A fable that I read many years ago sums up my point perfectly:

In my own life, as a teenager and into my early twenties, I got into drugs and alcohol and ended up broke, literally homeless, and in trouble with the law. I had no hopes, dreams or sense of direction in my life. I was as lost as anyone can be, at a crossroads, and in tremendous pain. I felt that there had to be something better than this. So I decided to choose something better for myself.

(Notice that I did not know what to choose, but I knew what I did not want, which was my first step.)

I had to stop drinking and drugging, get a job, and look for a way out, which wasn’t easy for a 22-year old. Boy, did I feel sorry for myself.

Looking back nearly 30 years later, what seemed like the end of the world was actually the beginning of a new world, which I might never have found had I not crashed and burned at such a young age. At 48 years old, I now live a life I never could have even imagined when I was 22.

Finding Opportunities within Challenges

This morning, I was talking with a dear friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer for the third time. She shared with me that both previous times she underwent diagnosis and treatment for cancer, she learned incredible lessons along the way. While she would not wish this on herself or for anyone, she can recognize the gifts her journey has brought to her.

She went on to say that after the shock of the news that the cancer had reoccurred, she had a realization.

While she doesn’t know if this third episode will be “her time” or not, realized that, either way, she needs to address some unfinished business with two of her children. While she would ordinarily prefer to avoid this issue, she now feels she must deal with it. Through her terrible news, once again, comes the urgency and courage to face her toughest issues head on. She has decided to be honest with her children and share what she knows in her heart needs to be said.

Successful people share with me, over and over, similar stories about some perceived terrible event like a divorce or illness or loss that changed the entire course of their lives dramatically. Yet that change may also have brought them to a place that is indescribably better than they could ever have imagined. Had those supposedly terrible experiences not happened, they might not have found the resolve to make other changes happen along the way.

I am not suggesting that there are no such things as tragedies or losses. What I am saying is that loss and pain can be just one aspect of a difficult experience; positives can result from making meaningful experiences out of our challenges. For example, one mother who lost her child to a drunk driver formed Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), an organization that has saved many lives. Helen Keller used a lack of sight or hearing to teach the rest of us important lessons about living. Nelson Mandela spent half his life in prison trying to bring peace to South Africa yet emerged from his prison cell to lead his country as its first post-apartheid president.

The next time you perceive something as really bad, try also to look for the gifts in disguise. It’s all in the way you look at it.

I think my boyfriend might be a narcissist but when you are in a relationship with someone, I know it is hard to see clearly but I feel like our relationship is so difficult. 1 He’s a recovering alcoholic/ drug addict
2 I know he’s slept with prostitutes in the past and I’ve caught him on websites for local escorts since his rehabilitation.
3 He has a serious anger problem. It is nearly impossible to have a conversation with him when we are disagreeing. He will say terrible things to me and then later act like nothing happened.
4 He loves to be the center of attention and will “entertain” and be loud, tell jokes sometimes at my expense, when we are with a group or in public and has a hard time paying attention to me when I’m speaking. He will often talk over me or cut me off and then accuse me of being quiet and backward because I don’ speak. He will completely ignore me and pay attention to others.
5 I once had a Yorkie (I admit it was a trying dog. Impossible to potty train) and he hated it would hit it smack it around be cruel to it and eventually “accidentally” killed it while I was at work one day! I will never know what really happened. I think he lacks empathy.
6 I feel very distant from him like we are not connected emotionally. He can be really cold.
7 He will make strange demands of me. Once he told me I had to move in with him or he would break up with me. When I didin’t move in with him, he moved in with another girl. (His best friends sister she does have a BF) He was once forcing me to call his mother and other family memebers because he told me that I needed to be more involved. His family never calls me! He was trying to get me to invite myself places with them. He then told me that I was backward and weird when I told him that was a little strange.
8 He consistently tells me that I have low self esteem and yesterday we got into a fight and he told me I had no personality,no friends and that I was lame.
9 He keeps in touch with all of his ex girlfriends and will talk on the phone with them for extended periods of time when I am around. When I get upset about it, he tells me it is because of my low self esteem.

At one time, doctors believed that the hormones associated with pregnancy were a good protection against depression. In more recent years, however, there has been a growing body of evidence that depression during pregnancy is a serious problem, affecting 10-20% of all women – the same proportion that women as whole suffer without adding pregnancy into the equation. With figures like that and with the added concern that depression can factor into the health of the baby, it is important to know something about how depression and pregnancy are connected.

First, it’s important to recognize what depression is and what the symptoms are.

Depression is a mood disorder that may have both biological and behavioral roots. Although healthy women frequently experience some of the following symptoms during a pregnancy, depression is usually diagnosed when the patient experiences three or more of the following symptoms in the space of two weeks:

A sense that nothing feels enjoyable or fun anymore
Feeling blue, sad, or “empty” for most of the day, every day
Difficulty concentrating
Extreme irritability, agitation, or excessive crying
Trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time
Extreme or never-ending fatigue
A desire to eat all the time or not wanting to eat at all

If a woman experiences three or more of these, she may be suffering from clinical depression and should report the symptoms to her doctor.

Depression is a serious disorder, and is more than just having “the blues.” Untreated depression can interfere with a woman’s ability to care for her self during pregnancy, and can push a woman to neglect vital personal care, thus hurting her unborn child. In extreme cases, the condition can also put her at risk for suicide, and for abuse of substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs. Depression may also interfere with the ability to bond with the child, and can also increase the risk for having an episode of depression after delivery (postpartum depression). In addition, recent studies have shown the possibility of links between depression in the mother and such serious conditions as premature delivery, low birth weight, spontaneous miscarriage, and gestational hypertension, or preeclampsia.

Doctors feel that there are several major causes which can contribute to a depression during pregnancy. Having an existing history of clinical depression or PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, a severe type of premenstrual syndrome or PMS) is paramount among these, as a predisposition to the disorder can increase the chance that pregnancy and its attendant stresses will bring on an episode. Age at time of pregnancy is also a factor — the younger the woman is, the higher the risk of depression.

There are also environmental factors to consider. If the woman is living alone, without the support of a partner, and has limited social support; if there are already multiple children in the family, or there is a history of marital conflict and ambivalence about the pregnancy, there is a greatly increased risk of a significant clinical depression.

If a pregnant woman believes that she is experiencing depression, she should seek medical advice immediately. This is not a condition that will simply go away; treatment to avoid the serious consequences listed above is vital.

Fortunately, there are many ways to treat depression during pregnancy. One of the most important is for the woman to take a step back and realize that she may not have to do everything she did before the pregnancy. If a social network and supportive partner are available, much of the self-imposed stress of trying to maintain a normal, pre-pregnancy routine can be alleviated by doing less while others take up the slack. If these resources are not available, psychotherapy is an effective way to help the patient get at root causes of feelings of helplessness and low self-worth, thus allowing her to cope better.

Self care is critical – developing good sleeping habits, regular diet and exercise routines and the like are also effective treatments. Medications are also available, but as with any drugs taken during pregnancy, there are risks that must be considered. Some antidepressants have been associated with serious side effects for the baby; any use of these drugs should be discussed carefully with a trained doctor so that risks are balanced against the benefits. Keeping in mind that depression is a serious illness; there are times when the benefits of treating a depressive episode with drugs outweigh the possible downside.

As with any medical condition that occurs during a pregnancy, depression requires a skilled diagnosis and treatment by a trusted specialist. Women who are at risk for depression or who are experiencing the symptoms owe it to themselves to address the problem as soon as possible.
