diabetes mellitus, a build up of toxic by- products, like acetone with a pear drop smell, in the body occurs. This is caused by the use of other sources of energy than glucose. Hence the unused glucose accumulates in the blood and urine, causing high blood sugar levels. 1 in 10 diabetes depends on self administered injections of insulin and the rest take oral drug and are careful about their diet. These treatments are vital in preventing the symptoms of high blood sugar level like frequent passing of urine, thirst and loss of weight as well as complications leading to peripheral nerve disorders which may affect the eyes, kidneys, the cardiovascular system. The weakening of the immune system may also cause infections like cystitis.”

Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is developing in epidemic proportions in today’s world with 5 to 10% of the worldwide population affected. This disease is defined by Dr Stoppard, “as the inability of the body to use glucose for energy due to inadequate amounts of or loss of sensitivity to, the hormone insulin”. Which means that the body uses glucose in order to perform work and if it fails because of insufficient amount of insulin or because the body cells become more resistant to the hormone’s effect then we end up with the non-healthy state called diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes:

1- Type 1 which is caused by the abnormal reaction in which the immune system destroys insulin secreting cells in the pancreas. It is more common in childhood.

2- Type 2 which causes are less understood. However, genetics and overweight are important factors.

Causes

Diabetes of Type 1 is usually caused by some viral diseases which affect the immune system of the child, though the genetic factor of one parent suffering from type 1 diabetes may have some effect, however most children who develop type 1 diabetes do not have parents with diabetes. As for Type 2 diabetes it is the increase in food intake which leads to overweight and obesity as well as the living of a sedentary lifestyle and it mostly affects adults.

Symptoms

Both types of diabetes have the same symptoms where there is excessive urination which account for the thirst and dry mouth but also for the insufficient sleep at night because of the need to go to the toilet. This state is paralleled by the lack of energy; blur vision and quick weight loss, abdominal pain, deep breathing and acetone smell breath may also consist of symptoms of diabetes.

Treatment

While the Type 1 diabetes have to submit themselves to the burden of insulin injection, self monitoring and the care of their insulin supplies and equipments, though the Type 2 diabetes have the need to control their blood glucose, their blood pressure and their blood lipids these may be done through medication, diet and exercise but sometimes in addition the Type 2 diabetes have to make insulin injections as the Type 1’s diabetes with all the inconvenience attached to it. As for treatment by insulin Dr Stoppard states that “Glucose from the blood stream is the main source of energy for the body’s cells. Its absorption is enabled by the pancreas, which produces insulin. Among people suffering from diabetes mellitus, a build up of toxic by-products, like acetone with a pear drop smell, in the body occurs.

Hence, no complete cure of diabetes exist, for it is a chronic disease but it can be controlled so as not to cause more severe damage to the body which is affected by it. For that a healthy diet with special attention to avoid excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages and smoking. Special care should also be taken with the feet and the eyes. Medical check up as well as blood pressure measurement should be regular. While sports should be practiced excessive strenuous exercise should be avoided.

Short Term and Long Term effect

If left unattended the diabetes mellitus may give rise to both short-term and long term complications. In case of Type 1 neglect of treatment may lead to nausea and vomiting accompanied by abdominal pain and deep breathing, while an acetone smell breath is noted. If left untreated the subject quickly enter in a confusion state where dehydration may lead to coma and death. As for the Type 2 diabetes if left untreated as is often the cause long term diseases like cardiovascular diseases occurs which may end up in a stroke. These are consequences of high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol in the blood. There is an increase risk of cataracts in the eyes and symptoms of dizziness upon standing and poor circulation because of nerve damage may lead to ulcers and gangrene.

Conclusion

In conclusion it can be said that the Diabetes mellitus is a disease that compel the one suffering from it to adopt a healthier lifestyle so as to control the devastation that the disease may cause to the body and to avoid the shortening of one’s life.

Learn About the Traditional Birth Ceremonies Among the Acholi People of Uganda

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Although many people come to town from villages, they know little about their cultural beliefs. As I’m one among those who lives in towns, I always find it difficult when I go back to the village for different occasions like traditional parties, burial and many things.Uganda is a country of many different tribes and every tribe has its cultural beliefs. When I visited the Acholi people in Uganda with my friend, I had to ask them some of their tradition briefs and really I was impressed by what I found.Among those that touched me were the traditional birth ceremonies among the Acholi people and on this article I’m privileged to give you want I got from there.

Although much of Ugandan Traditional beliefs have changed with time, it will be good for the world to know their cultural back ground and may be tell their children what was happening in those days. The Acholi people recognized two distinct birth customs namely the normal birth and the Jok Anywala (godly) birth.

Normal Birth.

Men were advised not to be away from home. There were no special arrangements for birth and there was no fixed place of delivery. When signs of labour were detected, a lacol (midwife) was sent for. The Lacol was in most cases an old experienced woman. If a lacol was not available, two of the women present were called upon to assist. If the expectant woman happened to be inside a hut, she could hold the center pole of the house for support.A woman would support her from behind. The Lacol knelt in front of the woman and, if it was a straight forward birth, she would receive the baby in her outstretched arms.

The baby was then washed with cold water. The Lacol would then cut the umbilical cord with any available instrument. Knives, spears, arrowheads, bamboo, slices of reed cane or sharpened stones could be used. The remaining part of the cord was tied with fiber. The placenta would be buried outside the home under the woman’s granary, in the bush or by the river.Care was taken that the placenta was buried out of reach of those who might use it to charm the child.Among Many Acholi people clans, the Lacol was not supposed to touch the ground with her hands when they still contained blood from the placenta because it was feared in such an event that the mother would become barren. After washing her hands, the Lacol would put the mother and the child in the house. If the mother was giving birth for the first time, the house would have been specially constructed for her.Payment for the services of the Lacol varied considerably. Sometimes she rendered free services but some times she was given a sheep.

After the whole process, the Lacol was given awar me lakwnyi wino (food or beer) the food would be partly cooked to symbolize the child’s birth. If the woman had problems during labour, the medicine man was invited. He would administer the medicine and then rub the belly and back of the woman. A baby who would be forced out that way would be named oyat (boy) or Layat (girl). If the oyat failed, the jwara (diviner) would be consulted.

She would give treatment involving the insertion of a bamboo stick into the woman. She would then hold a chicken by the legs and flutter it around the expectant mother’s head while uttering a prayer. As a result of such a straggle, the jwara would direct the umbilical cord to be buried in a special place to appease jok. Then a child would be given a special name on account of the place where the cord was buried. For instance Odwong (boy), Ladwong (girl) meant that the cord was buried under the Odwong tree.Odur (boy), Ladur (girl) meant that meant that the cord was buried in the rubbish heap.

The mother and the child would remain in the house for three days if the child was a boy and for four days if the child was a girl. During this period, the mother’s food was cooked and given to her by a young female relative. The food was salt less because it was believed that if the mother touched salt, the child would go blind. No one was allowed to enter the mothers’ house during that period except the cook.

If the child’s genitals were touched, it was believed he would grow up to be infertile. Therefore the mother could only speak to her husband.Besides, she was not supposed to look at the sky otherwise the child would become impotent.Alcoholic drinks were not allowed in the house. Reasons for this practice varied. Some believed that the child would grow up to be a drunkard; others believed that the child would die.The birth ceremonies varied from clan to clan and others from village to village.
