Book Review: Recovering Charles by Jason F. Wright

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Take my advice, you don’t need to read this review, you just need to read the book! Just go to Amazon and buy it!

Oh, you are still reading, I guess I will have to explain why this is the book of the year in my mind.

Jason Wright is no newcomer to the literary world and his two prior books, Christmas Jars and The Wednesday Letters, both achieved critical acclaim and also a New York Times bestseller. With these credentials you would expect Recovering Charles to be well laid out plot wise and eloquent in the use of language. It most certainly is!

Some might argue that Recovering Charles is a little slow getting out of the starting blocks, however, in retrospect the first part of the book is fundamental to understanding the entire story, Jason Wright took the correct approach.

The plot itself is deceptively simple, Luke is a young successful freelance photographer on New York, he has it all, career, some money, pretty girlfriend, he is in someways the epitome of today’s American Dream. There are skeletons in his closet, a mother who died from addiction to prescription drugs, and an estranged father who fell victim to the demon bottle following his wife’s death.

Luke has not spoken to his father Charles in over two years, in fact he doesn’t even know where he is. Two days after Hurricane Katrina hits Luke receives a phone call from a stranger claiming to be Charles’ friend, and informs him that his father had been living in New Orleans and is missing.

Luke must decide if he is willing to let his father back into his life. Should he go to New Orleans and help the search, or try to ignore the plea for help? He makes the decision to go.

I feel a very personal attachment to this book. My wife is from Slidell, which was devastated by Katrina. She did not sleep for days, frantic trying to get information about her family, all of which were in the New Orleans area. The phones were not working, the images on the TV were horrific, this was not America, it could not be happening here. These disasters happen in other countries, not at home. We spent countless hours in the internet, bits of that infrastructure were still working. We scoured NOAA reconnaissance photography, satellite pictures, we searched the lists of evacuees, we left messages on bulletin boards, and we kept dialing phone numbers.

Jason Wright has encapsulated all of the emotions that we felt during that time. His descriptive writing is unparalleled, he picks up on small things, a child’s broken toy, a picture frame showing a happy mother and her newborn baby. These are powerful images.

Luke’s journey is one that occurs on two levels, on the outside it is one of search and rescue, on the inside it is one of self discovery and reconciliation with his past.

There is also a very unique twist at the end of the book, actually two twists, these are unexpected and a masterful use of the plot.

Recovering Charles is an evocative and emotional read, and even though a work of fiction, I can guarantee that you will have a lump in your throat when you finish reading it. This book deserves to be on the New York Times best seller list, it certainly is one that I will remember for a very long time. As a reviewer I rarely have the luxury of time to read a book twice, I will make time for Recovering Charles.

You can pick up your copy of Recovering Charles at better book stores everywhere, on online from Amazon.

can start getting involved in studies on a scale hard to imagine before. I spoke with someone at Xerox Park yesterday who had done some early work at expert systems taking data and mining it and came up with publishable medical results showing drug side effects. And he said, “Wow! This would be incredible, you know? It was so expensive and hard for us to even study a few thousand people. With this, if people felt safe with the steps to anonymize, we could do studies much faster, much larger …

Good question. Everyone asks this question here. He had asked here about the prohibition against alcohol vs. the drug wars. And I do actually cut that at all in the book itself, but it’s a very timely question. I think it’s fascinating to point out the parallel or nonparallel between Prohibition and the drug wars of today. Even during Prohibition, and by the way I think largely Prohibition and the drug wars are largely about enforcement, right? It’s about trying to keep people from getting …

Aids – What Is It?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Aids stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It means that it is infectious and can cause a weakened immune system and cause a group of health trouble. Aids is the final process in an infection called HIV. There is no cure for Aids at this time. It can be spread from person to person through the exchange of bodily fluid. There are ways to prevent it from spreading and things to know to keep you safe.

HIV is passed on to someone by an infected person. It can be contacted through sex, sharing needles with an infected person, being born to an infected mother or drinking breast milk from an infected person. And in very rare circumstances can HIV be transmitted through oral sex and kissing when there are deep cuts in the mouth. In the past HIV was transmitted through blood transfusions but now tests screen for it before the blood is given out to someone who needs it.

HIV can show no symptoms and not be able to be found in blood for months after being infected. That is why when a person comes to get tested for HIV they are told to come back in six months for another test just to be sure. Symptoms may first appear like a cold with things like fever, headaches, body aches, swollen glands sore tummy and joints that may last for a few weeks. This usually passes and the person goes on with their life and they may not know that this was actually the onset of HIV setting in.

A person can have HIV for up to ten years and not show any signs of it. However, the disease is still at work as it deteriorates the body over time creating a weak immune system. When HIV is first transmitted to a person, their body will make anti-bodies to fight it off. When a blood test is taken it is the anti-bodies that are shown and that tell the lab technician that HIV is present.

HIV works by destroying CD4 cells that help your immune system work. A healthy person has anywhere from 500 to 1500 of these CD4 cells. Aids is present when these cells go down to under 200 of the CD4 cells. A person can receive treatment that can slow down the process of HIV, the Antiretroviral medicine works by trying to keep some of these cells alive as long as possible.

In the 1990′s Aids was the leading cause of death. Currently there is 1 to 1.2 million people infected with the virus in the USA alone. And studies show that a quarter of these people do not even know that they have it. Statistics have also revealed that 75% of people infected are men while the remaining 25% are women.

To prevent HIV and Aids it is advisable to not share needles with anyone for any reason. Keeping yourself safe might mean that you have to keep needles stocked up and to always have them with you if you feel you might be using them during the day. Another way to prevent HIV is to have you and your partner tested before becoming active. It is also healthier to have few sexual partners and use protection when you are engaging in sex or oral sex. Even one time of unprotected sex or shared needles can result in a lifetime of HIV.

HIV will eventually lead to Aids of which there is no cure for. Medicine can help to slow the process but the time span of a person infected with HIV is unknown most peak around ten years where AIDs sets in and the immune system begins to shut down. Which makes common illnesses deadly for someone with the disease.

Different Types of Health Resources

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Behavioral health resources are institutions set up to reform people. They could be alcoholic’s anonymous, mental institutions, rehabilitation centers, orphanages, counseling centers, etc. The aim of behavioral resources is to improve a person’s life by sharing his or her problem and finding a solution to overcome the problem. It involves sessions to induce positive thoughts in the person, quality services for mentally afflicted patients, thus leading them to lead healthy and happy lives. Helping people with compassion and going to the core of the problem is a part of any behavioral resource centre.

Mental health resources could be mental health institutions, mental health counselors, rehabilitation centers, etc. At such places, mentally retarded patients or mentally affected people get the required assistance. Some mental diseases are curable and with regular therapy and medication, the patient can be brought to his or her normal state of mind. Mental diseases like attention deficiency disorder, various phobias, depressive disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, etc. can be treated at such institutions. These diseases are curable because they are a state of mind and no damage has been done to the brain. However, mental diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia, schizophrenia, etc. can be difficult and sometimes impossible to revert back as they are caused due to damage done to the brain.

Community health resources are organizations that encourage the people of a particular area or community to join as a member of the community health resource centre and aid in providing medical care to others from the same area. These community health centers also aim at providing unpaid healthcare to people who cannot afford expensive health care. Such centers are basically non profit organizations that aim at the welfare of the people. They provide for all kinds of healthcare such as pediatric, family healthcare, cosmetic care, all kinds of surgeries, cardio care, cancer care, ENT care, Ophthalmology, mental care, etc. They also educate other people on health, spread awareness, campaign for important health issues, etc.

Kid’s health resources are websites or institutions, which inform how to protect your children from newer diseases, about the nutrition of children, counseling, new researches and studies, preventive medicines, etc. These websites offer help with pediatric care too. Therefore, those mothers of newborn babies don’t have to go too far looking for help.

Women’s health resources are organizations, which offer diagnosis, treatment and healthcare tips to women. These organizations also provide help with domestic violence, coping with pregnancy, diet, etc. There are different health resources for men and women because each suffers a completely different set of problems. Conditions like menopause, breast cancer, and pregnancy are only seen in women and are difficult to deal with. While heart diseases, obesity, etc. are common in both. Also, in most parts of the world women form the neglected part of the society. So we need to pay more attention to them.

Men’s health resources are also organizations, which offer diagnosis, treatment and healthcare tips to men. Men deal with different problems like prostate cancer, impotency, etc. These healthcare centers give pointers about which health issues are more important and need to be focused on. They give information about regular check ups to be done if men are suffering from some serious illness. Men are generally not open when it comes to talking about their problems, because men are supposed to be tough. With the help of such organizations, they might be able to discuss their problems more freely and try to battle them.

Fear: Why Most Smokers Are Afraid To Be An Ex Smoker

Monday, January 18th, 2010

As human beings we experience many different kinds of emotions. Every day, we can and do experience emotions like happiness, pride, disappointment, disgust, anticipation etc. etc. The few that I have mentioned are in technical terms called “secondary emotions” (there are many others but I don’t want to go into them all as they are not relevant to the point here and they stem from primary emotions.) The primary emotions are as follows: Love, Joy, Anger, Surprise, Sadness, and FEAR.

OK, apparently a good explanation of “Fear” I found was this…. Fear is a response to threats and danger. Fear should be distinguished from anxiety, which typically occurs without any external threat. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escape and avoidance, whereas anxiety is the result of threats that are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable.

Look at that again …check the part about “Escape and avoidance” What does that mean to you? To me as a smoker “Escape and avoidance” were exactly related to the main cause of why I failed to stop smoking so many times in the past. As a smoker who wanted desperately to stop, I was using fear as my primary emotion and excuse to escape from going through the transition of smoker to non-smoker. That fear is created by a powerful force and source that I will mention later. The “avoidance” element is pretty straightforward.

I used the fear of what would happen when I stopped smoking as an excuse. So this created the avoidance of being an ex-smoker. That fear and avoidance is so prolific because something so powerful and remarkable that convinces millions of smokers not to give up, but to continue, was actually convincing me too.
What was it? What was and is that “Powerful Something”? I will tell you what it is. It is the lies and deceit distributed or endorsed by your Government, the Media and other smokers who believe it. These comical lies are the reasons we have the fear to stop smoking and they are as follows…
You will suffer terrible withdrawal pains when you stop smoking.
You won’t be able to cope with stress.
You won’t be able to think straight.
You won’t be able to relax.
You will be miserable.
You won’t enjoy social activities or going out anymore.
You won’t find new friends. (Unbelievable)
You will be bored out of your mind.

There are others it’s true but they are more related to the false reasons for smoking smokers give that makes them pathetically attempt to fortify the excuses as to why they smoke.

So let us look at all of the above listed so called “fears” individually and have a better understanding of each lie and as I would like to call “Myths” and hopefully eliminate possibly your own reasons why in truth you have this “Fear” to stop smoking …or as I would also like to put it in this way…”Why smokers are afraid of Killing the evil drug monster that is slowly but surely killing them and finally escaping from the slavery of nicotine addiction and becoming an ex smoker”

1. You will suffer terrible withdrawal pains when you stop smoking.
This is probably the most common fear that smokers wishing to stop first think about. I did. I remember saying to myself. “Oh Shit what if I can’t deal with the cold turkey?” However as I now know and the majority of ex-smokers also know that in reality you won’t suffer any actual withdrawal pains.

You as a smoker may have this huge misconception because of other smokers who have tried and failed in the past to stop smoking. Or it might be because the T.V. commercials for nicotine replacement products always show a person that has stopped smoking, getting through the difficult and somewhat painful or stressful period when they first stop smoking with the help of their product. (Click HERE for more info about replacement therapy)

Please remember that stopping nicotine addiction or any other drug addiction will make y

our body go through a noticeable change in state or condition in relation to having drugs put inside it and then not having drugs put inside it. It is extremely important that you get this into your head when you finally stop, that something your body has become accustomed to be is no longer that condition so therefore there will be a feeling of change, of emptiness, or even a feeling of being a little restless. Addictive as nicotine is, it is also very easy to abstain from. For me it was like a hunger feeling. But the good news is that it is merely mental because the smoker thinks that they are being stripped of an actual pleasure. What pleasure? So therefore making it out the initial period of stopping smoking to be bigger than what it actually is.

Some smokers think that the cigarette is actually a normal day to day activity in their lives. They have smoked for so long and now smoking to them is an unnoticeable automatic action. But take that away from them and they will soon notice. Within an hour I’m sure. This is drug addiction.

Here is the extremely “Good News”. Remember, when you stop supplying your body with nicotine there is no pain or suffering. The people who start to suffer are the Governments and Tobacco companies. Only good things start to happen to you and any withdrawal feeling that a smoker or you may feel when you stop is very slight and you will suffer more from the flu. Trust me. Believe it.

2. You won’t be able to cope with stress.
Stress is part of life. Period! You, me, and everyone on this planet will in the future suffer from stress or has in the past suffered from it in one way or another. There is no way around this and there are different levels and different types of stress that we all have to deal with. These may be a fight with a loved one, a dispute with a boss or colleague at work, screaming kids. Maybe it is an illness or idiots on the road when you’re driving. The list is endless and life throws them at you every day.

Let’s look at the smoker who has just had a fight with her husband because he forgot to pick up a prescription for her and its Saturday afternoon now and the pharmacy is closed till Monday. The wife has recently been suffering from bad migraines and needed the medicine to get through the weekend. On top of this her mother called at lunchtime to say she couldn’t look after the kids next week because they were going on a mini vacation till next weekend as from Tuesday. The telephone conversation with Mom had already put her in a bad mood as she now has to find and pay for a babysitter to pick up the kids from school most of next week and then hubby comes homes and has completely forgotten to get the medicine she needs. It’s all too much for her and after the somewhat heated exchange with her husband, she storms out of the house to the garden and lights up a cigarette and somehow unknown to her, the cigarette helps her to feel better with the situation. However this is not true. Really not true. What really happened is this. Her last cigarette was 2 hours ago and she is already 1 hour overdue for her nicotine fix when hubby came home. This means that the addiction would have been prompting her that it is time to feed it. Other chores and errands made smoking a cigarette not possible at the time. So naturally she is already irritated because she hasn’t had her nicotine fix and then the normal life stress with Mom and her husband added more irritation or aggravation to her mental state.

When she runs off into the garden for a smoke the nicotine only temporarily relieves the stress of the addiction and not the situation at hand with her loved ones. This illusion is why people think that smoking relieves stress. It only causes it. Because when you smoke realistically you are smoking to get back to a normal state of being that non-smokers enjoy every moment of the day. Non-smokers experience stress in life too. But they don’t reach for the Marlboro’s when it happens. Smokers become accustomed and automatically light up a cigarette in a time of stress, because the stress will always be around when its time for a nicotine fix.

Put it into your brain that smoking does not relieve stress but only causes it. If you have a normal life stress situation however big or small then you can only deal with it in a normal rational humane way. No cigarette ever solved a real problem for me. It only created more. Have only one type of stress in your life to deal with. Not two.

3. You won’t be able to concentrate or think straight.
Your brain is a wonderful, complex and amazing organ. It can do the most incredible things and it is a machine that needs to be well maintained to function normally. Your brain offers you thoughts and inspirations. It supplies you with images of wonderful memories. It holds your history in life. It does thousands of great things. It really is a truly astonishing piece of equipment. However, your brain will not function correctly and it will have slight malfunctions if its natural source of fuel (Oxygen and nutrition filled blood) is contaminated with toxins and elements of hundreds of unnatural chemicals that come exclusively in a cigarette. When you constantly impede your brain and blood with these poisons there will be an effect. And the effect will be in a negative and diminishing way.Life has many distractions when we are trying to concentrate on something particular. It may be other people talking to you, noises from outside, dogs barking, music and other sounds etc. For us to overcome these distractions we might seek a secluded area in order to focus on what needs our concentration. The smoker no matter where he or she goes will never be completely free of any distractions because there is one distraction implanted inside them that will always interrupt and make demands. It is the “Drug Monster” needing his food, nicotine. And he will stop you concentrating for sure.

When you put nicotine and the other toxins that are in cigarettes into your blood system they immediately start screwing up your veins, your nervous system, your blood and all the other stuff you may know about. I think you do. Once this starts it can and will eventually impede your natural ability to focus and concentrate on the job at hand.

When the time comes for concentration, smokers might have the incapacity to proceed because they experience a nicotine induced mental barrier that stops this natural ability to concentrate. They immediately light a cigarette and think this will help but it won’t. The job at hand is still there, the need for concentrating is also still there so they have no other choice but to get on with it like a normal human being does who doesn’t smoke, when they extinguish the cigarette. Smokers would never blame this inability to concentrate on the cigarette. When they try to stop smoking and the need for periods of concentration comes along and they find it difficult, they blame stopping smoking as the culprit.

I often have times that require long periods of concentration and I do not need a cigarette to start or help me along with it. That’s because human beings don’t need nicotine to function normally. The association with the stress of the objective and the stress of the addiction will only cause you to think that the cigarette will help you concentrate. It won’t. GET IT INTO YOUR HEAD NOW!! If you believe that smoking will aide your ability to concentrate more and that you will suffer without nicotine to do this then you are just certifying failure from the start.

Evidently even to this day after not poisoning myself for such a long time my concentration is STILL intact and HAS somewhat improved. That’s what being an ex smoker has done to me.

4. You won’t be able to relax.
Imagine this. You have been told by your boss that you have to go to a very important work related conference, which is going to last for three and a half hours and he wants you to write down word for word everything that the speakers say. Also the bad news is that the conference hall is strictly non smoking. This is bad news because as a smoker you’re not going to think “Shit! Three and a half hours of listening to some boring conference” You’re going to think “Shit! Three and a half hours without a cigarette! I’m going to die! ” Now on the other hand, if you were a non smoker maybe you will have a moan about having to go to the conference and not be too overjoyed about what your boss wants you to do but so what, shit happens and you will put up with it, and get the job done. But as a smoker there is one thing that completely rules everything else in your life and that is because you are subject to nicotine slavery. You cannot relax until the “Drug Monster” is fed and relaxed himself. But don’t forget (as you know) that it’s only going to be temporary right? Imagine if you were on the brink of a promotion and this conference report would almost certainly guarantee it. But After one hour into the conference Drug Monster needs his fix so you sneak off to find a place where you can give it to him. Only to miss the most crucial part of the conference because it took you 10 minutes to get outside because it’s a completely smoke free building, and ten minutes to smoke it then ten minutes to get back. When your boss finds out that you missed the part he most certainly needed, what then. Even though it was the fault of the slavery you’re not going to be forgiven so easily. What about that promotion? We know… right?

Smokers can’t relax period!

Even after a meal or sex they need that fix. Watch how smokers behave after a meal. They start to fidget and look detached. They need that drug so that they can feel like a non smoker does. The cigarette after the meal is like a home coming party for them. But it’s only because they feel satisfied from the food and it’s naturally time for the fix anyway, that they think it’s a good smoke. Hilarious! Watch that same person when he can’t smoke after a meal. Compare them to a non smoker after a meal. Now that is natural relaxation. A smoker who can’t smoke will rip up the carpet and light it if he had to. It’s true. Just to get to a relaxed state like a non smoker. I once ripped open a tea bag and stuffed it in a cigarette paper and smoked it. It might as well have been an old sock. And the taste Yuk!!…my god! What an idiot I was. What kind of slavery does these things to us? It was the slavery of nicotine that’s what. How can you be a smoker and be relaxed? it’s impossible. Trust me! Believe me! I am so much more relaxed now as an ex-smoker. I can watch a movie completely without having to go out for a smoke. I can cuddle Livia after sex and not think about or stink of tobacco. The moment you stop smoking all this will change. You can and will become a relaxed person. You have wonderful experiences to look forward to and not being interrupted every hour for a nicotine fix. You will be in control and you will be relaxed. Nicotine steals this ability to relax.

Smoking tobacco is just like drinking sea water while your dying of thirst adrift in the middle of the ocean. Eventually the temporary relief the sea water gives only creates a bigger need and the more you drink will theoretically kill you.

5. You will be miserable.
This actually is something that makes me smirk when I hear smokers say this. What is going to make you more miserable? The suffering, the slavery, the poison, the cost, the smell, the potential outcome, the loss, the many other shit things you pay the price for, or freedom from all the above?
You have to be a sadist or a complete idiot to want all of the above. I can’t think of anything better in my life now than to be completely free of that slavery. You will only be miserable if you allow yourself to be miserable. You are free from a prison. Jump for joy. You are going to live longer …jump for joy…You will be in control of your life…jump for joy…You will taste food, have better sex, save money, smell good…jump for joy!!!! If you do all this, it will give you no time to be miserable. Really, believe me, in the back of smokers’ and your mind right now you are already miserable because you smoke and that hounds you all day. Be free, be happy. Like me and millions of other people who stopped smoking.

6. You won’t enjoy social activities or going out anymore
It is true that nowadays more and more cities around the world are making public places smoke free zones. This is fantastic and it is great news not just for the non-smokers of this world, but for the actual smokers who want to become ex-smokers. The reason being is that they have more smoke free places to go to which can help them become ex-smokers quickly if they like to go out socializing with friends. When you stop smoking and you have been used to going out with friends to bars and restaurants where smoking is permitted, and of course you are used to having that glass of wine or bottle of beer in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other, then eliminating smoking from these social activities (which you have become accustomed to over time and now it’s automatic) in the beginning without some formal education and planning, will make you not last five minutes in a social and smoking environment before you want another cigarette.

You need to understand the reasons why you and millions of other smokers who gather socially with friends in bars, nightclubs and discotheques, think it is natural to be drinking and smoking together. This is because socially the majority of smokers have been fooled by the media and the tobacco companies that to enjoy social gatherings it is better or cooler to smoke. Look at movies and videos. They promote smoking extensively like this. When you are with friends on a Friday night in a bar having fun, laughing and joking whilst the alcohol is stimulating your senses in a good way, It’s only natural not to be concerned about how much your smoking. Not just the ones in your hand put also the ones that everybody else is smoking. Now as a smoker, try to imagine the same great night with your friends but without the cigarettes. What differences would there be? I’m sure you can name a few and for sure they will only be “Drug Addiction” related. Will your friends be any less funny or admirable? Will the music in the bar sound different? Will that glass of wine taste differently? Will the conversations be more boring? NO NO NO and NO again! That’s because smokers are sucked into an illusion. A trap that is so powerful that it actually covers up the reality of social enjoyment beautifully. You CAN enjoy your friends’ company, the wine, the music, the fun and everything else that comes with having fun socially without tobacco.

At social gatherings cigarettes have two functions. Firstly they are still the needed drug for the smoker, and secondly they are just a prop, a tool , used by tobacco companies to show that smoking is cool to do when you’re out having fun.

There is nothing cool about smoking. Period! What is cool about killing yourself?

You can go bowling without having to smoke. You can go for a walk in a botanical garden without having to smoke. You can sit in a restaurant without having to smoke. You can drink a glass of wine and talk to friends without having to smoke. This is because all these activities DO NOT require nicotine to enjoy them. When people say they can’t have a glass of wine without having a cigarette, then this is because they have be disillusioned and trapped at the same time. Disillusioned by the media, and trapped by the nicotine addiction. Why don’t non smokers reach for nicotine when they eat in restaurants to enjoy the food? Why can they be together at parties or other social gatherings and laugh and enjoy each other’s company without having to smoke. That’s because in life and to do normal fun things, you don’t need nicotine, cigarettes or tobacco to enjoy them.

Smokers are afraid that if they go to a bar or club and they can’t smoke, then it will be impossible for them to enjoy themselves. What a load of bull. I go out everywhere and have great fun with my friends and I don’t need to smoke to enjoy it. In fact, smoking would make it a miserable night. That’s because smoking is only for feeding an addiction and nothing more. There is no way that anyone who says they enjoy a glass of wine with a cigarette, can justify that the wine tastes better because of the cigarette. Silly! In fact the wine’s taste is actually being compromised by the cigarette. When you do stop smoking the change of the taste in foods and drinks is amazing. That’s because your tongue and taste receptors get back to normal when you stop poisoning them. Also, there is no way that anyone can justify that to enjoy a night out with friends can only be done with cigarettes. This is ludicrous to believe. The reason why I enjoy going out MORE is because I don’t have those dark questions in my mind about smoking. I don’t worry about questions like if the next cigarette is going to give me cancer. I am free from the slavery, so therefore I am happier than before, which means that I can enjoy life more. And enjoy a life that has been given back to me from me.

Don’t be a fool and succumb to the traps laid down by the tobacco companies. They attack and advertise at social gatherings because that is what humans like to do. We are social animals. But we didn’t become social because of nicotine. Nicotine stops us from enjoying this natural activity. You can completely enjoy life without tobacco. I promise you. You are not sacrificing anything in order to enjoy your social life. Nicotine is not the staple to enjoyment. You and your family are. Nicotine is an evil unnecessary thing that diminishes the enjoyment of life completely.

7. You wont find new friends. (Unbelievable! I heard someone actually say this.)
I have more friends now than I did when I was a smoker. I have them because I eliminated certain borders in my life that nicotine addiction puts up. I have improved my level of fitness immensely over the last year that I just cant believe the energy levels I now have, even after working an eight or nine hour day. Bear with me as this is not about health, but making new friends. And there is a relevant point as to why I am talking about my health. Generally in my life I have always been active and I always have done some sort of sport. But as a smoker I really was holding my enjoyment back because I would not be able to go past a certain level of fitness because of the limitations to your lung and blood capacity that nicotine and smoking causes. I would go to the gym , do some weights , the static bike, then a punch bag. But even with this form of exercise and a good diet, I was always being followed by the dark questions in my mind as to who do I think I am kidding doing all these sports trying to look good on the outside, but knowing full fact that my insides were being poisoned and the two just don’t go together. Smoking and sport is a huge No No.

My point here is this. Sport, whether as a profession or as a hobby should always be enjoyed. It’s true that to excel in your chosen sport you need to make some kind of effort to improve your level or skill in it. But still, even this should be enjoyed, and any results that show improvement make it worth the effort, and you feel great because of your achievements. Now as a smoker you can’t do this because you are constantly nagging yourself, fighting with the addiction and suffering from forced limitations.

This takes away the true element of sport or fun activities that require some work from your lungs. As i mentioned, I used to pump weights and I would look in the mirror and see great outside results but I knew I was a mug and I was only lying to myself because to achieve a true healthy strong body did not mean just big muscles, but it meant good strong lungs, a strong heart and clean oxygenated blood. Strong nerve endings, and a whole bunch of other stuff you need to be a completely health strong muscular athlete. I had the muscles. That was it. The rest of me inside was being poisoned and I knew it and I hated it. It was this, that took away the enjoyment of the sport I was doing. I am a good swimmer. I used to play water polo and I knew that I could be great at this sport but something more evil was stopping my potential and that was “Drug Monster”. Being a nicotine addict and doing sports will not make you happy in the long run.

Now, as an ex-smoker this has changed unbelievably in ways that I can’t express. The only thing that I can say is that as a 42-year-old man, I have more energy and strength as I did in my early thirties since I stopped smoking. The sport I do now is “Muay Thai” it is the national sport of Thailand, which is a martial art that combines boxing with strikes from all parts of the body. I don’t intend to go out and bust someone’s nose but I do it for the physical demand it puts on me. If you check out this sport for information you will notice that a smoker would not be able to cope with the training required to do this sport. It’s tough, it’s hard and it hurts sometimes but you know something, I enjoy it so much because of two things.

The first thing is that it tests my levels of fitness and also increases it every week. This is great and I am happy that my fitness levels are improving constantly. I can kiss this goodbye if I was still smoking. No limits to my fitness are laid down by smoking and drug addiction. I am the one who controls my limits and my capacities. Complete control of your life is fantastic. Please believe me. And you can only experience this beautiful feeling when you are a non-smoker.

The second is all the new friends I have made at the club. I have become happier in my life because I am surrounded by a great bunch of guys and girls. (who are non-smokers by the way too) I don’t feel lonely during the week. I don’t feel bored during the week because I have something to look forward to three times a week at the gym, and it’s great when we get together to meet for dinner or bowling. It is so good to have this in my life now. I am not saying that as a smoker you won’t or don’t have friends. All I am saying is that any new activities or hobbies that you start can be fully enjoyed and they can bring new friends into your life by making it happier and more fulfilling in everyway. If you Smoke 40 cigarettes a day, you are not going to go out and meet people in other great , smoke free places. Maybe at the moment you only go to bars and clubs. But as an ex-smoker you can broaden your horizons, eliminate boredom, join clubs, and most importantly, be happy and meet new friends. Also, because I have chosen to help other people become an ex-smoker like I am, I am interacting with hundreds of people from around the world who seek my help and are making my life worthwhile again. It is wonderful! Nicotine addiction cannot help do this or anything like this because it is always on top of your priorities in life. And it only impedes your confidence, and the true qualities that you should be expressing everyday of your life. Stop being controlled by nicotine.

Just remember to get out there and meet new people. Join clubs. Go learn belly dancing or swimming. Go do anything that requires some sort of physically activity and where you can’t smoke and you will love it because it’s new, it’s healthy, you will make friends and most of all you will be a completely different and happier human being! I promise.

8. You will be bored out of your mind.
Please read No.7 again!!! That should drop a hint regarding the fear about boredom. Just remember that boredom is a state of mind. If your bored do something other than poison yourself.

So…what is there to be afraid of now that you have read this article? Nothing! Absolutely nothing I promise you?

is a connection. But I think that money (if this is money) just the pure dollars in your bank account is one of these things still. Would you apply drugs to that graph? Like addiction? Probably no also. Because that first hit is what the addict wants. Usually they’re out, right? Till the next hit. But the idea of drugs is that they create their own demand. So what you’re having there is your demand is like this the first time you try it, and then it goes out. Because your tastes are …

Upcoming Child Custody Battle over Michael Jackson’s Children Provides Insight into Delicate Issues

Monday, January 18th, 2010

When Michael Jackson unexpectedly passed away last week, the world was stunned by the death of the fifty-year-old entertainer who left an indelible mark on pop culture. He was preparing for a world tour that was advertised as his fans’ last opportunity to see the King of Pop perform on stage. Whether motivated by a desire to sing again or by undeniable financial problems, the tour that would have brought hundreds of thousands into arenas will never happen. Along with his amazing legacy of music and a sorted legal history, Michael Jackson also leaves behind an endless number of questions surrounding his unusual personality and life. What exactly was the cause of his death? An official pronouncement from the coroner has been postponed pending toxicology reports, but rumors are rampant concerning his addiction to prescription drugs and the courts want the opportunity to speak with his various doctors. Will we now learn more about the plastic surgeries and other alterations he chose to endure? Finally, there is a question that likely will be answered in a California courtroom over the weeks and months to come. What is to become of Michael Jackson’s children? In the middle of all of the chaos and media frenzy, I hope we all remember these three innocent participants in the family drama.

Michael Jackson leaves behind three children whose new home is yet to be determined—Prince Michael, age twelve, Paris Katherine, age eleven, and Prince Michael II (also known as Blanket), age seven. The first two kids are the product of his marriage with the former nurse for Mr. Jackson’s dermatologist, Debbie Rowe, which lasted from 1996 to 1999. Ms. Rowe originally gave up all custodial rights when the two terminated their marriage, but successfully appealed to have parental rights restored following Jackson’s arrest in 2003 on child molestation charges. The youngest boy was born to a surrogate mother who has never been identified. In fact, official documentation lists “None” in the space indicated for the birth mother. So, the California courts are left with two birth mothers who have had little or no contact with their children. What are the possible options at this point?

California law considers several issues when determining child custody cases, using the guiding factor of the “best interest of the minor child” as the overriding influence in such decisions. First, the courts examine the best environment for a child’s safety, health, and welfare. They also check for a history of physical abuse or violent crimes committed by any of the parties seeking to share in the custody. The stability and continuity of an environment is critical in the eyes of the court. Children need to have established bonds and patterns with the person who is deemed to be the primary caretaker. Unless there are circumstances that require otherwise, such as specific health or educational needs, all efforts will be made to keep siblings living together. Finally, the court must give “due weight” to the wishes of the children in this difficult situation, assuming that their ages and reasoning ability allow them to express such a preference.

Earlier this week, Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, was granted temporary guardianship of all three children. In a will written by Michael Jackson in 2002 and released the day after Mrs. Jackson received temporary custody, the courts revealed that this placement was in accordance with Jackson’s last wishes. However, Mr. Jackson does not necessarily have the final say in where his children will live until they reach adulthood. The well-known celebrity attorney Gloria Allred said about the situation, “”If he did indicate a preference, that will be given great weight, but that will not be determinative. Children are not property, they cannot be willed to another person.” So far, however, Katherine Jackson is the only possible guardian who has expressed an outright and definitive interest in caring for the children. She has a long-standing relationship with all three of the kids and is surrounded by other grandchildren of the Jackson family. This environment could prove the most stable and loving for Prince, Paris, and Prince Michael II. Charlotte Goldberg, a family law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, said that in all child custody cases, “It’s really a balance between continuity and stability and a biological relationship.”

Where does the current state of affairs leave Debbie Rowe? Experts believe that she has the strongest legal claim to the two oldest children, if she should choose to assert her parental rights. As this article is being written, Ms. Rowe has just requested and won a delay in the upcoming custody hearing as she decides whether or not she wants to pursue her rights to raise her two children. This legal move today was the first communication that Ms. Rowe has offered since the death of Michael Jackson a week ago. If she does decide to move herself to the front of the custody line, which would likely be her legal prerogative, Ms. Rowe would need to undergo an evaluation by the court to determine if she is the best person to care for the children.

Whether a celebrity or someone who has never found herself on the cover of a tabloid magazine, the emotional issues involved with child custody situations are always difficult. Above all else, it should the desire of the courts and all parties involved to make the decision that is in the best interest of the children. Where will the children feel most secure and loved while working through a painful life transition? Who is surrounded by the best support network when extra assistance is needed with the children? Who can provide the most solid financial support? If you are seeking custody of precious children in your life whose circumstances are changing for reasons ranging from divorce to death, you should seek the assistance of a family law attorney who has the experience needed to be sensitive to the heightened emotions that are involved. If you also happen to be in the public eye, you will want to find legal representation that brings knowledge of how to navigate through the magnified issues of celebrity law. While it may be difficult to focus on these practical needs when you are caught up with tending to a family in pain, making these decisions early will make for an easier road ahead.

Use Aromatherapy To Relieve Stress

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Aromatherapy is the use of fragrant oils extracted from plants in the treatment or prevention of disease and help in the reduction of stress, often called essential oils. The term essential indicates that the oil carries distinctive scent (essence) of the plant, not that it is an especially important or fundamental source.

Since essential oils are so potent, many can irritate the skin unless diluted with carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or olive oil. Essential oils are extracted by distillation but can also be extracted by expression or solvent extraction.

How To Use

Essential oils can be used through the skin (massage, shower, adding to bath water), and inhalation (ceramic burner, vaporizer, handkerchief, pillow).

Inhalation. Add a few drops into a ceramic burner with a lit candle underneath. When the oil warms up the scent will be dispersed into the air.

Vaporizer. Add a few drops to boiling water and inhale the vapours.

Skin Application. Add several drops to almond or olive oil, pour into your bath water, climb in and relax. You can also buy ready made oils for baths from some pharmacies. If you shower, mix up half the quantity and use on your shower sponge, flannel or body scrub.

Infusion. Some herbs and essential oils can be used as an infusion in a tea but always check before use.

Which to use

Firstly, you need to identify which essential oils are best for treating stress and meeting your needs. Lavender, clary sage, chamomile and lemon are a few of the common ones.

Lavender is a relaxant:-

add a few drops to warm bath water, climb in and relax;add a few drops to water and put into a spray bottle. Spray around your home when you feel stressful.

Clary Sage* gives a feeling of being uplifted:-

add to a vaporizer to help you relax;add a few drops to a carrier oil and get someone to massage you to help you relax.Caution:- Expectant mothers, those with active tumours or cancer must contact their medical practitioner before using this essential oil.

Chamomile is a relaxant:-

place a few drops on your pillow or on a handkerchief under your pillow to help you to relax and have a good nights sleep.

Lemon gives a feeling of being uplifted, helps you to relax and feel calmer:-add a few drops to a vaporizer to help you relax and feel calmer.

Mandarin* helps you feel more joyful and calmer:-

add a few drops to a vaporizer, sit back and relax

Peppermint* helps to clear your mind:-

add a few drops to a carrier oil and get someone to massage the stress away; can also be infused and drunk as a tea.

*Clary Sage, Mandarin and Peppermint oils MUST not be used by pregnant women as they could cause blood thinning and premature labor.

*Warnings*

*Aromatherapy products are never to be used in place of medical treatment.

*Essential oils are potent, so they always need to be used in safe quantities.

*Using more than the recommended dose can be as dangerous as overdosing on medicines.

*If you are pregnant, epileptic, suffering from high blood pressure or already taking medication consult your medical practitioner or a qualified aromatherapist

6 Physical Changes During Pregnancy

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Not every woman will look like that gorgeous model in that magazine. Similarly, not every pregnant woman will still look beautiful and svelte than before. Fact.

The ugly truth is nine out of ten pregnant women suffer from some kind of physical discomfort, not to mention their fatigued and ungainly appearance – sluggish movement, flabby tummy, arms and legs, thicker waist, excess flab and more.

New mothers are already stressed by what they saw in mirrors. It could get worse if they are unable to regain pre-pregnancy looks and yet have to look after a crying baby. New mothers are prone to post-natal depression, especially if they are deprived of family support and they are still recovering from childbirth.

Luckily, doctors observe that through proper education and preparation, new mothers are able to accept and cope with these body changes as expected.

Sometimes, medication and counseling are necessary if doctors detect symptoms of disturbances for some mothers. Neglect is never the solution as it may lead to or aggravate post-natal depression.

Obstetricians and gynaecologists advise the following changes may occur during pregnancy. It definitely helps you to learn to accept these changes if you understand more about them.

“I’m tired all the time”

Giving birth saps a lot of your energy, so it is natural after childbirth you will feel weakness or dizziness. The recovery usually takes from two weeks to two months, depending on your physique. That’s why in some countries like Singapore, mothers are allowed maternity leave up to 3 months, to recuperate.

The Chinese view this as loss of “qi”, therefore you can replenish “qi” by consuming tonics and keeping warm with clothes and socks. Actually the preventive measure is to build up your blood store before and during pregnancy by consuming adequate iron, folic acid and multivitamins.

You may also feel aches in the back and lower pubic bone areas due to the strain on the ligaments and muscles. However, these are only temporary discomfort.

“My breasts become bigger”

If you find your breasts grow from B cup to C cup, don’t be alarmed – your breasts are getting ready for breastfeeding. Furthermore, hormonal changes during the pregnancy cause more melanin to deposit into the skin cells at the nipples and areola, leading to darkening of nipple or areola skin tone.

Breastfeeding can cause your breasts to lose their sizes permanently, or become saggy and loose. If you are a heavy-breasted woman, you have to be mentally prepared for this.

“What are these marks on my body? “

They are called stretch marks which are formed as result of a split in your skin’s supportive tissue to accommodate a growing baby. They are initially red and will turn darker. However, after pregnancy, they may turn silvery or blue.

The bad news is they are also permanent, though they may fade in intensity. So far, no medication or creams are effective in removing them, but some do help to speed up the fading effect.

“What is incontinence ?”

Incontinence means that you lose control of your bladder or bowel which can be embarrassing. This could be due to physical injury or trauma to the pelvic floor muscles.

The likely causes of injury are a difficult forceps delivery, prolonged labour, or vaginal delivery of a large baby. In the case of difficult delivery, use of Caesarean could help to reduce pelvic floor trauma.

It is a symptom but not a disease itself, therefore it can be treated. Don’t be afraid to seek medical help. If you refuse treatment now, you’ll face higher risk of contracting rashes, sores, skin and urinary tract infections.

Your social life will also be affected as you will try to avoid your family and friends for fear of embarrassment.

You should follow a well-balanced diet, and avoid food or drinks that may irritate their bladders, such as caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks and spicy foods.

Citrus fruits and juices must be cut down too. For diabetes patients, sugar intake must be reduced in your diet so as to control the glucose level.

Exercising and strengthening the muscles of the pelvic floor, widely known as Kegel’s exercise named after Arnold Kegel, M.D, helps to cure incontinence.

“Why are my veins so obvious now?”

You may notice more veins become more prominent in your legs during pregnancy. These veins, called varicose and spider veins, appear because the weight of your womb exerts more pressure on the major vein (inferior vena cava) on the right side of the body. This in turn increases the pressure in the leg veins.

Pregnancy also cause blood vessels walls to relax due to higher progesterone levels, thus magnifying the problem.

Some useful tips are

1.Wear support or compression stockings

2.Don’t stand too long

3.Lift your legs on some cushions when resting

4.Lose some weight

5.Surgery such as sclerotherapy and vein stripping. However, be patient to see if the veins disappear after childbirth.

“My hair is falling out !”

It is actually normal due to hormonal changes and usually happen three months after delivery. During pregnancy, the hormone cause the hair follicles to delay the fallout of the hair.

After delivery, the hormone levels revert to normal and those hair that suppose to drop out previously, now happen all at the same time. And you thought you are losing out more hair than before.

If you are worried, you may just take some multivitamins.
