Could my mother stay psychotic forever?
January 9th, 2010My mother has been on many meds for several years including prozac, elavil, vicodin 750 mg, xanax, valium and 6 weeks ago was switched from vicodin to oxycontin for her spinal stenosis, but she has many other health issues including COPD. It seems that her memory and personality got worse since they switched her to oxycontin 40 mg. She had to be taken to the hospital where they ran tests and she was found to be medically fine, but mentally she is psychotic. They have switched her back to vicodin and taken her off prozac, put her on depakote and she is in a mental facility. Drs say we have to wait and see. However, it has been a week and she is hallucinating, paranoid and delusional. Anybody know how long it might take for her to “come back” to reality?
IT sounds like the medication is the cause of the mental problems, my step father had simular problem on one of his medications. After they got him off that stuff it took a couple of weeks.
We had to go a research every medication he was given to find out what the possible cause was, the doctors did not want to admit that the medicine was the cause.
I would say she needs to get off as many of the medications as possible. There have been so many incidences in history where people were put on ‘miracle drugs’, only to find out 10 years later that their health, physically or mentally, is destroyed.
I am guessing that she did not have the best diet either, seems that would definitely not be a priority. Long term nutritional deficiencies can cause ALL negative physical and mental symptoms/disturbances, depending on which vitamin/mineral/phytochemical it is.
A lot of medical doctors just don’t prioritise. They have too much education on pharmaceuticals and not enough on nutrition and lifestyle, which play the biggest roles in our health.
Pharmaceuticals can’t be trusted because of the money that rests ontop of their sales. Clinical trials to prove the safety of them are altered by extremely wealthy individuals who just want to get them out onto the market and get richer. It’s a terrible industry for the most part.
Your mother may be fine, she may come out of it, but she may not. I think she needs some kind of alternative help, because the doctors are obviously making her much worse. Look up some other kinds of practitioners that can help with her diet (if she will even eat at this point). My prayers are with you
it can take days, weeks, months or years.
it is just not predictable.
But she is taking so many strong meds that some doc should compare the meds to her symptoms to she if she is overly medicated or improperly medicate.
if i were taking that many strong drugs, i would be acting psychotic.
