Adolescent Accusation – III

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

There is no denying the fact that a child is only a child, not a boy, not girl and in preservation of the rights of the children, the role of media like TV, Radio, Newspaper and magazines cannot be overlooked. They can hub the deserted offspring who are breathing beyond poverty and strewn here and there and even in isolated places. Due to deficiency and underdeveloped socio-economic factors in the country, the children are lying neglected and are compelled to engage themselves in reprehensible profession like begging, thieving and pick-pocketing etc., and in this connection it is noted that ours is a developing country and the rate of child labour is increasing day by day. The only reason is illiteracy and poverty for which we are losing bright manpower every time. The respective media should explore such neglected talents and should create the awareness for the wealthy people who have capacity to educate them. The government should hunt and assemble them for their best education for which the proper citizen of the country will be developed in a systematic manner. The States Parties of the world should recognize the right of a child who has been placed by the competent authorities for the purposes of care, protection or treatment of his or her physical or mental health, to a periodic review of the treatment provided to the child and all other circumstances relevant to his or her placement. In UN charter, it has been stated that the States Parties should recognize for every child the right to assistance from social safekeeping, including social indemnity and should take the necessary measures to accomplish the full awareness of this right in harmony with their general law.

It has been stated the States Parties should esteem the right of the child who is estranged from one or both parents to preserve personal relations and direct contact with both parents on a regular basis, except if it is contrary to the child’s best interests. Where such separation results from any action initiated by a State Party, such as the detention, imprisonment, exile, deportation or death (including death arising from any cause while the person is in the custody of the State) of one or both parents or of the child, that State Party should, upon request, provide the parents, the child or, if appropriate, another member of the family with the essential information concerning the whereabouts of the absent member(s) of the family unless the provision of the information would be detrimental to the well-being of the child. States Parties should further ensure that the submission of such a request should of itself entail no adverse consequences for the person concerned. To comprehend how women executive in higher-ranking levels in organisations in the world distinguish their roles, how they feel they are being perceived and what strategies they currently use to ensure their effectiveness within their organizations, Louise Coyle, a renowned economist, conducted a research in 1996 on the role of in a developing country and her research phenomena she accomplished that these women worked within the establishment of their own organisation, indeed they were part of the establishment and as such would not overtly acknowledge that discrimination takes place. In a survey of corporate men and women, Hennig and Jardim, distinguished economists concluded the idea in 1996 in the sense that the male and female do have different beliefs, attitude and assumptions about themselves and each other, and about organisations and managerial careers. These differences result in female styles, emphases and responses that are functional for success in management.

It may be pointed out that Valerie Hammond & Vicki Holton stated that in 1984, 41% of the workforces were women (9.5 millions women) in the UK; by 1991 this had risen to 44% or 11 million employees. Twenty eight per cent of all working women held an executive or professional position. A survey by the British Institute of Management found that the number of companies employing women executives increased from 49% in 1986 to 64% in 1990. In the same period the proportion of women directors grew from 4% to 8%. But there are no women chief executives among Britain’s top 100 companies as listed in the Times 1000.Roger Young, the institute’s Director-General said “Men are the key hurdle to women in supervision. Despite some growth, old- fashioned sexist attitude are still common and represent a real, not an imagined, barrier. After analysis of women manager’s statistics of some developed country’s Louise Coyle (1996) concluded that gender discrimination and segregation crosses geographical boundaries and cultures. Women managers face the same discrimination worldwide. Patricia G. Steimhoff & kazuko Tanaka, the statistical analysis of women labour force in Japan, it was observed that, in 1990 women constitute 41% of the labour force with the important shift from the status of family worker to wage earner. By 1990 only 17% of the women in the labour force constitute either paid or unpaid family worker. They commented that, due to the peculiarity Japanese ethos of organisation in Japan women are militated against in the area of management. This is because the vast majority of managers are promoted through the ranks with in-house company training schemes. Seniority is the primary factor. Women are obviously at a decided disadvantage because they tend to have a career break after marriage. They also cited government-led commission surveyed 1497 companies in 1979 and reported that women made up 23% of the workforce but only 0.3 % held decision-making positions. In their intensive surveyed, they commented that the situation has not improved greatly over the last 20 years. Women, at present, are in inferior standing in the world of work in relation to their male counterpart. Brew and Garavan, illustrates that “Women have equality on paper, not in practice”. They concluded that structural and attitudinal barriers dispossess women of opportunity and in order to have optimal effect women-only training must be part of a comprehensive programme designed to remove each one of these barriers. In another article Ms McCarthy, E. examines inequality at a more detailed, almost anatomical level, in the areas of:

Recruitment and hodgepodge;

Education and advancement;

Support;

Assessment;

Service arrangements.

Where a child is illegally deprived of some or all of the elements of his or her identity, States Parties should provide appropriate assistance and fortification, with a view to re-establishing speedily his or her distinctiveness. It has been stated the states Parties should make sure that a child should not be alienated from his or her parents against their spirit, except when competent authorities subject to legal appraisal to settle on, in accordance with applicable law and procedures, that such separation is necessary for the best interests of the child. Such determination may be necessary in a particular case such as one involving ill-treatment or disregard of the child by the parents, or one where the parents are living disjointedly and a resolution must be completed as to the child’s place of abode. In accordance with the obligation of States Parties under article 9, paragraph 1, applications by a child or his or her parents to enter or leave a State Party for the purpose of family reunification should be dealt with by States Parties in a positive, humane and expeditious manner. States Parties should further ensure that the submission of such a request should entail no adverse consequences for the applicants and for the members of their family. A child whose parents reside in different States should have the right to maintain on a regular basis, save in exceptional circumstances personal relations and direct contacts with both parents. Towards that end and in accordance with the obligation of States Parties under article 9, paragraph 1, States Parties should respect the right of the child and his or her parents to leave any country, including their own and to enter their own country. The right to leave any country should be subject only to such restrictions as are prescribed by law and which are necessary to protect the national security, public order public health or morals or the rights and freedoms of others and are consistent with the other rights recognized in the present Convention. It has been stated the States Parties should take measures to combat the illicit transfer and non-return of children abroad. It has been stated that to this end, States Parties should promote the conclusion of bilateral or multilateral agreements or accession to existing agreements. It has been stated the states Parties should assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child, the views of the child being given due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child. It has been stated that for this purpose, the child should in particular be provided the opportunity to be heard in any judicial and administrative proceedings affecting the child, either directly, or through a representative or an appropriate body, in a manner consistent with the procedural rules of national law.

It has been stated the child should have the right to freedom of expression; this right should include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child’s choice. The exercise of this right may be subject to certain restrictions, but these should only be such as are provided by law and are necessary:

 For deference of the rights or name of others; or

 For the security of general safekeeping or of community order or of public wellbeing or morals.

It has been stated the states Parties should respect the right of the child to self-determination of contemplation, scruples and religion. It has been stated the states Parties should value the rights and duties of the parents and, when appropriate, legal guardians, to offer track to the child in the exercise of his or her right in a manner consistent with the evolving capacities of the child. It has been stated the freedom to manifest one’s religion or beliefs may be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary to protect public safety, order, health or morals, or the fundamental rights and freedoms of others. It has been stated the states Parties recognize the rights of the child to freedom of association and to freedom of peaceful assembly. It has been stated the no restrictions may be placed on the exercise of these rights other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others. It has been stated the no child should be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his or her privacy, family, home or correspondence, or to unlawful attacks on his or her honour and reputation. It has been stated the child has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks. It has been stated the states Parties recognize the important function performed by the mass media and should ensure that the child has access to information and material from a diversity of national and international sources, especially those aimed at the promotion of his or her social, spiritual and moral well-being and physical and mental health. To this end, States Parties should:

 To prop up the accumulation intermediate to disseminate information and material of social and cultural benefit to the child and in accordance with the spirit of article 29;

 To give confidence international co-operation in the production, exchange and dissemination of such information and material from a diversity of cultural, national and international sources;

 To hearten the production and dissemination of children’s books;

 To support the mass media to have particular regard to the linguistic needs of the child who belongs to a minority group or who is indigenous;

To egg on the development of appropriate guidelines for the protection of the child from information and material injurious to his or her well-being; we should bear in mind the provisions of articles 13 and 18.

It has been stated that the states Parties should use their best efforts to ensure acknowledgment of the standard that both parents have common household tasks for the education and expansion of the child. Parents or, as the case may be, legal guardians, have the primary responsibility for the upbringing and development of the child. The best interests of the child will be their basic concern. It has been stated that for the purpose of guaranteeing and promoting the rights set forth in the present Convention, States Parties should render appropriate assistance to parents and legal guardians in the performance of their child-rearing responsibilities and should ensure the development of institutions, facilities and services for the care of children. It has been stated the states Parties should take all appropriate measures to ensure that children of working parents have the right to benefit from child-care services and facilities for which they are eligible. It has been stated that the States Parties should take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect the child from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation, including sexual abuse, while in the care of parent(s), legal guardian(s) or any other person who has the care of the child. Such protective measures should, as appropriate, include effective procedures for the establishment of social programmes to provide necessary support for the child and for those who have the care of the child, as well as for other forms of prevention and for identification, reporting, referral, investigation, treatment and follow-up of instances of child maltreatment described heretofore, and, as appropriate, for judicial involvement. A child temporarily or permanently deprived of his or her family environment, or in whose own best interests cannot be allowed to remain in that environment, should be entitled to special protection and assistance provided by the State.

 It has been stated that the states Parties should in accordance with their national laws ensure alternative care for such a child.

 Such care could include, inter-alia, foster placement, adoption or if necessary placement in suitable institution for the care of children. When considering solutions, due regard should be paid to the desirability of continuity in a child’s upbringing and to the child’s ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic background.

It has been stated the states Parties that recognize and/or permit the system of adoption should ensure that the best interests of the child should be the paramount consideration and they should: To ensure that the adoption of a child is authorized only by competent authorities who determine, in accordance with applicable law and procedures and on the basis of all pertinent and reliable information, that the adoption is permissible in view of the child’s status concerning parents, relatives and legal guardians and that, if required, the persons concerned have given their informed consent to the adoption on the basis of such counseling as may be necessary to recognize that inter-country adoption may be considered as an alternative means of child’s care, if the child cannot be placed in a foster or an adoptive family or cannot in any suitable manner be cared for in the child’s country of origin to ensure that the child concerned by inter-country adoption enjoys safeguards and standards equivalent to those existing in the case of national adoption to take all appropriate measures to ensure that, in inter-country adoption, the placement does not result in improper financial gain for those involved in it to support, where appropriate, the objectives of the present article by concluding bilateral or multilateral arrangements or agreements and endeavour, within this framework, to ensure that the placement of the child in another country is carried out by competent authorities or organs.

It has been stated that the States Parties should take suitable actions to ensure that a child who is seeking immigrant status or who is measured a migrant in accordance with applicable international or domestic law and procedures should, whether unaccompanied or accompanied by his or her parents or by any other person, receive appropriate protection and humanitarian assistance in the enjoyment of applicable rights set forth in the present Convention and in other international human rights or humanitarian instruments to which the said States are Parties. For this purpose, States Parties should provide, as they consider appropriate, co-operation in any efforts by the United Nations and other competent intergovernmental organizations or non-governmental organizations co-operating with the United Nations to protect and assist such a child and to trace the parents or other members of the family of any refugee child in order to obtain information necessary for reunification with his or her family. In cases where no parents or other members of the family can be found, the child should be accorded the same protection as any other child permanently or temporarily deprived of his or her family environment for any reason, as set forth in the present Convention.

It has been stated that the States Parties make a distinction that a emotionally or in the flesh render inoperative child should enjoy a full and decent life, in conditions which ensure dignity, promote self-reliance and facilitate the child’s active participation in the community. States Parties recognize the right of the disabled child to special care and should cheer and ensure the lean-to, subject to available resources, to the eligible child and those responsible for his or her care, of assistance for which application is made and which is appropriate to the child’s condition and to the circumstances of the parents or others caring for the child. 3. We should bear in mind the special needs of a disabled child, assistance extended in accordance with paragraph 2 of the present article should be provided free of charge, whenever possible, taking into account the financial resources of the parents or others caring for the child and should be designed to ensure that the disabled child has effective access to and receives education, training, health care services, rehabilitation services, preparation for employment and recreation opportunities in a manner conducive to the child’s achieving the fullest possible social integration and individual development, including his or her cultural and spiritual development States Parties should promote, in the spirit of international cooperation, the exchange of appropriate information in the field of preventive health care and of medical, psychological and functional treatment of disabled children, including dissemination of and access to information concerning methods of rehabilitation, education and vocational services, with the aim of enabling States Parties to improve their capabilities and skills and to widen their experience in these areas. In this regard, particular account should be taken of the needs of developing countries. The benefits should, where appropriate, be granted, taking into account the resources and the circumstances of the child and persons having responsibility for the maintenance of the child, as well as any other consideration relevant to an application for benefits made by or on behalf of the child. It has been stated that the States Parties recognize the right of every child to a standard of living adequate for the child’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development. The parent(s) or others responsible for the child have the primary responsibility to secure, within their abilities and financial capacities, the conditions of living necessary for the child’s development. It has been stated that the States Parties, in accordance with national conditions and within their means, should take appropriate measures to assist parents and others responsible for the child to implement this right and should in case of need provide material assistance and support programmes, particularly with regard to nutrition, clothing and housing.

It has been stated that the States Parties recognize the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health. States Parties should strive to ensure that no child is deprived of his or her right of access to such health care services and it is evident that they should pursue full implementation of this right and, in particular, should take appropriate measures:

 To diminish infant and child mortality;

o ensure the provision of necessary medical assistance and health care to all children with emphasis on the development of primary health care;

To combat disease and malnutrition, including within the framework of primary health care, through, inter alia, the application of readily available technology and through the provision of adequate nutritious foods and clean drinking-water, taking into consideration the dangers and risks of environmental pollution;

To ensure appropriate pre-natal and post-natal health care for mothers;

To ensure that all segments of society, in particular parents and children, are informed, have access to education and are supported in the use of basic knowledge of child health and nutrition, the advantages of breastfeeding, hygiene and environmental sanitation and the prevention of accidents;

To develop preventive health care, guidance for parents and family planning education and services. States Parties should take all effective and appropriate measures with a view to abolishing traditional practices prejudicial to the health of children.

States Parties undertake to promote and encourage international co-operation with a view to achieving progressively the full realization of the right recognized in the present article. In this regard, particular account should be taken of the needs of developing countries.

From the above viewpoint, it is clear that a child is only a child, not a boy, not a girl. If we look around the world, we will find that there is no difference between men and women because they are equally positioned in the society in respect of education, social customs, research and ruling the country and in this respect, we should not disseminate a child being neglected and rather, the social force should pick such contribution to develop them in a proper way. We should not hate a child being a beggar or a maid servant. We should educate them and the authority should come forward to help them by providing hierarchical needs in question. It has been seen even, in many families, good behaviour is reflected towards them. Even, they are very much careful about building their moral and institutional shapes. In our country, many children are passing their lives miserably and the adversities know no bounds. In order to remove such bottleneck against developing, the society should come forward with a definitive purpose to settle them in a healthy environment so that they can flourish themselves in a befitting manner. There is no doubt that due to lack of proper education and good environment specifically who are living in slums, may be involved in immoral activities like thieving, robbing, snatching and terrorism. In order to amend them from being fallen, the society should rehabilate them in a proper way, if necessity the media can create awareness in this respect. In order to love the child, one should have feelings of responsibilities regarding patience, forgiveness, good bahaviour and affection.

The Ten Commandments – What Should #11 Be?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

As many of you know, the Ten Commandments are a set of moral guidelines that were believed to be written by God, and given to Moses in the form of two stone tablets.   Many Christian and Jewish believers alike have since revered these historic commandments as a compass towards eternal life.

Much has changed in the world since these criteria were established, and many new acts of deviance and evil have risen.  There are new habits and addictions that could not have even been imagined in Biblical times.  This begs the question, what should the 11th Commandment be?

To recap for those of you who may have missed Church last Sunday:
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10. Thou shalt not covet.

So here we are, with our Ten Commandments.  From where I’m seated, it seems like there may be quite a bit missing from the list.  With a list like this, I’d be pardoned for even my College years. So once again the question is before us, what should the 11th commandment be?

Drug Use
Speaking of the college years, our first option is the use of drugs.  We’re not talking about sipping the sacred wine, or even puffing on the holy herb here and there. We are talking about drug abuse, the type that is often a precursor to many of the other sins already set in place by the original Ten Commandments.  Let’s focus on the actual drug use, and not the events which may follow.  Drug abuse is defined by the Treatment Solution Network as “Habitual use of drugs to alter one’s mood, emotion, or state of consciousness”.  One could argue that an altered perception of earth would not be the way God intends men to live. Others may say that the Lord would not want men to destroy themselves with such fruits of temptation. Still others may argue that drug abuse only affects the person involved, and does not pertain to religion any way whatsoever. Should the compulsive use of drugs to alter ones perception be deemed a sin in the eyes of the Church?

Pornography
This has been a hot topic now, particularly with the rise of the internet in modern culture.  The Ten Commandments read “thou shall not commit adultery”. This certainly leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and much room for debate.  It seems that looking at Pornography was never mentioned, probably because there was none at the time.  Some will argue that this may already addressed with “thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife”.  Thy neighbor’s wife however represents a real person, and not a digital or photographic image as is the case with pornography.  Should admiring a nude person photo be seen as the next biggest sin in the eyes of the Church?

Masturbation
Not far from Pornography, you’re bound to find a handful of this one.  We will treat this separately however, as it does represent a different action.  Even the most holy of men must have been tempted on those lonely hot nights in Bethlehem. Many of the churches today will preach that masturbation is wrong, and the modern day equivalent of Adam and Eve tempted by the apple. If it was not intended for by God, how come it was not in the original 10 Commandments? Should having sex with oneself merit the 11th evil on the list of Commandments?

Pedophilia
In the original Ten Commandments, it is said that “thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife”. Nowhere however does it state that one should lust after children. It seems like it’s only been the recent past that children can no longer Trick-Or-Treat by themselves on Halloween, or play in the yard without being watched by a parent. The internet combined with Dateline has brought more attention to the evil that lurks behind even the most trustworthy looking individuals. Those predators that lust after children are looked down upon as the dredges of society, and even at the bottom of the food chain in places such as prison. They are the lowest of the low, the real life boogie men of a modern age. Should this be deemed the 11th Commandment in the eyes of the Church?  My personal opinion is that we should change the sixth commandment to “Thou shall not kill, unless they touched a child”.

We know there many more that could have been added to this list, but wanted to offer up the blatantly obvious.  We felt these would top the list, but look forward to your comments.  It will be interesting to see what many of you think would make a good 11th commandment.

Ovarian Cysts While Pregnant – Limited treatment options

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

During pregnancy, your body goes through tremendous physiological changes.  One of these can be the development of ovarian cysts.  While there are normally many treatment options available for this condition, pregnant woman will find they are more limited.

Your doctor may perform an ultrasound to study the size and shape of the cyst.  If the results show it to be simply a benigh fluid filled sac, it will normally go away on its own and not require any additional treatment.  However in the mean time, the cyst can cause pain, swelling, bloating, and anxiety which isn’t good for the mother or her baby.

If necessary, your Doctor may recommend a surgical option.  While many believe that it is safe to operate on a pregnant woman through the 2nd trimester, many woman don’t want to put any extra stress on the baby or go through any kind of surgical procedure and its associated risks.

Therefore an excellent option is to seek natural treatments which are available for ovarian cysts during pregnancy.  To get the most immediate relief, you need to reduce bladder pressure and increase your intake of fiber rich foods.  Extra pressure on your lower abdomen can be painful enough on its own.  But when you add the additional stress from a cyst, it can be downright awful!

Try drinking lots of herbal tea like chamomile.  Be sure it is caffeine free.  This kind of tea has been shown to be very effective in relaxing both the mind and body as well as help to flush excess toxins from your body.

Try to stay relaxed as stress usually makes things more uncomfortable for you.  If you do develop ovarian cysts during this time, it doesn’t have to be a terrible ordeal.  If you apply some of these simple techniques, you’ll find fast relief.

National health reform could jeopardize California patient protections

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

A host of medical services that insurers must pay for in California — from cancer screenings to diabetes treatment to two-day hospital stays for delivering mothers — could be weakened or lost if the health care measures pending in Congress become law.

Currently, any health insurer selling policies in California must comply with the state’s extensive consumer protections. The reform measures would allow insurance firms to sell policies across state lines if certain conditions were met, bypassing California’s rules in favor of the requirements in the state where the policy is issued.

The result, critics warn, would be a “race to the bottom,” in which insurance companies set up shop in states with the weakest consumer rights and skirt California’s lengthy list of mandated health care services.

“This has the potential to wipe out all of these hard-fought protections,” said Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, who led the drive for several of those mandates as a state legislator earlier in her career and is now threatening to vote against a health care overhaul that weakens California’s standards.

Speier and 28 other Democratic House members from California outlined their concerns about interstate health insurance sales in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., last week.

“Practically speaking, insurers will domicile their plans in states with less stringent regulations and market to the population in more protective states like ours, just like nationally chartered banks have done,” stated the letter, which was signed by several other Bay Area Democrats. “California residents will lose out if state protections are undermined.”

California could take steps to preserve the state’s protections, but that could be tricky given the power of the insurance lobby.

Selling insurance across state lines has long been touted by Republicans and insurance firms as a way to spur competition and reduce premiums. More interstate sales, they say, would mean more choices for consumers.

“One of the challenges and barriers to competition is all the varying and conflicting state mandates that exist across the country,” said Robert Zirkelbach, a spokesman for the industry trade group America’s Health Insurance Plans, arguing that the patchwork of rules contributes to higher premiums.

The health care reform legislation would create a few avenues for interstate insurance sales. Under one scenario envisioned by the Senate bill, insurers could sell so-called “multistate” policies with benefits meeting minimum standards that would be defined by federal regulators after health care legislation passes.

If California wanted to mandate benefits that exceed federal standards — including those now in place — it would have to add them back through new legislation passed in Sacramento. Moreover, California would have to pay the extra costs of any additional benefits it mandated — either by compensating individuals enrolled in the plans or by paying insurance companies directly.

That could lead to a situation, critics say, in which many of the state’s current consumer protections are stripped away. To get them back, “We would have to go back and fight these battles again, one by one” in the state Legislature, said Jerry Flanagan, a health care advocate for Santa Monica-based Consumer Watchdog.

Under another scenario, states could enter into compacts in which insurance companies would be subject to the regulations of the state where they issue policies instead of the customer’s home state. For that to happen, California leaders would have to voluntarily enter into agreements with other states, knowing that California’s own health care protections could be ignored.

Although that might seem far-fetched, it’s not inconceivable, Speier argues, given the insurance industry’s political influence in Sacramento.

Allowing health insurance to be sold across state lines could affect California’s top insurers in different ways. Those owned by large national companies, such as Anthem Blue Cross and UnitedHealth Group, would likely benefit from the ability to sell streamlined policies to customers in many states, while potentially avoiding California’s strict rules.

But the change could mean more competition for insurers concentrated in California, such as Kaiser Permanente.

UnitedHealth declined to comment, while representatives for Blue Cross and Kaiser Permanente did not respond to requests for comment. The list of mandated benefits in California numbers in the dozens, ranging from asthma care for children to post-mastectomy reconstructive surgery. Aside from such benefits, state laws give consumers other protections designed to boost their leverage with insurance companies. For example, if a medical procedure is denied or delayed by an insurer, patients can seek an independent third-party medical review.

According to Speier, more than half of the 7,000 denials or delays of care reviewed through that appeals process since 2000 have been reversed.

“There really is a lot at stake,” she said.

A vote in the Senate on health care reform is scheduled Thursday morning.

In another potential detriment to California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday said that the health reform measures would saddle the state with an additional $3 billion to $4 billion in annual Medicaid costs to provide insurance to low-income residents. In a letter to Pelosi and other California congressional members, he warned that the health care measures would impose a “crushing new burden” on the state and urged the lawmakers to amend the legislation before final votes in Congress.

“As the partner responsible for implementing this program,” wrote Schwarzenegger, who has been generally supportive of the push for national health care reform, “I am telling you that our Medicaid program is already at the breaking point, and if federal health care reform is passed without addressing the underlying faults in the system, health care reform will fail

Detailed Information on Microtia

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Microtia is an abnormally small external ear (auricle). It can be unilateral (one side only) or bilateral (affecting both sides). Microtia is thought to be a “non-inducible” type of congenital malformation, which means that it is not typically the result of the mother’s behavior during the pre-natal period (such as the use of caffeine or alcohol). Microtia can occur in defined syndromes such as Treacher Collins Syndrome, hemifacial microsomia and other associated syndromes. In most cases, only one ear is affected. In that case, it is called Unilateral Microtia. If both ears are affected, it is called Bilateral Microtia.

Microtia can cause difficulties with wearing headphones and glasses. It is also occasionally associated with syndromes that can cause balance problems, kidney problems, and jaw problems, and more rarely, heart defects and vertebral deformities. There are 4 distinct grades of microtia, ranging from mild to moderate. Grade I microtia results when a child develops an almost normal looking ear that is smaller than normal, but functioning. Grade II microtia involves developing a partial external ear, resulting in partial loss of hearing. Patients with grade II microtia may have a closed external ear canal, allowing them to hear only muffled sounds.

Grade III microtia, the most common form of microtia, involves the lack of an external ear and ear canal, as well as eardrum. Patients with Grade III microtia frequently have a small nub or piece of skin where the external ear should reside. Grade IV microtia is the most severe form of the defect, where patients have no ear and accompanying anatomical structures of the ear. Microtia is an ear deformity that occurs one in every 6,000-12,000 births. Microtia and Atresia usually occur together. Microtia occurs more often in boys than girls. There are various options to help the hearing status on children with microtia and Artesia.

The two major ways for repairing microtia depend upon the material used for the ear framework. One method employs a living sculpture from the patient’s own tissues (rib cartilage) and the other uses a framework of firm synthetic plastic. This spells out the main difference between the two techniques: one type of ear is created from your own bodily tissues whereas the other is an ear of foreign material. In addition, children with microtia should be evaluated by ultrasound for renal or urinary tract anomalies for potentially treatable anomalies. Cognitive delay is not typical for isolated microtia.

The Many Health Benefits of Garlic

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

For generations the health benefits of garlic has been preached as a natural remedy to curb disorders such as high blood pressure – even bad breath! What are the health benefits of garlic and garlic supplements that we don’t hear about on a regular basis? Did you know that garlic can keep away mosquitoes and prevent acne?

Garlic has been known as a boost for the immune system as it has been a common key in prevention of the common cold and flu viruses present in the air throughout the winter and fall seasons. Many take garlic in preparations for these season changes and the germs in the air. Experts look to garlic as a broad spectrum antibiotic that can prevent bacteria from becoming a cold or flu. It boosts the immune system to disallow the onset of bacteria and viruses. Used as a preventative measure, garlic is effective in preventing cold and flu symptoms and onset.

Are you seeking clearer skin? Garlic could help everyone from teenagers to pregnant mothers suffering from fluctuating hormones that can cause acne symptoms and breakouts. The symptoms of acne can be decreased when garlic is ingested into the body. Garlic should not be applied directly to the skin, as it can cause redness and swelling. It should be ingested, as it can reap the benefits of clearer skin.

As a treatment for high blood pressure garlic is popular. Supplements taken daily can decrease bad cholesterol levels (HDL). In this case, garlic supplements are used to determine the effects of the supplements on the levels of cholesterol within the body. Garlic can be used to offset partial damages caused by eating foods that are bad – cholesterol wise.

Should you use fresh garlic as a remedy or stick to garlic supplements? Using garlic supplements comes without the bad breath that can be associated with garlic. Did you know that the stronger the odor and taste of the garlic clove, the more sulfur in it? The higher the level of sulfur within the clove, the better the effects that the garlic can have on the body. The benefits of raw garlic are thought to be higher than those of garlic supplements.

Garlic is important part of the nourishment in the body which could help to prevent cancer cells in the body. Research has shown that the use of raw garlic on a regular basis reduces the amount of free radical cells within the body. These cells have been linked with cancer and are undergoing research on a daily basis.

If you are looking for a way to decrease the attraction of mosquitoes than garlic is the answer. Allicin is the compound in garlic which can deter the natural attraction of our skin to those pesky mosquitoes. It has been speculated that the mosquitoes are overpowered by the scent of the garlic, which can escape from the pores and unable to bite.
Garlic is beneficial for our health and should be implemented into a diet for a healthy bodily system.

Addiction Freedom Secrets – 4 Stages of Self-Esteem

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

The mainstream approach to addiction recovery consists of two primary components, neither of which yields better than a 5-7% success ratio, nor do they address self-esteem related issues.  If you’re like most, you may not realize that 98% of all addiction treatment options utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and/or the Twelve-Step Program as their primary modalities. Ironically, both of these approaches fail to properly address low levels of self-esteem. Instead, they offer counterproductive principles of stoicism and powerlessness which further exacerbates the situation. At this point, you may be asking what a low level of self-esteem has to do with addiction. Well, the answer is everything! You see, the root cause of addiction is the emotional trauma caused by family dysfunction. These patterns of control, abuse, and part-time parenting rob a person of their personal power and undermine self-esteem. And, it’s no secret that individuals suffering from addiction not only have a low level of self-esteem, but they also live in a world of self-blame and shame. I like to call this condition “Wounditis!”  Commonly, they blame themselves for their family’s dysfunctional behavior. As an example, “My Mother verbally abused me by constantly telling me I was worthless, stupid, and ugly, but she’s right, I am!” Or, “My Father bludgeoned me with a hockey stick on a regular basis and broke my bones, but I was a bad kid and deserved it!” This type of self-blame destroys ones self-esteem and drives addictive behavior. Obviously, the two individuals mentioned above don’t love themselves, and they view themselves as being flawed and worthless, which by the way is absolutely untrue and ridiculous! However, the more someone tells you that you are worthless, the more you begin to believe them! Let’s face it! If you really loved yourself and were brimming with self-esteem, would you be drinking destructively or abusing drugs? Therefore, if you want to overcome your addiction, you’re going to have to seek the truth through liberation and restore your self-esteem through empowerment.

For your benefit, I have outlined the four stages of self-esteem below. Notice that liberation is the first. This is not by chance since the remaining stages are difficult, if not impossible, to reach if you do not obtain the first.

1.Liberation

 To set somebody free from traditional socially imposed constraints.

If you are in fact suffering from addictive behavior, begin by examining the path that brought you to your present state. What types of family dysfunctions played a role in undermining your self-esteem? Were your parents verbally, physically, or sexually abusive? Were they controlling and manipulative? Did the fail to provide the love, guidance, and bonding by showing up part-time for a full-time job? Or, did they themselves abuse alcohol or drugs? These are the questions that must be answered. Once you have uncovered these negative patterns, you must liberate yourself from them by putting a stop to the dysfunctional behavior. This must be done by either setting some boundaries, or in extreme cases severing the relationship.

 2. Self-reflection

A complete and individual personality, especially one that somebody recognizes as his or her own and with which there is a sense of ease.

 Once you have liberated yourself from patterns of dysfunction, it is time to re-evaluate who you are, what you believe in, and the principles you stand for. It is hard to be at ease with yourself, if you fail to live your life in truth or stand for a set of principles. Define what those are and stand like a rock, refusing to let anyone persuade you otherwise.

 3.Self-love

To hold ones self in hi merit or regard, concerning their personality, principles, and actions.

Once you have adopted a new set of principles and beliefs, you can now begin to uncover who you really are. Get to know yourself! Discover your true authentic self, and realize that you have the power to change and create anything you want in life. We are all the same and we are all connected. So, the playing field is a level plane! Note: (Mediation can be helpful in this process.)

4.Transformation

A complete change – usually into something with an improved state, appearance, or usefulness.

Change is incredibly hard and very frightening for most people, isn’t it! The fact of the matter is, most people avoid and even resist change. But, you can’t avoid it, and you certainly can’t stop it. At the end of the day, life is a journey of change. And the sooner you realize that the better off you’ll be. Let’s use the following parable to describe the process of change; your standing on the dysfunctional side of the road and on the other side is change. You can stay on the dysfunctional side of the road and say “even though this side is pretty screwed up, it’s a little more comfortable than the other side because I don’t know what’s over there!” Or you can venture into the middle of the road, confused about whether to go back or to cross.” And, I don’t think I need to tell what happens when you stand in the middle of the road to long, do I! Or, you can close your eyes and walk across in faith, knowing that what ever is on the other side has to be better than where you were! But, this is scary for people isn’t it? In reality, it just comes down to fear! You really do have “nothing to fear but fear itself!”

Curing Bad Breath

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Bad breath, or ‘halitosis’, is a common issue for many people. Bad breath may be caused by something as simple as what we eat, or may stem from more serious issues, such as bacteria in the mouth or digestive system issues. When bad breath becomes worse or cannot be resolved, it is known as ‘chronic’ halitosis.

Good daily oral hygiene, which includes brushing, flossing and rinsing, is your first defense in keeping bad breath at bay, despite having your natural teeth or dentures. This is because decaying food particles stay stuck in spaces between your teeth, on your gums and on your tongue, so other than that quick swig of Listerine, brushing and flossing are mandatory. Consider purchasing an electric toothbrush. While some can be quite pricey, several inexpensive brands are available in battery-operated versions, which help you do a better job of brushing for $5.00 or less.

Another lesser-known cause of bad breath is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease which cause persistent bad breath. Dry mouth, a condition in which the mouth does not produce enough saliva to cleanse your mouth of decaying particles can also lead to bad breath. And finally, strong foods like garlic and onions or certain medications, cigarette and cigar smoking can be contributing causes.

For some people, despite their best efforts are good oral hygiene, avoiding smoking, and other methods to cure bad breath, the problem persists. For these individuals, persistent bad breath may be related to a more serious health problem that is gastrointestinal, respiratory or sinus-related.

Here are some tips for natural bad breath treatments you can try at home:

• Chew a peppermint candy
• Try taking one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before every meal
• Eating pumpkin daily helps some people
• Try brushing your teeth with baking soda instead of over-the-counter toothpastes. Be sure to brush your tongue where many bacteria live
• Drink a tea made from parsley
• Drink chamomile tea, which also has a soothing effect
• Gargle with salty water to loosen bacteria and encourage it to wash away

When beginning any oral health care routine designed to rid yourself of bad breath, remember that mouthwashes and rinses only temporarily freshen breath, masking the real reason why the bad breath is occurring in the first place. It is wise to follow the recommendations of The American Dental Association, who acknowledge the effectiveness of some anti-microbial mouth rinses in reducing plaque and gingivitis. Aside from systemic diseases, excellent oral hygiene habits never fail in reducing and eliminating that pesky halitosis. Don’t forget what your mother told you…”Brush and floss your teeth every day and see the dentist every six months to make sure your teeth are white and your breath stays fresh.”

If your bad breath persists despite your best efforts to stop it, make an appointment to visit your family physician for a checkup to see if another disorder is the cause. Your physician will perform a physical and possibly refer you to a specialist based on his or her findings.

Common Causes Of Chronic Yeast Infections – What Are The Common Causes Of Yeast Infections And Candida?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

So what are the common causes of chronic yeast infections? Believe it or not, Candida which causes over 90% of all yeast infections is often passed on from a mother to a newborn baby during birth. It is only when this healthy balance of microorganisms in your body is disrupted that a yeast infection develops. Under normal conditions the fungus Candida lives quite happily in your intestines, your mouth, and your groin and generally on the human skin. The infection when gone awry creates localized problems such as a vaginal yeast infection or a yeast infection of the mouth, thrush.

There are a host of factors that actually cause a infection to multiply explosively and get out of hand. The list of common factors that can cause a yeast infection is so extensive that I am going to select a few common factors that can cause an infection to occur. The first is sugar, the second is a weak immune system and the third is drugs.

Sugar actually feeds a yeast infection. So if you want to alleviate your problem right now you must cut out sugar from your diet in as many ways as possible. Even simple carbohydrates such as white bread, white rice that can readily convert into glucose (sugar) need to be traded for complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and whole wheat bread. Candy, sugary desserts, coke, sugary juices, bottle drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks all need to be cut out. Watch out for foods that contain sugar but you don’t even know, read labels. Ketchup for example contains tons of sugar.

A weak immune system is another major reason why you would develop a yeast infection. a poor diet, smoking, consuming alcohol, and other environmental pollutions will weaken your immune system and allow Candida cells to multiply explosively.

Drugs, specifically yeast infection drugs (ironically), antibiotics and birth control pills will all create conditions for Candidiasis. The only way to cure a yeast infection is through natural means. Yeast infection drugs make the strain more resilient to the body’s natural infection fighting organisms.

These are but a few of the common causes of chronic yeast infections, what’s more important is that right now you could begin to get relief using natural remedies. Most of which cost less than $5 to use!
