my friend hits his mother? im freaked out!?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

now before you say anything,im gonna say i have an “urge” to report both of them. my friends 17 and he literally beats, hits and spits on his mother….i found out early this morning from witnessing and stopping it.
his mother is always high off Oxycontin, vicodin etc…now i realize hes pissed off for many reasons such as her staying in detroit, here not being able to enroll and get him to a decent school, her for cheating on her husband and having him, growing up thinking that was his real dad and him ending up leaving cause of her pill addiction. but that don’t give him the right to hit her,so i think i should report him.and her also for negligence, selling pills, taking pills and getting high. its just i don’t know how i want to go to a police station but don’t wanna give my name, can i do that? im just so confused?

So, Is It Possible To Earn Free Money Online Fast?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

The answer is – yes! You can earn free money online fast, even
without any web site or affiliate marketing. You’ll only need to
invest some of YOUR time and a small amount of money.

It doesn’t matter if you are a stay-at-home Mom or Dad; a
college student or a teacher; someone looking for a business
opportunity; saving up for something special; or you just need
to pay off some bills. The bottom line is this – you could use
an extra source of income, right?

To begin here are some quick Questions & Answers you may have
about free Internet cash:

Q: How much money can I make?

A: Several hundred. It depends only on YOU.

Q: How fast?

A: You’ll have the money in your bank no later then 3 months.
Usually, on average it should take about 2 months.

Q: Can anyone do it?

Yes, but in this article I will explain how to earn free money
online only if you are: from the USA, you have a credit card,
and you can invest some small money in order to make much, much
more.

—————SIDEBAR————— If one thing is for sure,
it’s that nothing out there is totally free. (And if someone
says it is, they’re probably selling something.) Whatever
business online or offline – in order to make money you must
invest some first. And I will tell you shortly where and how to
do that. Just keep reading on…
————————————-

Q: Is it safe to use my credit card?

A: Yes, absolutely.

Q: Must I have a web site or a list?

A: Nope. If you are from the USA and if you have a credit card,
you can start earning free money online immediately.

OK, enough of playing the questions and answers game. Your only
question left by now must be…

Where And How Do I Get The Free Cash? The short answer is -
using online rewards programs. Don’t know what a rewards program
is? A rewards program pays cash for all your actions: completing
offers, shopping, reading emails, referring your friends, and
more. You can visit http://www.cash4offers.com and see what a
typical rewards program looks like and how it works.

Now I guess there should be two categories of readers. The
internet “newbies”, who will say they don’t understand how it
all works; and the internet gurus who will say that all reward
programs are scams.

Wait! I will prove to you that they work in a moment; and that
you can make not only extra cash but receive some great stuff
too.

To get started making money with incentive companies, one needs
to create an account with a rewards program like Cash4Offers.
You will need an email address to sign up…

Worried about your privacy and spam? Please don’t! They will
never send you spam, you can cancel anytime, and the email
address is only used to track all of your actions when you
complete offers, shop, etc. That’s how they know who to pay the
free money.

Hey, in most cases you will get a sign-up bonus just for signing
up!

And now, I’ll explain to you…

How to Earn Free Money Online Completing Offers? Here is the
Cash4Offers offers section link:
http://www.cash4offers.com/offers.php?c=ALL&email=&uid=

If you click on the above link you can see that there are many
various offers available, ranging from credit card applications
to internet service provider deals. And, they all will pay a
certain amount of cash to your Cash4Offers account if you accept
them… But, just to warn you, most of the offers will require
that you use your credit card. That’s why I told you about the
money you’ll need to invest in the beginning. Not to worry
though, you can definitely make more than you spend, and most of
the offers are great trial deals where you can receive not only
free cash but top merchandise too.

There were total of 111 offers available when I wrote this
article on 22/11/2004.

—————SIDEBAR————— Make sure to log-in to
your account and access the offers from the member’s area when
completing the offers so that your cash is credited to your
account. ————————————-

If you wonder where the free money comes from, here is the
answer – incentive companies are affiliated with top online
merchants (advertisers), and the merchants pay a commission for
advertising their products and services. Rewards companies pass
the majority of the commission they make on to YOU, the
customer, when you accept their offers!

And here is my promise to you…

A Proof You Can Earn Free Money Online Please open or download
the following excel file to your computer:
http://www.cash4offers.com/offers_rewards.xls

As you can see I have selected only the offers that interested
me from the first 3 pages of all available offers at
Cash4Offers. And look what my earnings potential is — I can
make $65.40 after completing only 13 offers (approximately $5.00
for each offer), and receive a bunch of great merchandise too!
Remember there were 111 offers available. Imagine how much I
could earn if I completed all of the offers?!

It doesn’t matter if you have already signed up with a rewards
program or not, I advise you to explore all available offers and
use the above excel file as a template in order to evaluate your
earnings potential. Just click on each offer that interests you
and make notes of all offer details – how much you earn, how
much you have to invest, your profit, the merchandise you
receive, and your total profit. Use the template every time you
decide to complete offers online.

It really helps to decide which offers are the best choice for
you and what you will receive by completing each of them. Of
course, although there are well over one hundred offers
available, you should complete only the ones that really
interest you. You are not going to apply for all available
credit card offers, or get a free trial of all ISPs, are you? My
guess is that you should be able to make about $200 – $500 by
completing all of the offers that interest you.

—————SIDEBAR————— How long does it take to
receive cash for completing the offers? Well, some offers pay
instantly! And some may take up to 30 days (e.g. some credit
card applications) before you receive your cash to your reward
program’s account. ————————————-

If you don’t receive the cash from the offer within 30 days of
accepting it, you should contact the rewards program and send
them all of the details related to the offer:

The date of offer completion The confirmation email Your contact
info: name, email address, phone number etc. Usually the rewards
company will do the investigation for you and if you really
completed the offer (offers) they will credit your account with
the offer cash amount within about 3 weeks.

Got your cash in your account? Great! What’s next? Now, the last
step…

Request Payment & Verify Your Account Why do reward programs ask
you to verify your account by phone or mail? The answer is
simply this – they are trying to protect their advertisers and
themselves from fraud. So, request your payment either by check
or another method if available, and expect a phone call several
days before your payment is processed. You should receive your
payment in about a week or two!

Well, it was easy making free cash on the internet, wasn’t it?
But your earning potential doesn’t stop there, you could make
even more by receiving cash-back for shopping or referring your
friends. But that’s another story for the next article.

P.S. FYI, you can choose to receive great free stuff like
computers, TVs, gift cards and much more instead of free cash,
again, by completing offers. Visit http://www.1st-in-rewards.com
for more information about all available online rewards that you
can take advantage of.

Fear, the Motivation of Addiction?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

When, as a Counselor, I speak about Addiction, I can’t help but include the fact that I am an Addict. There’s no doubt about the fact that I’m an Addict in Recovery, but none-the-less, I am an Addict! I’ve been clean and sober for over twelve years, and I am working on 13 years, One-Day-at-a-Time! I am a CAADAC Certified Counselor, in California. I am a member of both the California and National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors. More importantly, I am a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. I’ve served as a treatment program Director, and have been a part of the Startup of two new, successful treatment programs. Again, all of this does not change the fact that I am an Addict. Once an Addict, always an Addict… This is a good thing, though some may not want to acknowledge what I’m saying. In my mind there is no such word as “Recovered”.

I believe that Addiction is very much initially, and later on becomes chronic and progressive, as a result of “FEAR”! There are all kinds of fears that can integrate into personality development. An insecure child can develop many fears. One thing in particular stands out as a cause of this insecurity, and that is poor parenting. I heard someone say one time that 96% of all American families can be classified as dysfunctional! This was based on the definition of dysfunctional as being; When one or more persons needs are not being met, in the family structure. An example would be; if dad has made up his mind that his son is going to be what dad never had the opportunity to be, when the son is inclined and possibly destined to be something else. In this situation, the son will likely never be able to please dad. This conflict then often puts mom in the middle, feeling like she should be able to “fix this” issue. If there are siblings, out of proportion sibling rivalry may grow from the conflict that can become constantly present. As a result of one family member’s distorted expectations, directed at only one family member, the entire family structure has become unstable. What’s worst in this particular situation is that dad is absolutely convinced that he is doing what’s best for his son, and is so blinded by his own belief and desire that he has no clue that he is the source of most of the problems that develop in this family! Two of the options that the son has, are neither healthy for him or the family. He can just, suck-it-up and try to please dad, or he can absolutely reject the pressure, which will in either case, most likely, have negative results for him and the rest of the family. This is just one relatively common case of what seems to be trivial, turning out to be disastrous. This also very often brings “Drugs” into the equation. Every single family member, except “maybe” the instigator, will be living with unacceptable fear in their lives.

Examples like the one above are commonly overlooked and well hidden problems in very many families. Fears of one kind or another are generally the cause of anxiety. In turn, anxiety usually can be temporarily quelled by the use of mood altering substances or psychoactive drugs. Psychoactive is the category that all, commonly abused drugs, fall in to. Anxiety is most often related to fear in some way or another. Just being inherently shy generates numerous fears that most abused drugs can temporarily overcome. That is, they can, until the drug begins generating new problems. Stop, and reflect on how many fears human beings can develop. Some dysfunctional personalities develop as a result of a fear as simple as being very uncomfortable around a lot of people. Many children that only have one gender of role model in their life can develop very unnecessary fear, that is hard to identify until it’s already done the damage.

I’ve learned a lot through formal education, but I am still most familiar with my own case, and use it to understand those that I serve. I have always been fearful in many ways. I have always had a general fear of life itself. What I mean to say is that regardless of accomplishments I’ve made or how other people see me, I privately am insecure about myself and have to constantly use the skills I’ve gained as a Counselor, to address my own self-esteem issues. This gives me a substantially valuable quality of “Empathy” when serving as a care-giver to other Addicts. When working at treatment programs, in individual session with parolees who have just finished a prison term, I’ve had many admit to being afraid. They often are scared by the setting which is new to them. Very often they are afraid of failure in treatment and many repercussions that it might present. They are afraid they’ll let someone down. They are afraid that no one will ever trust them again. They’re afraid of life without the drug that they have often been using for most of their life. They are afraid that their wife will not love the person that they must become and may have never seen before. They’re afraid that they’ll never get a job that will be “gainful employment” because of their criminal record. They’re afraid that they are going to have to be competitive in society without a Driver’s License. The list just never stops, and I completely understand that many of these legitimate fears can cause a failed treatment episode. Thus, it becomes essential that addressing fear becomes a root component of treatment of drug Addiction.

The thing is, that it is usually not possible to overcome all of the fear. My experience has taught me that many “normal” people have developed the coping skill of living with their fear. I believe that this is what I have done, myself, and it’s not easy for me, by any means! After 12 years of Sobriety I still have to go to AA and NA meetings kind of like one has to take vaccinations to prevent diseases other than Addiction, from returning. This brings up the subject of the nature of Addiction Recovery in that it is really a life-long process. Everyone has fears. But, not everyone knows, that somewhere in the back of their mind, they may be able to relieve this anxiety with a drug-of-choice. I’m telling you, first hand, that this is a fact for the Addict.

Group therapy has become a standard for addressing this confrontation of fear. It does not always work for every participant, though. Many people can only face this, often very personal, problem in individual session with a Therapist, Counselor or 12-Step Sponsor. This is also where the importance of knowledge of “self help” concepts is crucial. This is the truest strength of the 12-Step concept that originated with Alcoholics Anonymous. The Alcoholic or Addict draws strength from the group, in meetings, to hold him over one-day-at-a-time until the next meeting, while he is a “newcomer”! For some this goes on for months and even years. There are even some who have to use this method for the remainder of their life, if they are to remain in remission from this disease of Addiction! This amazing “program of life”, AA, has been adapted to address most of the Addictions that people fall prey to. The 12-Step Program is more prevalent than most people could ever imagine. It has spread over the entire globe. I live in a town that has a population of over 250,000. It’s not a big city or a small town. It is, I believe, representative of “Average America”, and with just AA and NA there are over 350 meetings every week.

Somehow I always come back to the 12-Step Program when I speak about Recovery! Though I am a trained Counselor, I realize that when ever I am able to help an Addict, it is because they have decided that they are going to “help him or her self”. We who suffer from the disease of Addiction, are so complicated that to remain truly “in Recovery” we must never forget the consequences of drug use. We, in my opinion, never stop having to address fear. Whether it looks like it from the outside, or not, some neurological characteristics that all Addicts have developed are always just below the surface and capable of causing relapse into the disease. Through the 12-Step Program we can never have to face this alone!

Diet as a natural treatment for acne

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Since the skin is the largest organ on the body and it assists other major organs in the human body with eliminating waste, one of the best acne treatments is diet which has many home remedies for acne in the foods that we eat. If you are unhealthy inside it will be reflected in your skin.

Acne occurs when the natural oils that the skin produces clogs the pores of the skin. Normally acne is prevalent in the onset of puberty when the body starts to produce hormones, it has also been known to be a problem for women during pregnancy. Since acne is a problem for people world wide, there are many forms of acne treatments, acne products and acne medications on the market.

A natural treatment for acne is diet, which some say can be an acne cure and for many is the best acne treatment. When I was a teenager I had severe acne and tried using what were considered the best acne treatments at the time.

Retin-A was one of the most popular prescription acne medications on the market at that time. Noxzema skin cream and Clearsil were two of the most popular acne products used among my friends and I. I learned the hard way that Alcohol should not be used as a home remedy for acne and with severe acne cutting back on processed foods replacing them with a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. I thought that diet as a natural acne treatment was going to be bad because until that point I lived junk food.

Using diet as a natural acne treatment was not as bad as I had thought it would be. There are so many foods that act naturally as a home remedy for acne and are often the best acne treatments. At first I thought that it would be easier to just remember when to use acne medication or the other acne products that I was using at the time rather than to give up on junk foods.

The internal home remedy for acne prescribed by my doctor and mother turned out to be for me the best acne treatment used along with all natural acne products like tea-tree oil. To my surprise I enjoyed this change in diet and in a short time I felt like it was an acne cure that was noticeable with in the week.

My mother was happier that I was eating something besides chips and was also happy with what we thought was an acne cure. She was also happy that she did not have to spend a lot of money on acne medications or worry about which over the counter acne products were the best. Who would have thought when I drank naturally sweetened juices and lots of water that it would be a natural acne treatment. My breakouts were far and few in between all because of using diet as an acne treatment turned out to pretty much be an acne cure for me.

There are so many acne treatments on the market today that profess to be the answer to all of your problems but the truth of the matter is you will have to find the best acne products or try to find the best home remedies for you by simply researching on your own.

Some people will require acne medications because more serious illness are the reason for their acne problem. Home remedies for acne through diet can alleviate many of your outbreaks because we truly are what we eat. If the eyes are the window to the soul then the skin is a reflection of your overall health so the beginning of a real cure starts from within.

Gestational Diabetes Causes, Symptoms, Cure or Treatment

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Gestational diabetes is a condition characterized by high blood glucose (sugar) levels that is first recognized during pregnancy. About 7% of all pregnant women in the U.S. are diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Most women who have gestational diabetes give birth to healthy babies, especially when they control their blood sugar, eat a healthy diet, exercise, and keep a healthy weight.

Diagnosis

A glucose screening test is usually performed between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, which involves drinking a glucose drink followed by measurement of glucose levels after a one-hour interval.
If this test shows an increased blood sugar level, another test will be performed after a few days of following a special diet. The second test also involves drinking a glucose drink, and results are measured at three-hour intervals.

Causes

As the pregnancy progresses, the mother’s energy needs increase. Coupled with this, the placenta produces hormones that help the baby grow and develop. These hormones also block the action of the mother’s insulin. This is called insulin resistance. The pregnant woman needs extra insulin so the glucose can get from the blood into the cells where it is used for energy. From about 24 weeks, insulin needs in pregnancy can be two or three times higher than normally required. If the body is unable to meet this requirement, then diabetes develops. When the pregnancy is over and the insulin needs return to normal, the diabetes usually disappears.

Symptoms

Generally, gestational diabetes does not cause any symptoms. Subtle signs, such as fatigue or excessive thirst and urination, may sometimes occur, but many women without gestational diabetes also experience these changes late in pregnancy. Because the condition cannot be diagnosed on the basis of the mother’s symptoms, glucose testing must be done to detect it.

Cure and Treatment

The cure for gestational diabetes is the cessation of those hormones that block it. This only happens when the patient gives birth, which may be several weeks from the time it was detected. Women who are predisposed should be checked early for their levels of glucose, lest they be affected by gestational diabetes. If you are diagnosed to have gestational diabetes, you are advised to lower down your blood glucose levels by eating a healthy diet. This means that the carbohydrates that you eat should be limited to be able to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Exercise is also suggested as part of the daily routine to lower blood sugar although it is not recommended in high risk pregnancies. The glucose levels in the blood should be monitored at least three times a day, after every meal. For those taking insulin, they also have to test themselves before meals to be able to keep blood glucose levels normal.

A cure for Diabetes has not been found yet.  However, it can be controlled. Ways to control diabetes are: maintaining blood glucose levels, blood fat levels and weight.  Controlling diabetes is very important and should be supervised by a medical doctor.  When diabetes is controlled, it will help prevent serious complications such as: infections, kidney damage, eye damage, nerve damage to feet and heart disease.

Facts and Changes About Mother and Baby During the Three Semesters of Pregnancy

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Pregnancy is a natural condition which involves certain changes in women’s body, behaviour and even lifestyle. Moreover, pregnancies vary from woman to woman, some women may have an easy period of pregnancy and on the other hand some women may face complications and need to be supervised by a doctor during their pregnancy.

First of all, women who find out that are pregnant should be ready for the next period of 9 months, they need to find a specialist in order to have a medical support during the pregnancy, they should learn about their condition and how to take care of themselves and the unborn baby and moreover pregnant women need to make some changes in their lifestyle, such as giving up drinking alcohol or smoking.

Furthermore, a normal period of pregnancy is about 40 weeks. This time is divided into three periods of time called semesters and in each semester things happen to the woman’s body and the baby. So, pregnant women may face natural emotional changes such as anxiety, fear about pregnancy and childbirth.

In the first semester, the baby who is still a tiny cells starts to develop and its heart begin to beat. Moreover, the first pregnancy symptoms that women usually face or not are: period stops or becomes light; some women may feel nausea and cannot eat certain foods and on the other hand many women feel the desire to eat foods that they never liked before. Other specific prgnancy symptoms are the swollen and tender breasts, the nipples and the area around them get darker, frequent urination, pregnant women feel tired and have headches and in some cases women may experience emotional shifts and mood swings, such as sadness or happiness out of the blue, fear and others. Moreover, in the first semester of pregnancy some women may develop complications which can lead to the loss of the baby. So, if a woman is diagnosed with a complicated pregnancy, she should follow a certain treatment and be careful during the pregnancy.

In the second semester, the embryo tends to seem more like a baby, the child has eyebrows, eyelashes, fine hair, can even move his/her hands and can kick with the legs the mother’s tummy. In addition to this, in this semester, women may notice other symptoms, such as weight gain, the breast get bigger, the feet, ankles, and face may swell, some women my experience nosebleeds and also varicose veins.

The third semester tends to be risky too, the pregnant woman should take care in order to avoid a premature delivery. In this last stage of the pregnancy, the belly is quite visible, the navel pushes out, the baby can be seen moving from the outside and because of the big belly, women can suffer from backaches and may have difficulties in walking or moving fast.

All in all, pregnancy is a unique moment in every woman’s life and the three semesters bring new changes and new exeperinces in the mother’s life. By following a proper diet and taking into consideration the doctor’s advice, a future mother can have an easy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Book Review – East of the Mountains by David Guterson

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

When you first look at the cover of East of the Mountains by David Guterson, you see a dark gray sky with barren mountains and a field full of dying grass.  Throughout the picture runs a gravel road which passes an apple orchard on the way to the mountains in the background.  The cover provides a good visual of the story that Guterson tells.  This is a story of a doctor named Ben Givens who was recently diagnosed with terminal colon cancer.  He has three months to live, and intends to travel east of the mountains to end his life on his own terms.

Ben Givens is in a tough spot in his life.  He was recently diagnosed with colon cancer after finding a painful lump on his side, his wife has died, he does not see his kids enough anymore, and he is nearing the end of his life at age seventy two.  Knowing that he has three months to live, he comes up with an elaborate plot to tie up his loose ends and go on one last trip to end his life.  This includes planting certain objects in his home to look like he just stepped out for a few hours, packing a few pairs of hunting clothes along with his shotgun, and preparing food and supplies for his two hunting dogs who will be traveling with him.  Ben’s plan is to go on one last hunting trip in a wilderness area he is familiar with and then shoot himself so he does not have to suffer anymore.

After loading up his Scout with all of his materials and his two dogs, he set out for the mountains.  His plans are quickly altered when one of his dogs climbs up into the front seat area and causes Givens to crash his vehicle.  He wraps the Scout around a tree, giving him a nasty gash on the forehead and a huge black eye.  His dogs escaped the accident unharmed, but now Givens was stuck in the middle of nowhere on a rainy night.  A young, hippie couple arrived shortly while driving to nowhere in particular, and helped Givens to safety.  They fed him some snacks and struck up conversation about how Ben is incredibly lucky that he did not die before arriving at a local town.  Givens paid a towing company to scrape his vehicle off the side of the road and then decided he must continue on with his plans.  Not having a vehicle would make his remaining days much more difficult, but he said goodbye to the hippie couple and started walking with his dogs.

Ben and his dogs slept in nature and hunted birds with his shotgun in order to eat.  He kept some of the birds in his coat for when he needed them and made sure his dogs enjoyed some bird as well to stay nourished.  He starts to have flashbacks to his past where the author tells of his father and his future wife, Rachel.  His father instilled great values in Ben, such as honesty and staying away from alcohol.  His mother pushed him to make the best of himself and ultimately convinced him to enter the medical field.  Then there was Rachel, the single most influential person in Ben’s life.  Readers get a sense in this book that Ben misses Rachel terribly and is looking forward to meeting her in another life.  They met near Ben’s home where Rachel was picking apples for the summer.  They constantly snuck off together where they kissed and fell in love.  Their relationship was forced to an end one day when Rachel left for nursing school and Ben entered the Army.

A big portion of the book is dedicated to Ben’s time spent in the Army.  He enlisted against his father’s wishes and was an infantryman in the Army’s ski patrol.  He traveled around the world and nearly froze to death, but made some great memories along the way.  Ben entered tense battles where his friends were shot and killed right next to him.  His best friend, Stackhouse, was shot three times, including once in the chest, but thanks to Ben, was saved after open heart surgery.  Not only did Ben witness his friend’s chest cracked open, but he helped pump fluids into Stackhouse and stop bleeding from other bullet holes.  This was also a large influence on his decision to become a doctor.  He realized that he could do more with his natural talents and could help save people’s lives.  The most important memory from his war days was the time he met with Rachel in a foreign country.  When they met up, both Rachel and Ben looked older, but were still immensely attracted to one another.  They decided to get married on their second day together and vowed to stay together until death.  Rachel mentioned that she wanted their ashes to be buried next to each other one day so they can intermix and become a beautiful flower.

After Ben’s flashbacks, we are brought back to his current situation.  He is still out in the wilderness with his two dogs, walking slowly toward his final destination.  Suddenly, he hears wolves and wolfhounds in the distance running at him full speed.  There were a total of ten or twelve wolfhounds chasing a single wolf than ran right by him, causing his two weaker dogs to join in the chase.  Ben knew that wolfhounds were bred and trained to kill anything that moves, and knew that his two hunting dogs were in serious trouble.  He slowly chased the pack of dogs and when he finally found them, the wolf was dead and being eaten by the hounds.  One of his dogs, Tristan, was nowhere to be found.  His other dog, Rex, was badly hurt with huge open gashes all over his body.  One of the wolfhounds still had Rex by the neck, forcing Givens to shoot and kill the hound in order to save his own dog.  The dog’s owner arrived soon by dirt bike and accused Ben of killing his innocent hound.  The crazy man ended up stealing Ben’s family heirloom shotgun and took off.  Being the doctor that he is, Givens used local tools available to suture his dog’s wounds the best he could until he could find a veterinarian.  The gun did not matter at this point; he just wanted to make sure his dog lived another day.

The problem was that Ben and Rex were in the middle of nowhere.  Ben was determined to save Rex, so he carried him in his arm for several miles until he reached a small town.  There was a small restaurant in the town where Ben grabbed a small bite to eat.  He then bribed a local truck driver with sixty dollars to take him and Rex to the vet’s office.  The man obliged, and struck up friendly conversation along the way.  Rex ended up having his makeshift stitches removed and replaced in the vet’s operating room where Ben helped again with an operation.  Rex was tired and would undoubtedly be sore for a few months, but the vet and Ben managed to save his life.  Givens was happy to have Rex by his side and felt that he had done something good near the end of his life.

At this point, Givens had a realization.  He was laying in an old hotel room feeling miserable, realizing that he needed to live out his final days.  Givens had met so many nice people who went out of their way to accommodate him and his dog.  In addition, Givens realized that he was making many people happy just by being alive, including his family who would be very worried by now.  Ben decided that he would call his kids and return home with Rex as soon as possible.  His kids would know about his plans, his journey, his sickness, and would help him live out the last three months of his life.

Ben walked to the local bus station and bought a ticket for his hometown.  While traveling, he talked to a young girl about philosophy and religion, and what might happen in the afterlife.  Givens informed her that he was a doctor and the young girl directed his attention to a group of three young Mexican men in the rear of the bus.  One of the men was clearly sick but refused treatment.  Using Ben’s medical knowledge and the girl’s fluency in Spanish, they managed to tell the men that the sick one needed to get to a hospital or he would likely die.  Givens had a feeling that the boy had Tuberculosis, a condition that one should not ignore.  The boys denied treatment and said that they needed to work and make money, so at the next bus stop Ben called an ambulance to come pick up the man.  Both Ben and the young girl knew the man was in the country illegally and could be deported, but he would be better off deported than dead.

After the young man and his brother were transported to the hospital against their wishes, Ben noticed the other young Mexican man standing around, not knowing what to do next.  Ben ended up buying him dinner and calling the local job services bureau where he found the man a job picking apples at the nearby Wolfhound Orchard.  Ben and the man ate steaks together, Ben paid for dinner, and they rented a car to leave town.  The two set out for the Orchard to make sure the man would have a job, and Ben stayed the night in a small cabin on the Orchard’s grounds.  The Mexican man came into Ben’s cabin late at night and lit a fire for him in order to say thanks.  While in the cabin, another person entered to tell Ben that a woman was in labor and the baby would not come out.  Ben did not think twice to get out of bed and run as quickly as a seventy year old man could run to her cabin.  When he entered the cabin, he saw an overweight woman with a blue baby that was obviously stuck.  After some manipulation of the baby’s arms and umbilical cord, Ben delivered the fifteen year old girl’s baby.  He was the hero of the night and returned to his cabin for some much needed sleep.

In the morning, Givens is woken up again by the lady-of-the-house at the Wolfhound Orchards.  Ben realized that this is the home of the man who stole his shotgun on the dirt bike, and this was likely his wife or mother.  He told the woman the story of his dogs and his gun, but did not care to get revenge at this point.  Ben simply wanted to be home again near his family and those he loved.  The woman felt bad for him and was thankful that Ben delivered a baby the night before, so she decided to drive him home, several hours in each direction.  Before they left in her truck, Ben saw the man who stole his gun approach and walk toward the woman’s house.  Ben yelled for him and walked up to him, not looking for confrontation, but knowing that something had to be said to make things right.  He told the bad man that the shotgun is cursed and the man can have it.  It was somewhat of a relief for Ben to give up on his gun.  He said that guns never bring anything but bad luck and the man had his share of bad luck on the way.

While driving back to Ben’s hometown over the mountains, the woman and Ben had great conversation about life and how valuable it is to an individual.  This reinforced Ben’s thoughts even more that he belongs at home with his family.  He needed to live out the rest of his days with his kids so they know the truth about him and can feel closure when Ben dies.  He eventually returns to his small home and finds things exactly how he left them.  Being at home provided him with comfort and a feeling of relief.  Ben curled up in his warm bed and pulled Rex’s bed alongside his.  The story ends with them both laying in their own beds next to each other, a man with his companion, both wanting to live to see another day.

East of the Mountains is a dramatic book which makes you think about how valuable life is.  Ben Givens was a man who had given up on life due to his age and terminal illness, but realized through his journey that you can never give up on life.  His medical knowledge and simple, yet witty personality led him to make friends and provide valuable services to those he met along the way.  The plot is intertwined and the flashbacks add another level of complexity to the story.  In addition, Guterson’s writing style is rich and descriptive, allowing the reader to form a mental image of the settings which Ben Givens travels through.  Overall, this book is rated a 4.5 out of 5.

My dog needs rehab help please.?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Our dog,Sunny,an American Staffordshire and Collie mix is very aggressive around other people. He growls at them and tries to attack. He’s part pit bull so we too are afraid. My mom is telling me that their going to give her to the pound. This is very bad because then he will not be adopted for sure. This is because he does not at all like other people except for us which is only six people. He is not at all sociable. And so he will be euthanized, and gone. I don’t want this to happen to him.
So I am asking you for help…
How many does rehabilitaing your dog cost if he’s really aggressive and part pitbull?
How much does each lesson costs?
Do you know any dog rehabilitation center in jacksonville?
Are there any other way I can train my dog to be sociable and not aggressive?
Please everyone,I am begging you. If you only know 1 or 2 of the questions I have just asked, still answer them, please. This pitbull needs some help. You are also helping him if you answer a question that I have asked. He is a very sad dog,and I don’t want to ruin too much of him. I love him.

An Online Directory That Simplifies Drug Rehabilitation Choices

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

As a public relations guy with a record label, I’ve had more than my share of exposure to drug and alcohol addictions. With a stable of rock stars under my management, I keep a half dozen proven rehab clinics on my rolodex. Despite all this background, however, nothing prepared me for the most heart wrenching experience of my life: finding out that my mother had become a drug addict.

By way of background, let me stress that my mother is the last person anyone would ever suspect of being a drug addict. My parents were typical middle class folks and my mom was exceptionally prim and proper. They were incredibly supportive of me through my childhood and paid for my four years at an Ivey League college. Mom was more than a little mortified when I graduated and immediately took a job with the record label, but much worse was yet to come. I once brought the lead singer of the KrewCutt Boyz to my parents place after he’d had too much to drink one too many times and the band abandoned him, passed out in our office. He stayed in their basement for a week until he’d sobered up. That’s right; I’d turned my parents’ home into a combination flophouse and Drug Rehab</a>. Mom never complained; she cooked him meals, did his laundry and packed him some sandwiches when he left.

Mom fell down the stairs last year while carrying a clothes hamper down to the laundry room.  She tore several tendons and the doctor prescribed OxyContin to deal with the pain. I was utterly shocked when my father called me a few months ago to say that mom had been caught forging a renewal on her prescription. I stared at that rolodex, but nothing had prepared me for dealing with my own mother; none of these clinics was appropriate for her. The Yellow Pages had dozens of entries, but no information. Then I found a web site that serves as an online directory for alcohol and drug Rehabilitation centers. There were hundreds of clinics listed and instead of flailing around for days or weeks tracking down information, I was able to narrow the choices down quickly and found a facility only a few miles away that specialized in cases like Mom’s.

I’ve picked a few people up from the rehab after they’ve completed treatment, but I’ve never felt better about doing so than the day my mom was ready to resume her life.

Hepatitis – Causes, Symptoms, Types, Prevention and Treatment

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Hepatitis is the presence of inflammatory cells in the liver tissue caused by excessive alcohol drinking, disorders of the gall bladder or pancreas, including medication side effects, and infections. In this article, we will discuss Causes, Symptoms, Types, Prevention and Treatment of hepatitis.

I. Causes of hepatitis

A person can develop hepatitis if they contract one of the viruses that can cause liver inflammation, or as a result of exposure to substances that can cause hepatitis. There are two ways that can lead to hepatitis: it can either occur as a result of infections or from autoimmune processes.

Hepatitis can be divided into two subgroups:

1. Acute hepatitis
Acute hepatitis caused by the below in result of inflammation that causes damaging to the liver’s normal function and lasting less than six months. People having a weakened immune system and weaken liver, making them more susceptible to be infected by hepatitis.

a) Infectious viral hepatitis such as hepatitis A, B, C, D, E.
b) Inflammation of liver caused by Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus.
c) Inflammation of liver caused by other bacteria.
d) Medication overdose causing damage to liver tissues and cells such as tranquilizers, chemotherapeutic agents, antibiotics and anesthetics.
e) Excessive alcohol drinking.

2. Chronic hepatitis:
Chronic hepatitis means active, ongoing inflammation of the liver persisting for more than six months. Chronic hepatitis, although much less common than acute hepatitis, can persist for years, even decades. In most people, it is quite mild and does not cause significant liver damage. It may be caused by hepatitis B and C viruses, drugs and excessive alcohol drinking. It can also result in cirrhosis, with an enlarged spleen and fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity. In some people, continued inflammation slowly damages the liver, eventually resulting in severe scarring of the liver, liver failure and sometimes liver cancer.

II. Symptoms
1. Jaundices
Jaundices caused by the excession of a chemical called bilirubin accumulated in the body’s tissues. When the liver is damaged by hepatitis virus, it’s unable to do its normal job and this chemical accumulates in the blood and starts to leak out into body tissue resulting in a yellow color in the skin, and especially around the whites of the eyes.

2. Loss of appetite
Loss of appetite is also called anorexia, is often the first symptom of acute hepatitis. Sometimes this symptom lasts for a very short time before being replaced by nausea and vomiting.

3. Fatigue
Fatigue is a debilitating tiredness and is a big source of frustration for people with liver disease. When the liver is damaged, feelings of extreme weakness is common.

4. Pain in the muscles and joints
Pain in the muscles and joints can last from days to weeks and are very common in acute hepatitis infection.

5. Low blood sugar
Infection by Hepatitis A virus may cause low blood sugar. Therefore regular monitoring of blood glucose level with constant glucose infusion is essential, because dangerously low blood sugar is a constant threat.

6. Insomnia
Insomnia is caused by liver inflammation of hepatitis virus C leading to trouble of sleeping, and waking up often during the night. Some people also experience unusually vivid, intense and frightening dreams.

7. Pruritus
People with hepatitis C sometimes have pruritus, itching to the palms of the hand and the soles of the feet.

8. Lymphadenopathy
Hepatitis may also cause inflammation of lymph nodes. They usually appear in the armpits, groin and neck.

9. Weakness
Hepatitis C also causes a sense of weakness. This symptom can vary from mild to severe and tends to come and go.

If you have any of the above symptoms, please consult with your doctor immediately.

III. Types of Hepatitis

1. Hepatitis A (HAV)
Hepatitis A causes swelling and inflammation in the liver and is very common in underdeveloped countries, resulting in drinking water or eating food that is infected by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse. This type of hepatitis usually has slow onset and most people fully recover. Hepatitis A can be discovered by blood testing.

2. Hepatitis B (HBV)
Hepatitis B virus is most often contracted via blood contact such as blood, semen, body fluids, IV drug abusers sharing needles or someone using tainted needles. It can also be transmitted through sexual contact and from mother to baby during childbirth. Hepatitis B causes inflammation of the liver leading to a serious infection that can cause liver damage, which may result in cancer.

3. Hepatitis C (HCV)
Hepatitis C, like hepatitis B is spread via blood and body-fluid contact such as blood, semen, body fluid, IV drug abusers sharing needles or someone using tainted needles. Hepatitis C used to be the most common type of hepatitis acquired through blood transfusions until a test for it became available in the 1980s. Hepatitis C causes inflammation of the liver resulting in liver damage that can lead to cancer. It also commonly leads to chronic liver inflammation and slowly damagesthe liver over a long period of time before leading to cirrhosis of the liver, that means scar tissue replacing normal, healthy tissue in result of blocking the flow of blood through the liver and preventing it from from working as it should.

4. Hepatitis D (HDV)
Hepatitis D is caused by the virus HDV. You can only get hepatitis D if you are already infected with hepatitis B. Hepatitis D also causes inflammation of liver and is transmitted through infected blood, needles and sexual contact with with a person infected with HDV.

5. Hepatitis E (HEV)
Similar to hepatitis A, hepatitis E is also caused by drinking water or eating food that os infected by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse causing temporary swelling of the liver and no long term damage to it.

IV. Prevention and Treatment

Cold water fish contain high amounts of essential fatty acids that helps to support the detoxification pathways in the liver, break down toxic chemicals and toxins from the blood stream. A healthy liver filter will keep your blood stream clean and free of dangerous toxins and microorganisms. The regular use of a liver tonic such as essential fatty acids support the repair of liver cells.

6. Limit daily intake of alcohol
Alcohol is a potent toxin to the liver. Excessive alcohol drinking can lead to cirrhosis and its complications, including liver cancer.

7. Stop smoking
Cigarette fumes contain high amounts of cadmium, a toxic chemical that causes not only blood clots but also weakens the immune system functioning by fighting against harmful viruses and detoxifying the liver.

B. With Chinese Herbs
Here are some Chinese herbs that have been used to prevent and treat hepatitis with proven results.

The herb stimulates the action on the liver and is one of the best blood cleansers. Mild stimulant to the thyroid functions and aids in the assimilation of nutrients.

3. Echinacea
Echinacea is an immuno stimulant. Enhancing the body’s resistance against both bacterial and viral infections it is probably the best detoxifying agent in Western Herbalism. It cleanses the blood and lymph systems, helps arrest pus formation and tissue putrefaction

4. Sarsaparilla
Sarsaparilla purifies the urino-genital tract, dispelling all infection and inflammation. It’s purifying action extends to the nervous system and is therefore useful in many nervous disorders. Sarsaparilla’s diaphoretic and blood cleansing action is useful for rheumatic inflammation.

5. Licorice root
Licorice root is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. It helps to increase the secretion of digestive enzymes and bile and is widely regarded as the supreme liver tonic.

6. Burdock
It clears congestion, reduces swelling and dispels toxins via the skin, kidneys and bowel. It is a nutritive and rejuvenatory tonic . Historically it has been used to support the action of the kidneys in urinary tract infections.

7. Dandelion
Dandelion cleanses the liver, kidneys, lymph and bowel and is ideal for toxic blood conditions. It increases the secretion of digestive enzymes and bile and is widely regarded as the supreme liver tonic.

F. With Common Sense Approaches
1. Reduce intake of saturated and trans fats
Uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated and trans fats not only cause cholesterol build up in your arteries but also increase high blood pressure and also damaging the immune system. It also is the main contributor to gallstone formation, fat liver that reduce the normal function of liver and making it vulnerable for virus infections.

2. Avoid intake of processed foods
Processed food contain high amounts of salt and artificial food additives that causes free radicals to build up in the body and high blood pressure. They are also toxic to the liver causing the kidney and liver to work harder in cleansing the extra toxins in the bloodstream. If this lasts for a prolonged period, they may damage the kidney and liver causing liver inflammation if infected by the hepatitis virus.

3. Limit alcohol drinking
Drinking a maximum of 250 ml for women and 500 ml for men will help the circulation of blood, nourish the body’s cells, and strengthen the immune system and liver. Excessive drinking not only causes liver inflammation, but will also lead to cirrhosis.

4. Drink a lot of green and yellow juices
Green and yellow juices contain high amounts of vitamins C, E and B that help to detoxify the body’s toxins and reduce burden of the liver. Green and yellow juices also help to protect our body from free radical build up, normalizing the liver function.

5. Quit smoking
Cigarettes contain toxic cadmium causing high blood pressure, increases the risk of calcium clotting up the arterial wall and reduces the amount of antioxidants in the body in result of weakening the immune system and liver causing the liver to be easier to be infected by hepatitis virus.

6. Limit intake of sugar
High amount of sugar promotes liver inflammation and free radical damage.

7. Do not overdose your medication
Overdosing medications is toxic to the body causing extra burden for liver function.

8. Do not share things with others such as clippers, scissors, toothbrushes or anything that may have come into contact with blood or body fluids.

9. Casual sexual activity must be taken with extra care.

IV. Other Treatment
1. Liver Detoxification
Strengthens the immune system with vitamins, nutritional supplements and herbs that we have been discussed lengthily in other articles.

2. Ozone therapy
Ozone oxidizes the cells of the body systemically. It stimulates enzymes and phagocytes of the white blood cells which chew up the viruses and the bacteria in the blood. It also activates alpha interferon, gamma interferon, interleukin II and tumor necrosis factor. It is effective in treating hepatitis B patients with high successful rate.

3. Lamivudine therapy
Combining vaccine therapy with lamivudine has improved therapeutic potential for chronic hepatitis B. It helps to strengthen the immune system fighting against the hepatitis B virus specially with patients with chronic HBV infection and active viral replication.

4. Interferon-alpha therapy
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious health problem because of its worldwide distribution. There are over 350 million people in the world infected with chronic HBV, 75% of whom live in the Asia-Pacific region. Interferon-alfa and direct antiviral agents such as lamivudine and adefovir are effective in the therapy of chronic HBV infection but only with some success, particularly in perinatally infected patients, patients with lower ALT levels and those with negative chronic hepatitis B.

5. Pegylated interferon
Pegylated interferon may be considered the best choice of treatment for patients with chronic hepatitis B infection. This therapy has been shown to be superior to both conventional interferon as well as lamivudine in the treatment of both hepatitis B positive and negative chronic hepatitis B with successful rates of 35-45%.

Im really worried about my friend and her mom[alcoholic/abusive dad]?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

I had a friend stay over this weekend and im worried about her,her mom and her younger sister.I asked her what her dad is like and she said she didnt want to talk about it.That was the first time I thought that something could be up.Then when her mom wanted to come visit with my mom she said that her husband said no.Then later that night my friend told me her dad was an alcoholic. She’s only 12,and she told me she’s already given someone a blow job plus she’s way to boy crazy for her own good.I think that maybe she’s doing that because she’s not getting any male attention at home.

Her mom called my mom this morning before church and told her that her husband pushed her into a wall that had something on it that jammed into her back.My friends younger sister was there during this.

Anyway, both my mother and I are worried about them but we dont know what to do.

Does anybody have any suggestions or anything that we can do to help?
My mom has already told all of them[except the husband obviously] that they are welcome at our house no matter what time of day anytime if they need us.

Reductil: Medical weight loss option for the treatment of obesity

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Obesity is found to increase mortality rate and has many unhealthy effects on body like making breathing difficult, increasing chances of diabetes and cholesterol, increasing the risk of cancer and many more. Obesity is not classed by being a few pounds overweight, but only if a person has BMI of over 27 or 30, then can he or she be termed as overweight or obese. For instance if you are 5ft 4inches and weigh 90kgs, you are obese and need to do something about it fast.

The first step to be taken is resorting to calorie-controlled diet and exercise regime. If they don’t work, then take the advice from a health expert or a doctor. Nowadays, many obese and overweight people go to doctors to ask for a prescription for Reductil weight loss medication. Find out more about this drug below:

How Reductil sibutramine work?

Reductil is an appetite suppressant. The active ingredient sibutramine in Reductil works by affecting neurotransmitters (natural body chemicals that are stored in nerve cells) in the brain. Reductil affects two neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and serotonin, from being absorbed back into the nerve cells, which are responsible for moderating mood and various other processes in the brain. With these chemicals free to act in the brain, it makes you feel less hungry and more fulfilled. Thus, you do not over eat and do not go for snacks in between meals. If your food habits are responsible for your weight gain, Reductil is a great option for you.

Reductil Precautions

There are many precautions to be taken for Reductil, as it is not safe for people with certain conditions.

People who should be cautious while on Reductil are people with mild to moderately decreased kidney function or liver function, high blood pressure, epilepsy, open angle glaucoma, family history of glaucoma, involuntary, recurrent muscle twitches or vocalisations (motor or verbal tics) and depression, increased risk of bleeding and syndrome involving short spells when breathing stops during sleep.

Reductil should not be used in people over 65 years of age or under 18 years of age. If a person’s obesity is caused by a medical condition or has severely decreased kidney function or liver function, uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, drug, alcohol or medication abuse, coronary artery disease, heart failure, increased heart rate, irregular heart beats, stroke or blocked arteries in the extremities; he or she should steer clear of Reductil.

People with closed angle glaucoma, overactive thyroid gland, tumour of the adrenal gland, urinary retention caused by an enlarged prostate gland, psychiatric illness, syndrome characterised by involuntary repetition of speech, particularly obscene or vulgar words (Tourette’s syndrome), taking antidepressant, antipsychotic or appetite suppressant medicines, or tryptophan to aid sleep, in the last 14 days should also not take Reductil.

Pregnant women and lactating mothers should also refrain from Reductil.

Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should stay away from Reductil as it contains lactose.

Reductil side effects

Some of the side effects of Reductil are dry mouth, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, light-headedness, headache, sweating and anxiety. Some serious side effects of Reductil are aggravation of haemorrhoids, increased heart rate, hypertension, depression, seizures and kidney disorders. Consult a doctor if you want to know more side effects of his medication. By and large, most people experience no side effects, but it is important to be aware of any side effect of medication to reach to an informed decision.

Submission in Response To: Australian Government Green Paper on Homelessness

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Submission in response to:

Australian Government Green Paper on Homelessness

Homelessness: A New Approach

Author: Kingsley OkaforIgwe

Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice Major)

Migrant communities, in particular the refugees, face the daunting task of settlement. Rising living costs, interest rate rises, and the resultant inflation has complicated some such tasks. All these issues have exerted unwelcome impact on the lives of migrants who are struggling to make headways. These difficulties should not be tackled in isolation, but be addressed through widespread and sustained reforms concerning housing affordability, education, employment and rehabilitation.

1. Housing:

In my current employment as a multicultural social worker, I am fortunate to work with clients who had settled in Australia as refugees, mostly on humanitarian grounds and also non- refugee migrants. With little assistance, these clients are left to fend for themselves. The challenge of settling into the Australian community is being made more complex by the high cost of private rental. With the increased competition for private rental, refugee/migrants revert to community based ‘not for profit organizations’ for assistance in relation to housing and other household expenses. Where accommodation is provided, most are on temporary basis, and as a result, concerned migrants’ move from one temporary accommodation to another until all options are exhausted.

This adversity in relation to housing is epitomized by an account of a single mother of five. Being seven months pregnant with her sixth child, she appealed to the Victoria Government Office of Housing for assistance. Her application for public housing has been approved and she has been placed on a waiting list that could take up to three years. Her current lease agreement in transitional housing where she is now residing is due for expiration in July of this year. Prior to her application for public housing, she made several futile applications for private rental. With no end in sight to her housing crisis, she is now fearful that she will become homeless on expiration of the current lease. She is not alone in this respect; there are other migrants who are facing similar fates. Many of these are endeavoring to obtain private rental with limited resources at their disposal, the challenges are now, more than ever complex. This person’s account sums up all that is lacking in the present system and may cast doubts, and make mockery of the Australians’ innate character of offering a helping hand to those in need and to the less able.

It tends to follow that landlords are more favorable with applicants who have a lesser number of dependant children and those who are employed rather than those who depend on welfare for income. This leaves migrants in a quandary in light of their adversities. As a consequence of the strain on the lives of immigrants, anger, frustration and resentment may ensue overtime due to the belief that they cannot achieve their goals of equality along with their non-refugee/migrant compatriots.

It is in this context that migrants and refugees consider that access to employment opportunities are a potent safeguard against unemployment (including underemployment) and homelessness, and therefore await with keen interest any reforms that will substantially improve their employment opportunities.

2. Education and Employment Opportunity:

It is fair to say that a good number of refugees have limited employment skills due to the considerable period of time that they resided in refugee camps. Unhindered access to targeted training should be made available so that affected persons can acquire the skills necessary to compete in the employment market, and thereby aid in invigorating the Australian economy.

In light of the much reported skills shortages, the country could not afford to lose any of its competent workforce and the corresponding expertise through underemployment of some sections of the community. On many occasions, migrants (not necessarily refugees), who have employment skills, disclosed with disappointment that they were discriminated against on the basis of their ethnic origin. One man, for example, migrated to Australia seven years ago, and had studied in Melbourne where he obtained a degree in International Relations. Despite his sound academic attainment, he is unable to obtain employment. He has made ninety employment applications all of which were unsuccessful. With six dependant children, he is only employed for one day a week. Apart from this illustration, evidence that would demonstrate that there are many other migrants whose ethnic origin is a hindrance to securing reasonable employment thus far exists. Frustration and anger by persons who have similar experiences may build up and threaten integration and community cohesion. This is where targeted and unambiguous Government action in the form of Public Policy, consistent with Australian obligation under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination would be instrumental in overturning the growing trend of unemployment, underemployment and discrimination based firmly on ethnicity.

I understand that there might be individuals who may argue that there is no need for targeted training and employment opportunities for the migrants/refugees, given that the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), Equal Opportunity Act 1995 (Vic) (including similar Acts in other Australian States and Territories) and the Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) prohibits discrimination on the basis of ethnicity. I fail to accept this probable line of argument, given that neither Act would be an effective way to protect migrants in an environment dominated by well-placed non-migrants. Affirmative action programs have provided a better platform towards achieving this aim. For instance, the United States introduced similar programs in response to similar problems. These affirmative action programs were aimed at creating and promoting opportunities to ensure that smaller targeted groups such as African-Americans were not excluded from career positions or from pursuing active career paths that were available to other persons. This made the “hiring and promotion of target groups such as women and Afro-Americans mandatory and subject to a quota” (Robbins & Barnwell, 2006, p 522).

Anti-discrimination laws are at best moribund in this respect, given that migrants, even where there is access to services that would ensure that their rights are protected, are not conversant with the operations of such services. The quasi judiciary nature of such services, for example, the Anti-discrimination Board or the Equal Opportunity Commission make it unappealing for migrants to approach, considering the confusing legal jargon in use in such commissions, the intimidating court-like settings and the financial burden of using such services. What migrant will then rely on these services for redress? Who will foot the bill for such lengthy processes?

3. From oppression to Freedom?

Apart from the employment opportunity deficiency, refugees were not given a proper explanation of what “a free country” entails. They were not informed in clear and concise terms that with freedom comes constraints and responsibilities. I have discussed this topic at length with some refugees, particularly, the Sudanese with whom I was fortunate to work as clients. They were told that Australia is a free country without being given the distinction between what is acceptable and what is not. I was informed that the education they received was more or less concerned with Australian values, specifically, “fair go”.

The notion of liberty and freedom can be confusing given that most Sudanese migrants resided in refugee camps before arriving in Australia. It was reported that since the 1980s, the Sudanese Government and the Militias allied to the Government had been mounting a sustained campaign of violence against the villages that make up the Southern Sudan, including the Darfur region. These campaigns resulted in a negative perception and mistrust of all Authority. This mistrust was critical to the survival and self-preservation of these ethnic groups. This is why these hapless victims should be rehabilitated.

4. Rehabilitation:

Rehabilitation is central to healing and integration. One would imagine that those who have been shown the path away from terror and tyranny should be sheltered; that the hungry should be fed; and the oppressed should be comforted. The Sudanese refugees/migrants were not rehabilitated from the trauma and sectarian violence that is common in Sudan. Research suggests that persons who were victims of violence, or those who witnessed sustained violence may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other related disorders. These disorders, if not properly addressed may spill over into behaviors that the community may deem unacceptable, and may affect interpersonal relationships. The said disturbances may not only be stressful to the sufferer, but also to the broader community if not effectively tackled.

Rehabilitating the refugees would promote community cohesion, and safer communities, where residents could go about their lawful business without the fear of crime or the fear of being victimized. As a consequence of limited housing, most refugees have become transitional. Many empirical researches conducted in Western States, more especially, the Chicago School research of the 1920s, suggest that transience promotes social/community disorganization in the sense that cultural and social values have no chance to stabilize. It is now a common trend in Western democracies to formulate policies centered towards tackling the underlying issues, for example, the provision of housing, education, and employment. It was reasoned that the most effective way of obtaining integration, and by extension, community cohesion, is through investments in social development programmes that would empower individuals, families and communities to take charge of their lives.

In conclusion, it is imperative that while seeking to address issues of homelessness, that the problems confronting migrant populations are not ignored or being swept under the carpet. Fast tracking employment options for migrants, or at least the provision of level playing grounds would go a long way to addressing homelessness currently being experienced by some sections of the migrant community, and will assist in building safer communities. This would ensure that no particular community is substantially excluded from the Australian economy.

It is equally important to recognize the roles that community based organizations are playing in settling migrants and refugees into the Australian community. Efforts should therefore be made to harness these contributions toward effective utilization of their resources and knowledge. As it stands now, the services that community based organizations are providing are at best, disjointed. Efforts are being duplicated and priorities misplaced due to lack of a normative approach. This impedes constructive and decisive actions towards some crises that face the migrant community. One such impediment towards developing a normative understanding of the difficulties confronting the said migrants lie in the very fact that every concerned community based organization acts in its own best interest. I would suggest that the efforts of the community based organizations be harnessed and channeled towards an integrated case management system through which concerted efforts could be made to tackle the difficulties facing the migrant communities. A targeted action plan by the government would be pivotal to addressing the issues of unemployment, housing, discrimination and other related issues.

Migraine Remedy – 911 Treatments that Actually Work

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Can’t find the migraine headache treatment to fit your busy lifestyle? Well, you don’t have to call 911 just to ask the responding medic for a pain killer or tips on how to stop the throbbing head pain.

If you’ve been to your doctor or health care provider, then you may have been prescribed NSAIDs (or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like acetominophen or ibuprofen to help relieve the pain and to make you a more functional and happier person. But sometimes, you may want to try some other things, especially if you feel that you are getting too dependent on your medicines.

If you feel that an addiction to NSAIDs would not do especially if you’ve been suffering from migraines with a frequency that’s not even known to man, then here are some treatment remedies (although some are temporary) that you can use in your journey to eliminate the excruciating pain:

-          This is a twist to the usual wet-towel-on-the-forehead. Wet a towel, but wring excess water out of it. Leave it in the fridge for at least 5 minutes. Refold the towel and place around the head and the eyes.

-          Massage the forehead with primrose oil which prevents constriction in the blood vessels.

-          Lemon peel is also very helpful. Grind some lemon peel, make it into a paste and apply it on the forehead. My mother puts a jar of it in the fridge so that the coldness soothes instantly. Let it dry on your forehead and rinse off with cool water.

-          Speaking of peel, citrus peels (such as oranges, etc.) may also help alleviate feelings of nausea caused by the migraine. Breathe in the aroma of the peel.

-          Fresh grape juice is good treatment for migraine. Get it as fresh as it gets. Grind whole grapes and extract the juice. Drink the juice without adding any water or additives, as a concentrate is most effective than mixes.

-          Teas are also effective. Chamomile is effective as a relaxant and reduces the occurrence of migraine headaches. Jasmine tea, too.

-          Smoking and excessive alcohol intake should also be avoided as these are known triggers for headaches.

-          Avoid direct sunlight as too much light may trigger a migraine attack.

-          Vitamin B3 (niacin) should be taken to help alleviate migraine discomforts. Green leafy veggies, whole wheat, tomatoes, nuts, sunflowers, liver and fish are all rich in niacin and should be taken liberally.

-          A friend uses some sandalwood powder with a few drops of water to form a paste. Apply to the forehead and let it dry. Rub it off by hand and wash your forehead and hand.

-          A combination of carrot juice and spinach, beet or cucumber juice is said to be effective in curing migraine. Or combine 300 ml of carrot juice with 200 ml of any other juice. Preferably, drink this fresh to maximize the full effect.

Alcoholism Treatment Options

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Medications

The classical use of medications for alcoholism is to encourage abstinence. Antabuse (also known as disulfiram), for instance, prevents the elimination of chemicals which cause severe discomfort when alcohol is ingested, effectively preventing the alcoholic from drinking in significant amounts while they take the medicine. Heavy drinking while on antabuse can result in severe illness and death.

Naltrexone has also been used because it helps curb cravings for alcohol while the person is on it. Both of these, however, have been demonstrated to cause a rebound effect when the user stops taking them. These do allow a person to overcome psychological addictions to alcohol, but they do not treat the neurochemical addiction.

In more recent studies it has been demonstrated that the use of naltrexone while the alcoholic continues to drink can result in extinction of the neurochemical addiction. Referred to as the “Sinclair Method”, this technique is used with good results some US states and in Finland but has failed to penetrate much of the world because of the long-standing bias against any treatment that doesn’t involve detoxification and abstinence.

Rationing

Rationing or other attempts to control use are increasingly ineffective as pathological attachment to the drug develops. Use often continues despite serious adverse health, personal, legal, work-related, and financial consequences.

Detoxification

Detoxification programs run by medical institutions often involve stays for a number of weeks in specialized hospital wards, where drugs may be used to avoid withdrawal symptoms. In severe cases, detoxification may lead to death. To that point, even a simple “de-tox” can involve seizures, if not properly monitored.

Post Detox Therapy

After detoxification, various forms of group therapy or psychotherapy are recommended to deal with underlying psychological issues leading to alcohol dependence. It is also used to provide the recovering addict with relapse prevention skills.

Aversion therapies may be supported by drugs like Disulfiram, which causes a strong and prompt sensitivity reaction whenever alcohol is consumed. Naltrexone or Acamprosate may improve compliance with abstinence planning by treating the physical aspects of cravings to drink. The standard pharmocopoeia of antidepressants, anxiolytics, and other psychotropic drugs treat underlying mood disorders, neuroses, and psychoses associated with alcoholic symptoms.

Group Counseling

In the mid-1930s, the mutual-help group-counseling approach to treatment began and has become very popular. Alcoholics Anonymous is the best-known example of this movement. Various branches are available for family members of the alcoholic or commonly referred to as the co-dependents. Other groups include LifeRing Secular Recovery and SMART Recovery.

Prevention

Some programs attempt to help problem drinkers before they become dependents. These programs focus on harm-reduction and reducing alcohol intake as opposed to cold-turkey approaches. One such program is called Moderation Management.

Nutritional therapy

Another treatment program is based on nutritional therapy. Many alcohol dependents have insulin resistance syndrome, a metabolic disorder where the body’s difficulty in processing sugars causes an unsteady supply to the blood stream. While the disorder can be treated by a hypoglycemic diet, this can affect behavior and emotions, side-effects often seen among alcohol dependents in treatment. The metabolic aspects of such dependence are often overlooked, resulting in poor results.

Return to normal drinking

Although it has long been argued that alcoholic dependents cannot learn to drink in moderation, research by the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) indicates a small percentage of individuals in the US whose dependence began more than one year earlier are now drinking in moderation. In contrast, a high percentage who undergo naltrexone use-reduction therapy are capable of normal drinking habits. Use of Naltrexone involves taking the medication an hour before any drinking occurs in order to maintain this.

Societal Impact

Today, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence are major public health problems in North America, costing the region’s inhabitants, by some estimates, as much as US$170 billion annually. Alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence sometimes cause death, particularly through liver, pancreatic, or kidney disease, internal bleeding, brain deterioration, alcohol poisoning, and suicide. Heavy alcohol consumption by a pregnant mother can also lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, an incurable and damaging condition.

Additionally, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence are major contributing factors for head injuries, motor vehicle accidents, violence and assaults, neurological, and other medical problems.

Alcohol addiction is a treatable disease. If you are an alcoholic or are a family member of an alcoholic, contact your physician for the most current treatments available.

Have Drugs Ran My Mom Crazy?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Well here it goes. My mother has been on drugs most of her adult life. Crack cocaine is her drug of choice. She’s been to rehab a few times, but can’t keep it together. Our relationship has always been strained. My grandparents raised me when she didn’t want to be bothered, so I just became attached to them. My granny died last year and mom has gotten worse. I recently had my 1st child and am going home (2000miles) for the first time since Granny’s death. My mom has already started causing drama and confusion in the family over who gets to see my son first. I asked her to pick him up a jacket if she found 1 and I would pay her when I got there. She said she was broke so I asked my uncle to look. My mom went ape s*** and told people I was trying con them outta clothes for my son!

WTF?

I just want to say screw it, and not even see her when we get home. Does long term drug use really kill the mind?
