The Naked Truth About Cellulite Treatments

Friday, January 8th, 2010

As long as I have been old enough to read and watch TV, I can remember seeing ads on how to remove cellulite. In my mid 30′s, I graduated from simply watching ads to actually purchasing products – a lot of products. Nothing worked. But now there is hope.

As we ladies get into our 30′s and 40′s, almost all of us develop some degree of cellulite on our thighs and buttocks. It doesn’t matter about your weight, your age, your body type, your skin color or your religion. Cellulite does not discriminate. The grim statistics show that between 80% and 90% of all women in the western hemisphere will develop cellulite at some time in their life.

What causes cellulite?

While the problem is sometimes hereditary (thanks, Mom!), most of the time the condition is brought on by poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive drinking. Foods high in fat, sugar and artificial additives are among the top culprits in our diet. Our fast paced lifestyles deprive us of the time we need to plan out and prepare a well balanced meal, therefore we end up at the nearest drive thru and eat our meals on the run.

Not only is the fast food habit unhealthy and hard on our hearts, it wreaks havoc on our skin and causes fat pockets full of trapped toxins and water to accumulate. These fat pockets, known as cellulite, cause the unsightly dimpling effect and the orange peel texture on our thighs, buttocks, stomachs and arms.

Is there a cure for cellulite?

While there are many so-called “cures” on the market that claim to totally rid the body of cellulite and prevent it from coming back, it is widely believed that the condition can be improved but never totally eliminated. The use of anti-cellulite products or treatments can greatly reduce the appearance of cellulite, but other changes in lifestyle may be required as well. These changes may include weight loss, dietary changes, incorporating an exercise program, and less smoking and drinking.

What works best?

That is the question every woman asks. The truth is that there are many effective treatments for cellulite. The most pronounced difference between the types of treatments would be the cost factor. Surgery is extremely expensive and questionable, and the cellulite reduction services offered at many spas can run into the $1000′s. The simplest and most cost effective method is to use a cellulite removal cream in the privacy of your own home. These creams can range from $12 – $100 for a month’s supply.

When trying to choose the best cellulite treatment cream, it’s important to take the following factors into consideration.

what are the ingredients used by the company and are they safe? Many companies use asthma drugs to combat the cellulite while others use all natural ingredients.

How much does the product cost? The most expensive products are not always better and the least expensive products may be a total waste of your money.

How easy is the product to use? Some products are very easy to use and are absorbed quickly. Others have an odd texture, unpleasant fragrance and don’t absorb well.

To get the answers to these questions, check out our reviews of the top 5 cellulite removal products on the market. We look at how the products work, the cost and, most importantly, the results.

Ultimate Guide To Avoiding Hair Loss

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Hair loss (Androgenetic alopecia) refers to the reason of hair loss that is influenced by the androgen hormone, the genetic tendency for balding and aging. Because hair loss is caused by these hormones, treatment is available to immediately and dramatically prevent the loss of hair.

Androgenic Hormones

In general, normal men including women make male hormones. Testosterone, underestimation, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are the most common that they produce. Androgens are manufactured by the men’s adrenals and testicles, and in women, by their adrenal glands and ovaries. In both sexes, these hormones are important but take place in different concentrations and amounts.

When hair follicles are exposed to DHT, a genetically prone individual, over time, leads to androgenetic alopecia, or female and male pattern baldness.

In particular cells of the hair follicle, as with in the sebaceous glands, there are enzymes called 5-alpha-reductase that are in high levels, converting testosterone which is then carried to these areas by the blood, and into DHT.

Hair loss myths:

Myth #1: Hair loss of an individual is inherited from the mother side.

Not true. Genetics is one factor of hair loss, it can be inherited from either the father’s or the mother’s side.

Myth #2. Frequent cutting of hair will make it grow thicker.

Not true. Although when the hair is cut, it would appear thicker at first, after three days or so, your hair would drop off and new hair would grow, having the same diameter as the pre cut hair.

Myth #3. Wearing a Hat Can Cause Hair Loss.

Not true. The hat can help by blocking off the sun’s harmful rays. Although wearing a hat for a very long period of time may cause sebum accumulation due to temperature changes and can react with cholesterol creating a hardened sebum plug that will cut off oxygen circulation causing the hair to fall out.

Myth #4. DHT is the reason for hair loss.

Not true. Although an over production of DHT is a significant reason for hair loss, it is not the only cause.

Myth #5. Frequent shampooing and blow drying lead to hair loss.

Not true. Heat can damage the hair, reason for brittle hair; it does not harm the roots of the hair.

Even worse, some perscription drugs are known to cause hair loss. Avoid if at all possible the following drugs:

- Cholesterol-lowering drugs:
- clofibrate (Atromis-S)
- gemfibrozil (Lopid)

- Antidepressants:
- tricyclics, amphetamines

- High blood pressure:
- atenolol (Tenormin)
- metoprolol (Lopressor)
- nadolol (Corgard)
- propranolol (Inderal)
- timolol (Blocadren)

- Antithyroid:
- carbimazole
- Iodine
- thiocyanate
- thiouracil

- Ulcer drugs:
- cimetidine (Tagamet)
- ranitidine (Zantac)
- famotidine (Pepcid)

- Anticoagulents:
- Coumarin
- Heparin

Actions you can take to prevent hair loss:

- Stop coloring or perming your hair very often for it can damage it
- Limit exposure of your hair to chlorine
- Avoid exaggerated brushing or combing wet hair
- Use a conditioner every after shampoo to make grooming manageable and easier
- Regulate heat exposure. Blow-drying, hot-curling and exposure to straightening irons may damage your hair over time
- Avoid medications that can lead hair loss such as Vitamin A, testosterone products, beta blockers, certain antidepressants and certain cholesterol-lowering agents
- Too much alcohol should be avoided. Be careful in choosing your hair care products as some contain alcohol and can contribute to hair dryness, brittle and hair that is prone to breakage.
- Tight ponytails and braids can lead to hair damage
- Maintain a healthy diet, eating lots of fruits and vegetables and drinking enough water
- Birth control pills can contribute to hair loss
- Consult your doctor if should you notice abnormal hair loss, as certain medical conditions such as lupus or having polycystic ovaries, or hyperthyroidism can cause hair loss

Vitamins you can take to prevent hair loss:

- Thiamin ( B1)
Containing the mineral sulfur, this is the essential element of the hair that gives gloss and shine.

- Riboflavin (B2)
This vitamin is vital for body cell breathing, ensuring efficient oxygen utilization for cell repair and production.

- Niacin (B3)
Helps to widen capillaries and vessels thereby increasing the blood circulation to the scalp to help stimulate hair growth. It also may reduce the cholesterol build up which is essential since cholesterol on the scalp will convert to the enzyme 5 alpha reductase.

- Pahtothenic Acid (B5)
This vitamin helps in restoring hair color and brightness. It works with the amino acid Tyrosine Folic Acid, PABA and Copper in the deterrence white and gray hair.

- Biotin (B7)
Biotin is a widely used ingredient in hair products due to its hair promoting properties. Biotin increases hair cortex elasticity , prevents breakage, and thickens hair cuticle.

- Cobalamin (B12)
Regenerates red blood cells for healthy hair.

- Pyridoxine (B6). Responsible for protein intake balance, it helps in transporting amino acids to the proper tissues. This is also essential in the conversion of one amino acid to another like the conversion of Methionine to Cysteine. With Inositol, they regulate oil flow to the scalp and the skin.

Dangerous Acne Treatments For Pregnant Women

Friday, January 8th, 2010

When you suffer from acne, it is usually a good idea to treat it in some way. However, this is not true all of the time. There is one time in life that you cannot treat acne when you want to and that is during pregnancy. This is one of the most delicate times of a woman’s life and she needs to take extra care for herself in other ways. When she does feel like treating her acne, she has to be extremely cautious and equip herself with correct information from a doctor or dermatologist.

This advice must be remembered even by those people who may get pregnant in the near future or who have had a baby recently and are still breastfeeding. The following medications are not good for anyone who is pregnant as they can cause harm to the unborn fetus or to the mother herself:

The first type of treatments we will look at are hormone therapies. These can include spirolactone, flutamide and estrogen. They are ones you should never take while pregnant. They can be very harmful and can lead to some very serious problems for both the child and mother.

The next treatment is Isotreinoin. This one can also put a pregnant woman’s health and child in danger. This drug can have nasty effects for those who are pregnant as well as those women who are currently breastfeeding. If you are allowed to take this drug while pregnant, you must make sure to be frequently monitored by a qualified physician. You should stay away from this treatment completely if you are trying to conceive.

Oral tetracycline type treatments such as minocycline, doxycycline and tetreacycline must never be a treatment option for they too will do you no good while pregnant. Again, they must not also be used by mothers who are breastfeeding as they can be a threat to both of your lives. Some of the other common side-effects of these types of medications include bone disorders and permanent tooth discoloration.

The last treatments that you need to ignore when pregnant are topical retinoids such as tretinoin, adapalene and tazarotene. Just like all the above treatment methods, these too are hazardous to your health and that of your baby.
Regardless of whether you are pregnant or not, it is unwise to use any of the above mentioned methods.

If you want to treat your acne while pregnant, you should remember to never risk the health of yourself or of your unborn child for a slightly prettier face. Stick to very safe remedies such as daily facial cleansing and drinking lots of water and eating healthier foods such as fruit and vegetables. Ask your doctor or dermatologist for a non-toxic and preferably natural topical treatment you can use for acne that contains no dangerous chemicals that could effect the health of your baby. There may be some supplements that they can recommend that will actually benefit your skin and your health at the same time.

Factors Which Cause Eating Disorders

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Eating disorders is not caused by a single factor, there are many factors that can play a role in the appearance of these disorders like cultural and family pressures, emotional and personality disorders and also genetic and biological factors.

Similar personality traits like low self-esteem, dependency, and problems with self-direction are present to people with eating disorders. Specific personality disorders or behavioral characteristics that might put people at higher risk for one or both of the eating disorders have been determined by researchers.

The following personality disorders like avoidant personalities and dependent personalities mostly in anorexia and borderline and histrionic personalities mostly in bulimia and narcissism which can be present in anorexia and bulimia too have been reported by studies. Patients with bulimia or anorexia can present one of these personality traits. The more important factor in determining treatment choices may be the patient’s specific personality disorders even if they are anorexic and bulimic.

Avoidant personalities are present to people with anorexia. The symptoms which characterize this personality disorder are: being a perfectionist, being emotionally and sexually inhibited, having less of a fantasy life than people with bulimia or without an eating disorder, not being rebellious, or usually perceived as always being “good”, being terrified of being ridiculed or criticized or of feeling humiliated.

Behavioral and eating pattern can be developed by the person with both anorexia and avoidant personality disorder. So for some individuals the only way to obtain love is achieving perfection, with all that involves. Trouble-free and attaining some ideal image of thinness make part of the drive for perfection. In this case the individual is driven to demand nothing, including food. A sense of being even more imperfect and a renewed sense of striving for perfection precede the failure to achieve love. Anorexic patients have a total lack of self but generally people with eating disorders are not typically suicidal. Through process of not-eating they try to revenge on those whose love is always out of reach.

Borderline personalities can be present to people with bulimic anorexia. The following characteristics can be present to these people like: frantically fearful of being abandoned, unable to be alone, difficulty to control their anger and impulses, prone to idealize other people and unstable moods, thought patterns, behavior and self-images. Emotional weapons like temper tantrums, suicide threats, and hypochondriasis can be used by the people with borderline personalities for causing chaos around them. The difficulty in treating bulimia can be the severity of this personality disorder and it can be more important than the presence of psychological problems, such as depression.

The following personality traits like inability to soothe oneself, inability to empathize with others, need for admiration, hypersensitive to criticism or defeat can be present to people with bulimia or anorexia which are often highly narcissistic. Depression and anxiety disorders can be present to patients which have eating disorder but also can be present in families of these patients. It is unknown if emotional disorders, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are causes of the eating disorders.

About 69% of patients with anorexia and 33% of patients with bulimia have obsessive-compulsive disorder which is an anxiety disorder. It is believed that eating disorders are variants of OCD. In compulsive behavior, repetitive, rigid, and self-prescribed routines that are intended to prevent the manifestation of the obsession, may be present obsessions which are recurrent or persistent mental images, thoughts or ideas. Generally women with anorexia and OCD may become obsessed with exercise, dieting, and food. Compulsive rituals like weighing every bit of food, cutting it into tiny pieces, or putting it into tiny containers are often developed at these patients. Other anxiety disorders like phobias, panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been associated with bulimia and anorexia.

At people with eating disorders, especially anorexia, depression is present which is more severe in darker winter months. Also the patients with bulimia suffer from a specific form of bulimia which is worse in winter. May seems to be the peak month for suicide because the onset of anorexia appears to peak in this month. An eating disorder is rarely cured by treating and relieving depression. Social, psychologic or possibly biologic factors can cause a distorted view of one’s body called body dysmorphic disorder which can be associated with anorexia or bulimia but can also appear without any eating disorder. In this case emotional disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression are commonly to people with this disorder. A disorder in which people have distorted body images involving their muscles has been reported by experts and it is present to men which believe that are “puny” and results in excessive body building, preoccupation with diet and social problems.

Another factor which is present in triggering and perpetuating eating disorders is negative family influence. Children with insecure attachments are present in family with parents who fail to provide a safe and secure foundation in infancy. Mothers play an important role in their child’s life. So mothers of people with bulimia are critical and detached and mothers of anorexics tend to be over-involved in their child’s life. People with either eating disorder have parents with alcoholism or substance abuse. It seems that psychiatric disorders are present to parents of people with bulimia than parents of patients with anorexia. A higher incidence of sexual abuse is often present to women with bulimia. People with bulimia have an obese parent or have been overweight themselves during childhood. Parents can influence their children’s eating habits and prevent weight problems and eating disorders through a healthy eating habits themselves.

Genetic factors play an important role in anorexia. From this point of view twins had a tendency to share specific eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and obesity). A genetic propensity toward thinness caused by a faster metabolism and reinforced by cultural approval, an inherited propensity for obesity and inherited personality traits are some inherited traits that might make someone susceptible to eating disorders. Culture pressures is other factor which can lead to anorexic people. For example clothes for thin bodies, TV programs which present anorexic young models. Excessive exercise plays a major role in many cases of anorexia at athletes. Young female athletes and dancers may present the following problems:eating disorders, amenorrhea (absence or irregular menstruation) and osteoporosis.

The most common factor present in eating disorders which include chemical abnormalities in the thyroid, the reproductive regions, and areas related to stress, well-being and appetite are hormonal problems. A result of malnutrition or other aspects of eating disorders is the change of these chemicals. The limbic system is a small area of the brain where many of these abnormalities begins. Also hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) is a specific system with an important role in eating disorders. In brain is found a small structure that controls our behavior, like eating, sexual behavior and sleeping, and regulates body temperature, emotions, secretion of hormones, and movement called hypothalamus. An extension of the hypothalamus downwards called the pituitary gland controls thyroid functions, the adrenal glands, growth and sexual maturation. Major emotional activities like anxiety, depression, aggression and affection are controlled and regulated by amygdala,a small structure which lies deep in the brain.

Stress hormones called glucocorticoids are produced by the HPA system, including the primary stress hormone cortisol which is very important in marshaling systems throughout the body (including the heart, lungs, circulation, metabolism, immune systems, and skin) to deal quickly with any threat. The inhibition of neuropeptide Y (NPY), a powerful appetite stimulant that also has anti-anxiety properties is one of the specific effects. Certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) that regulate stress, mood and appetite and are being heavily investigated for a possible role in eating disorders are released by the HPA system. Serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine are the three hormones that are important. So norepinephrine is a stress hormone, serotonin is involved with both well-being and appetite and dopamine is involved in reward-seeking behavior. Low levels of leptin, a hormone that appears to trigger the hypothalamus to stimulate appetite have been observed in people with anorexia and bulimia.

The reproductive hormones that are severely depleted in anorexics are produced by the hypothalamic-pituitary system. Some experts believe that these reproductive abnormalities are a result of anorexia and others have shown that menstrual disturbances occurred before severe malnutrition set in and remained a problem long after weight gain in 30% to 50% of people with anorexia.

There are many factors who contribute at development of anorexia. Unfortunately teenage females are the most affected.

If one parent consents to the Emancipation of a minor child and the other does not can the minor child still?

Friday, January 8th, 2010

If one parent consents the the emancipation of a minor child and the other does not can the minor child still become emancipated?

This is my situation …. any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am about to turn 16 on July 21. I have been bounced around between my mother, father and other friends and relatives for as long as I can remember. My father does not want me never has and my mother has been in and out of drug rehabilitation for several years. I mostly lived with my father but he put me off on friends every chance he got. When I was 11 years of age my mother got joint custody of me in my parents divorce. My mother and her boyfriend (now my stepfather) got full custody of me a short time later. He is very controlling and abusive and drinks all the time not as much as he used to but I hate it and just want to get away. He used to beat me until I got too old and started to fight back then he started going after me emotional
ly/mentally instead and I’m sick of it. He constantly makes me feel like crap and says I’m worthless and calls me all sorts of derogatory terms on a regular basis. My mother does nothing about it. He is very controlling over both of us. I do not want to be there anymore. I talked my mother into letting me stay the summer in Arizona with my uncle and his family and they do not plan on letting me go back. They want to try to get parental rights over me which I know is going to be a huge fight between my mom and uncle and I want to get emancipated so i can go back to Oregon and live with two of my friends who are getting an apartment together. I do not particularly care for AZ and want to go home to Or. I recently just got back in contact with my father on facebook and I’m wondering do I need his consent to get emancipated seeing as he has not been involved in my life at all the past four years and if I can get his consent and my mother refuses can I still get emancipated? I do not really want to take everything to court and make light of the whole situation I have been trying to hide the abuse for a number of years now and am afraid of my stepfather and just want to make a clean get a way from the whole situation and I have a baby half sister who has cancer to think about I do not want her to get taken away because I know my mother would never forgive me also I do not want to put her through the same thing I went through having to be bounced around from home to home. What do I do? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

California Drug Treatment Center Succeeds Where Other State Programs Fail

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Matt battled drug addiction for fourteen years, but thanks to a California Drug Treatment Center, he now has a chance at living a drug free life. His journey to get the help that would save his life, started seven years ago when his mother, Lola, found Narconon Vista Bay, a California Drug Treatment Center, on the internet. Impressed with the program’s success rate and treatment methods, Lola knew that Narconon was the right choice for her son. However, obstacles lay in her path as Matt, caught in the Oregon Corrections system, could not leave the state. Instead of attending the California Drug Treatment Center, Matt was placed in a state run drug rehab.

However, within two months of completing the drug rehab, Matt was back to using drugs and committing crimes. The program simply could not handle all of the problems most addicts face. Matt’s dad explained, “I’ve come to realize that [the corrections system] is really good at putting addicts in jail or half-way houses, but they don’t offer the full spectrum of treatment that an individual needs.” One program even required that Matt have thirty days clean before they would even admit him. “If I could get Matt clean for thirty days, then he wouldn’t have needed the program, now would he?” his mother exclaimed.

Unfortunately, many drug treatment centers only deal with certain aspects of the rehabilitation process, and many addicts return to using drugs as Matt did. A few years later, Matt found himself in another state run program, but his experience there ended up much like his first experience – full of anxiety and fear. The meetings, the group therapy and the sober living environment were not enough to keep Matt clean.

His father knew he was on a suicide mission. If Matt stayed on this path he would end up dead or locked up for good. His parents decided to seek help one more time. His Mom got on the internet and, once again, came across the California Drug Treatment Center’s website, www.drugrehab.net, that she had come across all those years ago. She called determined that one way or another she would get her son to the California drug treatment center.

Despite the legal problems that Matt faced, the staff at the California drug treatment center eased Lola’s concerns and in her own words, “made it happen.” The staff ensured that Matt’s legal issues were handled and shortly after, Matt admitted himself into the treatment center.

Narconon Vista Bay’s philosophy is to increase those suffering from drug addiction awareness levels to a point that they can make positive choices and live a drug free live without anxiety and without fear.

Completing the California drug treatment center’s program was not easy. There were challenges to overcome, demons to face, and baggage to let go of, but Matt did it. Now, he is a graduate. “I can say with sincerity I’m happy and I’m happy to be sober.”

At Matt’s graduation from the California drug treatment center, his father said to the group of seventy people who had gathered, “To everybody, I can’t say how much this California drug treatment center has done. I can hear it in my son’s voice. I can see it in his attitude. I’m confident in Matt and I believe in him.”

How do I deal with a drunken mom?

Friday, January 8th, 2010

She doesnt usually drink, only on parties, reunions and stuff like that, to the point of being relaxed, not drunk. But when she does get drunk, she is annoying, stubborn, stupid and well… drunk-like. If I ask her to stop drinking she says she is OK and ignores my request.

THE PROBLEM: she and my stepdad have been drinking more frequently over the weekends, more and more often she gets drunk or in the burst of it… if I tell my stepdad to do something he simply says that she is just relaxing and she well deserves to vent out, my older bro just gets mad but does nothing. I hate to witness this… usually we have family over the weekends so they get to see her act like this as well, but no one think its a problem.

She is a great mom and a great person, she has taken care of me and my bro since babies, she is smart, loving, supportive, responsible, ect, so overall she is amazing, but this is starting to upset me, cause she didnt used to be like this.

How do I make her understand??
Im 22 and my brother is 23 we both still live at home since we are in college.

I just wanted to add that this started happening like 6 months ago, is not every weekend, but starting to. Thats why I dont think either of them are alcoholics (yet). So, I dont want to learn to deal with it, I want her to stop it and start acting grown up about it before it becomes a real problem.

What I dont understand is that my mom has always been very protective and concerned about us, every time we go out to a party or whatever, she stays up or wakes up in the middle of the night just to check that we arrived home safe, my brother sometimes comes home with a few “extra drinks on him” and my mom ovbiously doesnt like that so I dont get why she doesnt undestand why I worry about her.

Also, I have talked about this to my mom before and she said that they are drinking safely at home with friends and family and is not like they are out in a bar or a club but STILL is not normal for them to be like that

Is Asthma In Children Becoming More Frequent?

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Seemingly, asthma is becoming increasingly common in the United States and Europe. A visit to any school these days will find as many asthma inhalers among its students as Gameboys or cell phones. Why is it that asthma in children has become so widespread? For one thing, asthma is genetic, but that’s not why it has become so common.

It is widely believed that pollution does not cause asthma, but it certainly may exacerbate symptoms. The EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, checks air quality throughout the United States every day and then publishes the data on the Internet and other public media. Keep track of these pollution levels in your area (called the air quality index, or AQI) and if levels are over 100 that day, stay indoors or limit your exposure to the outside.

Another reason for increased asthma may be that smoking among children is increasing, although it is dropping for the overall population. Prior to the 1960s, it was not public knowledge that smoking was bad for you. In fact, as late as the early 20th century, doctors were encouraging patients to smoke to ease their “consumption,” or tuberculosis, symptoms. These days, of course it’s public knowledge that smoking increases lung cancer and other long illness, as well as other health disorders. Therefore, it is imperative for parents to not only encourage their children not to smoke and to talk with them about it, but to model good behavior themselves and quit smoking if they do. It will do little good for parents to lecture their children on the dangers of smoking if they themselves have a cigarette hanging out of their mouths while they’re talking.

Additionally, the rise in obesity among children, as well as the lack of exercise, contributes to the rise in asthma among children. It is also thought that smoking during pregnancy causes asthma in children, and it certainly contributes to health problems in newborns, including low birth weight. Similar to alcohol consumption, smoking during pregnancy is not illegal, but because it is so dangerous to the fetus, any smoking increases risks to the newborn. Therefore, any responsible mother to be would certainly give up cigarettes at least for the duration of the pregnancy, and perhaps forever. Certainly, pregnancy is a great motivator to quit smoking if you haven’t already and you currently smoke. With nine months off of cigarettes behind you, it should be a relatively easy transition to stay off of cigarettes once the baby is born. Certainly, if mothers nurse, the nicotine and other pollutants from the cigarettes get into the breast milk and are transmitted to the baby that way. Therefore, breast-feeding mothers also should not smoke, even if they don’t do so around the baby. Smoking is still dangerous to breast-feeding infants even if the mothers who are nursing them do not smoke around them.

Perhaps most surprisingly, one of the greatest triggers for the development of asthma these days in children is hygiene and cleanliness. In years previous, antibacterial products were not available. Soap and water were “good enough” for our mothers and grandmothers to keep their homes clean. Children also spent much more time outside playing in the dirt and getting dirty. These days, they spend their time on the computer. Therefore, children were exposed to and had to develop immunities to many types of different bacteria and germs that they no longer are exposed to as a matter of course. In addition, we are absolutely rabid about “antibacterial” products and think that any germ whatsoever should not touch our children or ourselves. However, this is not only not practical, but it actually flies in the face of common sense. We need exposure to bacteria and to germs to build immunities. If we do not get this exposure, one of the results is asthma. Therefore, it is prudent that we not use antibacterial products, but go back to plain old soap and water. We should also strive to have “clean” rather than “sterile” environments for both ourselves and our children.

Another possible asthma trigger these days are the cleaning products themselves. Many of them are full of toxic chemicals, which can trigger asthma attacks. It may or may not surprise you to know that many of these products have products in them that are utilized in other capacities to actually make bombs! Simply put, we need to “get back to nature” and use simple cleaning products, such as soap and water, vinegar and baking soda. By doing so, at the very least we can ease asthma symptoms in children who currently have asthma. Perhaps, we can even reverse them.

My siblings and I want to get her treated, but as my dad is no longer with us, we’re really strapped for cash. Rehab costs a lot and we can’t afford this. However, we can’t just let our mother continue on being an alcoholic. Any suggestions on how we’re going to get my mom treated?

Drug Rehab New York

Friday, January 8th, 2010

On April 2, 2009 the Senate passed the Rockefeller Drug Law Reforms in New York which will enable the state to help rehabilitate non-violent addicted criminals instead of incarcerating them. The Rockefeller Drug Laws were passed in 1973 as a one size fits all punitive approach which has wasted billions of dollars instead of allowing non-violent addicted criminals to have the option of rehabilitation. Right now in New York there are approximately 12,000 non-violent offenders in prison which cost the state on average $45,000 a year per inmate. The cost of inpatient drug rehab is roughly around $30,000 and will be more beneficial ending the cycle of addiction and allowing these non-violent offenders to once again become productive drug free members of society. Narconon Arrowhead is one the  largest and most successful inpatient rehabilitation program in the world and offers 24 hours a day care to our clients.

Finding treatment can be exhausting especially when your not sure what your looking for. It’s always good to do some research about the different types of treatment options available before making a decision. You want to find the program that best matches your specific needs. There are literally thousands of treatment options available: long term rehab, short term rehab, inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, detoxification, and several types of meeting just to name a few. The list goes on and on and it can be overwhelming. Some treatment options will substitute one drug for another while others will leave you walking out the door 100% drug free.

The goal of anyone who is entering into drug treatment on their own is most likely a person who’s ready for a change. Others who are sentenced to drug rehab may not have the same desire but, if they are placed in the proper type of treatment they too can achieve great success and move forward in a drug free happy life. Drug rehab changes the lives of hundreds of thousands each year. Families that were once torn apart by addiction are now together again. Mothers and fathers get their children back and children get their parents back, sisters and brothers are reunited and lessons are learned from all their mistakes. When an addict goes through rehab they make some sever changes in themselves so it’s important for the family and friends to get educated on recovery and the type of treatment their loved one goes through so they to can make the proper changes.

Cold Sores Home Remedies – 5 Simple Steps to Getting Rid of Your Cold Sore

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Cold sores are one of mother nature’s cruelest curses–they’re itchy, sometimes painful, and worst of all they cramp our social life, very severely so for some people (I know of people who simply will not leave the house at all if they have a cold sore, I mean they call in sick to work, have their spouse do all the shopping and errands, the whole nine yards).

If you’ve got a cold sore then, as you probably already know, you’re infected with the herpes simplex virus, most likely the type 1 strain (although type 2 is also capable of causing cold sores, even though it’s much less common), and you can never be completely rid of the virus, regrettably. I will say, though, that right now there’s a couple of very promising advances being made in the area of herpes vaccines–scientists have been trying for the better part of 60 years to come up with a vaccine to immunize people against the herpes virus and hopefully put an end to it for once and all like we’ve done with so many other diseases with the help of vaccines such as rabies and polo. Right now there have been two vaccines developed for HSV (herpes simplex virus), one is for treating what’s known as “shingles” (which is caused by HSV and technically known as “herpes zoster”) and is called “Zostavax”. The other vaccine, called “Herpevac”, is currently in Phase 3 trials with the National Institute of Health and is specifically designed to prevent genital herpes by immunizing women (the vaccine doesn’t work on men for some reason) against the HSV-2 strain (herpes simplex type 2). You can get more information on that by seeing the NIH website here: http://www.niaid.nih.gov/dmid/stds/herpevac/

A simple 5-step at-home procedure that I recommend to my patients for getting rid of a cold sore, and that can reduce the duration of an outbreak by up to 75%, is as follows (I must also note at this point that I do recommend that you get some anti-virals such as from your doctor, they will help, but that’s up to you):

1. Ice the cold sore once every 2 hours for 10 minutes, this will help reduce the pain and itching significantly, plus it also slows down the replication rate of the virus by slowing its metabolism which, consequently, will lessen the severity of the cold sore by the simple mechanism of reducing the number of virus particles present.

2. Keep the cold sore clean and dry by washing it once every two hours with a damp washcloth and soap, do this right after you ice it. Use a new washcloth each time you do this for sanitary purposes.

3. Apply benzyl alcohol (brand name “Zilactin”) to the cold sore with a q-tip each time after you wash it. Isopropyl alcohol may be substituted if you can’t find any benzyl alcohol.

4. Lastly, apply some nail polish remover to it with a new q-tip. This will keep the sore very dry and soak up all the fluid it may seep over the next 2 hours until you can wash it again.

5. Start taking L-lysine at a dosage of 1000mg 3 times per day–this is a simple over-the-counter supplement that can be found at your local drug store or GNC (or similar store). Lysine has been proven in multiple scientific studies to help in the treatment and prevention of cold sores (Source: Indiana University School of Medicine Study, go here to see it: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 ). A quick note from that study concerning the prevention of cold sores that may interest you:

”The treatment group was given L-Lysine monohydrochloride tablets (1,000 mg L-lysine per dose) 3 times a day for 6 months. A total of 27 (6 male and 21 female) subjects on L-lysine and 25 (6 male and 19 female) subjects on placebo completed the trial. The L-lysine treatment group had an average of 2.4 (p less than 0.05) less HSV infections, symptoms were significantly (p less than 0.05) diminished in severity and healing time was significantly reduced (p less than 0.05). L-Lysine appears to be an effective agent for reduction of occurrence, severity and healing time for recurrent HSV infection.”

Treating Co-Dependency

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Co-dependency is a serious addiction requiring specialised relationship counselling. Co-dependency is twofold. Firstly, it is the natural, behavioural reaction that is appropriated by one person in a relationship when the other person is involved in some kind of addictive behaviour. However in the other instance, some co-dependants are not involved in any kind of co-dependent relationship yet display the traits in their everyday life.

When the dependency reaches a serious level, a co dependent can place themselves in circumstances which are high risk for them and can cause them to lose control over their lives. They do what their disease tells them to do: to indulge in their addiction to another person. Those suffering from co-dependency can be both or just one person in the relationship. Treating co-dependency with relationship counselling is possible and often successful.

Co-dependency usually (although not always) involves some other addictive process such as drugs, gambling or eating disorders in one or both parties. When a person is invested in a cycle of compulsive and addictive behaviour, their ‘using’ affects those around them, especially those involved in close relationships with them, whether it is family, a spouse or a friend.

What happens to a co-dependent?
The stress and emotional pain of addictive behaviour has a severe impact on those witnessing the decline. Soon the co-dependent begins to ‘look after’ the addict as they feel the addict will be safer, which brings about relief for the person witnessing their addiction. Soon, this becomes severe co-dependency and an issue of control.

The family members begin to display traits of co-dependency as they realise that the addict will die if not helped and their need to control the addict becomes even greater. The relationship becomes strained because of the lying and deceit.

Family and friends begin to respond to the addict’s every need with attempts to save the addict by lending money, cleaning up after them, lying to others to help the addict cover up their addiction, constant checking up on the person and trying to control every outcome, basing their entire existence on the other person and keeping the pain at bay.

Co-dependency and the addiction to the other person begins to break down individual boundaries: their identity begins to fade as personal beliefs and their goals change to make everyone else happy, forgetting their own wellbeing.

What are the characteristics of co-dependency?
There are many characteristics of a co-dependent; however some are more distinguishable than others. A co-dependent will need approval and seek it constantly, whilst having a bad understanding of who they are. They search for people in need: “victim” roles to play mother to, and obviously the compromising of their own wellbeing for others.

Relationship Counselling
Treatment for co-dependency is a gradual process. When a person is co-dependent and literally ‘addicted’ to another person or relationship, the recovery process is complex. Unlike drugs where a person can abstain completely, a co-dependent will need to be amongst people (their very addiction) to learn to re-integrate into society. In severe cases, in-patient treatment may be needed in a rehabilitation centre providing relationship counselling for treating co-dependence.

The first step in finding recovery from co-dependency is to withdraw from whichever relationship is addictive. The relationship need not be terminated, but abstinence is needed for a time. Therapy and relationship counselling are extremely beneficial to those suffering from co-dependency. Once the co-dependent is unable to rely on other people to affirm them and give them a purpose, they are able to begin therapy and counselling which is of huge benefit. Individual and group therapy is highly successful in the treatment of co-dependency. Rehabilitation clients such as drug addicts and alcoholics are often co-dependent and rehabilitation centres frequently treat patients for co-dependency as well as their other addictions.

The Twelve Steps of Co-Dependents’ Anonymous
The Minnesota Model of addictions counselling states that co-dependents are addicts, and have the same disease as drug addicts, alcoholics, gambling addicts and other addictions. There is no cure, but with a Twelve Step daily programme of recovery, the sufferers can manage their illness and lead normal lives again.

The Twelve Steps of Co-dependents’ Anonymous (CODA) are the same steps as used in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the same programme, but slightly changed to focus on co-dependency. The programme is spiritually based and involves a daily way of life to help the co-dependent cope with problems whilst keeping their addictive tendencies arrested. Rehabilitation centres using the Minnesota Model of counselling have found that the results have been far more successful than only counselling alone.

A co-dependent has neglected their needs to focus on others over a significant period of time. Once in a recovery programme, a co-dependent needs to be self loving and nurturing through relationship counselling needs to look after themselves spiritually, emotionally and physically. With the Twelve Steps of Co-Dependents’ Anonymous, accompanied by therapy and a healthy lifestyle, they can arrest their addiction and return to normal life again.

Heal Acne Scars Faster

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Whenever I have a problem, I want it solved as fast as possible. This is especially true when the problem is obvious like a saucer-size acne lesion that has left a scar. Kindly enough, Nature gave humankind ways to expedite the healing process. And so, in four simple steps, you can harness Nature’s wisdom to rush your acne scars to a healthy mending.

Step 1: Don’t drink alcohol

Everyone is telling us to do this. Mother’s Against Drunk Driving and the local police warn us to leave the booze alone. Now, your scars have joined the chorus.

Here’s why. Laboratories studies revealed that having consumed alcohol impairs the skin ability to grow new skin cells and blood cells after an injury, like a popped pimple. Additionally, a report from Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental Research found that alcohol consumption reduces the inflammatory response after receiving wounds.

Proper wound repair involves a series of steps and inflammation typically happens once the skin has been compromised by a cut, gash, or in the case of acne scarring, excessive squeezing.

While this inflammation takes place, the wound is cleansed and new cells arrive to suture the injury. However, if the inflammation process is slowed by circulating alcohol in the blood, so is the healing process. Instead of downing whiskey shots, down some water instead.

Step 2: Drink more water

Two minutes ago, I just gulped down a huge glass of water because even the slightest degree of dehydration can slow down wound healing. Moreover, dehydration reduces blood flow and increases in chances of a wound infection. As you drink that water, relax and de-stress yourself.

Step 3: Reduce your stress level

Do you want your acne scars to heal ten days faster than normal? Try stress reduction. A study in the Lancet found that stressed women heal slower than women with less stress heal. In the investigation, researchers from Ohio State University College of Medicine tested the wound healing rates of women who cared for relatives with dementia to the wound healing rates of age and income matched women who did not tend to relatives.

One average, the women not watching relatives healed 10 days faster than their more stressed counterparts. Also, examiners found that the caregiver volunteers produced less interleukin-beta than the non-caregivers. After injuries, interleukin-beta contributes to rebuilding the skin’s tissue matrix.

Step 4: Apply zinc

You want to have the mineral zinc around when you have wound. Zinc helps facilitate skin rebuilding steps like creating keratinocytes. Keratinocyte cells manufacture the protein keratin which helps create the skin. Moreover, zinc’s antioxidant properties help remove free radicals and bacterial from wounds to expedite healing.

Additionally, according to a recent review of medicinal uses of zinc that appeared in Wound Repair and Regeneration, topical application of zinc should be considered for enhancing wound healing rates. To create your own zinc infused wound healing paste, just crush a zinc supplement and mix it with a teaspoon of a basic moisturizer. Next, smooth the mixture over your freshly cleansed acne scar to quicken its healing time.

Mother Nature’s Solution For Excessive Sweating

Friday, January 8th, 2010

If you suffer from excessive sweating, or hyperhydrosis, and want to solve the problem, you would probably try anything. But if you look to high-stregth anti-perspirants and other medications, are you potentially swopping one health problem for another?

But you don’t want to get rid of one health issue just to end up with another, possibly worse one – so what do you do? Should you just accept your condition and all the social embarrassment that comes with it? Well, thanks to good old Mother Nature – there just might be happier solution.

A number of natural remedies are becoming increasing popular with sufferers of excessive sweating. Although it seems to be the case that there is no single guaranteed solution – isn’t this also true of chemical treatments? But since these are natural remedies, you can try all or any of them without worrying about side-effects. It’s safe to keep trying and testing so you can find something that works for you. So, here are just a few popular alternatives to those nasty chemical-laden products: Apple Cider Vinegar & Honey. Take 2 tsp of thick raw, organic honey and mix it with 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar (the non-acidic kind). Take three times a day on an empty stomach.

Magnesium supplements. These have been known to be helpful in stopping excessive sweating. Due to their possible laxative effect, a small dose of less than 500 mgm is probably best to start with. (Magnesium is also helpful for calming the nerves, relieving depression and reducing stress and sleep problems.)

Sage. Boil a few sage leaves for 10 minutes in 1 1/2 cups of water then drink first thing in the morning. If one cup a day doesn’t work, try another one a few hours later. Also try adding sage to food.

Baking soda. Make a paste by mixing the rubbing alcohol and a teaspoon of corn starch and baking soda. Add a couple drops of a nicely scented essential oil and it will smell good too! Apply it last thing at night and then wash it off when you wake up in the morning.

Tea soak. Brew a nice strong pot of black tea, let it cool, pour it into a plate of some sort, and soak hands/feet for 3-5 minutes. (Note: soaking too long could turn your skin brown.) For underarms, just get some tea on your hand and rub, let dry, rub again. You can also try this with sage tea.

It’s only natural that you want to cure your excessive sweating but equally you don’t want to set yourself up with other health concerns. So why not try Nature’s Way? Many people have already used these alternative remedies to free themselves from the embarrassment of hyperhidrosis – and you can too. Naturally.

Cancer

Causes:
Cancer is the disease that results from the harm to the blood. When a person is trapped in few specific thoughts and finds no way to get out of them, the electric current responsible for our actions turns poisonous and starts causing infection in the blood. Resulting from imbalanced flow of currents, ultra microscopic viruses are produced in the blood. These viruses  accumulate at one place and start consuming that electric current which is an essential need for the functioning of life. These viruses feed themselves upon the R B. Cs (Red Blood Corpuscles) causing leukemia, in which the White Corpuscles of blood and tissues exceed the limit. Body tries to get rid of these excessive Corpuscles in the form of various secretions. This results in overall weakness and man turns into a skinny skeleton and finally embraces death.

In another type of cancer because of accumulation of viruses, veins and arteries of the patient are damaged. This destroys the entire circulatory system, which ultimately results in death of the patient.

Cancer is of many types: it could be affecting only one part or the limb or a system of the body.

Symptoms:
Since the electric current of the red colour is the food or the Cancer: the cancer consumes the electric current present in the Red Blood Corpuscles: the patient is deprived of the Vital energy needed for the maintenance of life. The patient looks pale and complains about pains especialy’ in the affected area.

Treatment:
1. The atmosphere around the patient is required to be made red, i.e., the room where the patient lives, its walls, curtains, bed sheets, pillowscovers and even the clothes of the patients should be red.
2. Red light upon the body for upto 15 minutes several times a day.
3. Red Chromatized water, 3-5 times a day.
4. Massage Red Chromatized oil upon the back of the trunk, thighs and calves, once a day.
5. Tell the patient that this disease is curable and he has to use his will power to overpower it.

Child Abuse and Neglect: Effects on Child Development, Brain Development, Psychopathology, and Interpersonal Relationships

Friday, January 8th, 2010

CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT:

Effects on child development, brain development, psychopathology, and interpersonal relationships

Neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse (broadly termed, child maltreatment) have profound and long-term effects on a child’s development. The long-term effects of chronic early maltreatment within a care-giving relationship (also called Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) of a child can be seen in higher rates of psychiatric disorders, increased rates of substance abuse, and a variety of severe relationship difficulties. Child maltreatment is an inter-generational problem. Most frequently the perpetrators of abuse and neglect are profoundly damaged people who have been abused and neglected themselves.

There are clear links between neglect and abuse and later psychological, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal disorders. The basis for this linkage is the impact that abuse and neglect have on brain development. Daniel Siegel, medical director of the Infant and Preschool Service at the University of California, L.A., has found important links between interpersonal experiences and neurobiological development (The Developing Mind: Toward a Neurobiology of Interpersonal Experience. Daniel J. Siegel, Guilford Press, 1999.)

We know that a child uses the parent’s state of mind to regulate the child’s own mental processes. It is through a sensitive, responsive, and caring relationship with a primary care-giver that a child develops self-regulation abilities, emotional control, behavioral regulation, and such cognitive abilities as cause-effect thinking, among others. The child’s developing capacity to regulate emotions and develop a coherent sense of self requires sensitive and responsive parenting. The National Adoption Center found that 52% of adoptable children have attachment disorder symptoms. In another study, by Cicchetti, & Barnett[2], 80% of abused or maltreated infants exhibited attachment disorder symptoms. The best predictor of a child’s attachment classification is the state of mind with respect to attachment of the birth mother. A birth mother’s attachment classification before the birth of her child can predict with 80% accuracy her child’s attachment classification at six years of age. That is a remarkable finding. Finally, recent research by Mary Dozier, Ph.D.[3] found that the attachment classification of a foster mother has a profound effect on the attachment classification of the child. She found that the child’s attachment classification becomes similar to that of the foster mother after three months in placement. These findings strongly argue for a non-genetic mechanism for the transmission of attachment patterns across generations.

Children who have been sexually abused are at significant risk of developing anxiety disorders (2.0 times the average), major depressive disorders (3.4 times average), alcohol abuse (2.5 times average), drug abuse (3.8 times average), and antisocial behavior (4.3 times average)[4].

Generally the left hemisphere of the brain is the site of language, motor activity on the right side of the body, and logical thought based on language. The right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for motor activity on the left side of the body, context perceptions, face recognition, interpersonal and emotional processing, and holistic perception. The orbito-frontal cortex (the part of the brain directly behind the eyes) is responsible for integrating emotional responses generated in the limbic system with higher cognitive functions, such as planning and language, in the cerebral cortex’s prefrontal lobes. The left orbito-frontal cortex is responsible for memory creation while the right orbito-frontal cortex is responsible for memory retrieval. Healthy functioning requires an integrated right and left hemisphere. A substantial number of synaptic connections among brain cells develop during the first year of life into the middle of the second year of life. An integrated brain requires connections between the hemispheres by the corpus callosum. Abused and neglected children have smaller corpus callosum than non-abused children. Abused and neglected children have poorly integrated cerebral hemispheres. This poor integration of hemispheres and underdevelopment of the orbitofrontal cortex is the basis for such symptoms as difficulty regulating emotion, lack of cause-effect thinking, inability to accurately recognize emotions in others, inability of the child to articulate the child’s own emotions, an incoherent sense of self and autobiographical history, and a lack of conscience.

The brains of maltreated children are not as well integrated as the brains of non-abused children. This helps explain why maltreated children have significant difficulties with emotional regulation, integrated functioning, and social development. Conscience development and the capacity for empathy are largely functions of the orbito-frontal cortex. When development in this area of the brain is hindered, there are important social and emotional difficulties. It is very interesting that the orbito-frontal cortex is sensitive to face recognition and eye contact. Maltreated children frequently have disorders of attachment because of their birth-parents lack of sensitive responsive interactions with the child.

Early interpersonal experiences have a profound impact on the brain because the brain circuits responsible for social perception are the same as those that integrate such functions as the creation of meaning, the regulation of body states, the regulation of emotion, the organization of memory, and the capacity for interpersonal communication and empathy. Stressful experiences that are overtly traumatizing or chronic cause chronic elevated levels of neuroendocrine hormones. High levels of these hormones can cause permanent damage to the hippocampus, which is critical for memory.[5] Based on this we can assume that psychological trauma can impair a person’s ability to create and retain memory and impede trauma resolution.

Abused and neglected children exhibit a variety of behaviors that can lead to any number of diagnoses. However, the effect of early abuse and neglect on the child can be seen in several critical areas of development. These areas include emotional regulation, behavioral regulation, attachment, biology, response flexibility, a coherent integrated sense of self across time, the ability to engage in affect attunement with significant others (empathy and emotional connectedness), self-concept, cognitive abilities and learning, and conscience development.

The effects of early maltreatment on a child’s development are profound and long lasting. It is the impact of maltreatment on a child’s developing brain that causes effects seen in a wide variety of domains including social, psychological, and cognitive development. The ability to regulate emotions and become emotionally attuned with another depends on early experiences and the development of specific regions of the brain. Early maltreatment causes deficits in the development of these brain regions, primarily the orbito-frontal cortex and corpus callosum, because of the toxic effects of stress hormones on the developing brain.

These findings strongly suggest that effective treatment requires a sensitive affectively attuned relationship. Siegel stated, “As parents reflect with their securely attached children on the mental states that create their shared subjective experience, they are joining with them in an important co-constructive process of understanding how the mind functions. The inherent feature of secure attachment – contingent, collaborative communication – is also a fundamental component in how interpersonal relationships facilitate internal integration in a child.”[6] This has implications for the effective treatment of maltreated children. For example, when in a therapeutic relationship the client is able to reflect upon aspects of traumatic memories and experience the affect associated with those memories without becoming dysregulated, the client develops an expanded capacity to tolerate increasing amounts of affect. The client learns to self-regulate. The attuned resonant relationship between client and therapist enables the client to make sense (a left-hemisphere function) out of memories, autobiographical representations, and affect (right hemisphere functions).

Effective treatments, such as Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, can have important positive effects on later development.
