Chances of Alcoholism/ Mental problems…?

My mom and dad were/are both alcoholics (its what drove my dad to his young death at age 45) my dad regularly drunk hard liquor my mom and sometimes my sis. are binge drinkers, also of hard liquor.
Also my mom is suicidal,and depressed and has ADD.
As of now I plan to stay away from all alcohol when I’m older (i’m 12 right now) I’m not suicidal, and considering the circumstances I think I’m holding up pretty well. I really want to get away from here though but I trust myself enough to know that I probably will not end up leaving my house (running away..)
What are my chances of doing all the things my mom,dad and sis (16 w/ 3 accounts of drinking, and 2 underage tickets) did?

Alcoholism is hereditary. If you start drinking, you are at a greater risk of not being able to control it. I’m not saying that to scare you, that is just how it is.
but, even at 12 years old, you are showing a great deal of intelligence by knowing what is going on around you. You see what alcohol has done, and just the fact that you are asking questions show you’re smart and aware.
i would suggestr you get in contact with some sort of local support group, talk to a guidance councelor, someone who can direct you.

Your chances are really big on getting addicted to alcohol. My suggestion is to stay away from alcohol forever (which is easier said then done). If you decide to drink be very careful about what you drink and the moderation of it.
What you need to do is repeat the mantra, “If it is to be, it is up to me”, constantly while you are going through self doubt periods such as you are now. The simple fact that you are asking us says to me that you’re a lot tougher than what you think you are babe. Wow!! You ROCK!! You’re only 12 and you have the foresight to reach out to people and talk to them!!! That is sooooo cool. That’s the first step to solving any problem, now matter how big or small it may seem. Just as simple as asking for help. Brilliant, isn’t it?? Ask and you shall receive. All you have to do is believe in yourself and YOU DO. Believe that you are entitled to a better life and you’ll get it, because you will make it happen. Determine right here and now that you will absorb (soak in) everything you learn from your mom and you sister, both good and bad, and learn from their mistakes. Help them to understand that they are sick and need to help themselves. Help yourself too though sweetie, find something to do that kids should be doing. Go swimming, bike riding, anything, just get outside in the fresh air and sunshine. The sun is full of health giving Vitamin D. Vitamin D and Calcium need each other to work in your body to give you strong bones, teeth and hair. Get out of the house when they drink, tell them that you are disappointed in them. Tell them you love them but you love yourself more (it will hurt to say that but someone needs to say it) and get outside and go walking to burn off the stress when they play up. Maybe the best part will be that your mum and sister will get a surprise if you say that, you never know, it may just be the shock they need !!

P.S. Alcoholism is hereditary, so although you have a big chance of having it, one sure fire way of not getting is by never drinking……… :)
Well if both parents were alcoholic’s then you could of been born an alcoholic when you were just a baby, so you need to stay away from all alcoholic, you can have a test done by a family doctor that can tell you if you were born with it. Now your mothers mental health is not inherited, but if she keeps on with this suicidal thinking and ends up doing it, well there is a good chance that other memebers of the family will do the same thing, cause they see if as solving all problems, cause that is what mom did, so they do it too. They can also see it as solving all of their problems by drinking , that may be where your sister is right now, and she needs help before she ends up like your parents, and she needs it now. So be really careful, and if you start to feel depressed or the need to do what they are doing then go and get help please, cause you are so young, you have a long life ahead of you waiting for you, and you can be happy, and get away from the enviroment that you are in right now. so just keep on going try for a college scholarship and llive on campus, i am i did not want to llivve here my mom said it would be the best time of my life and it is…..

I had a friend with a family history such as yours. And he, being a man, had greater pressure on him to have a drink whenever he went out and socialized. But he held steadfast and never ever let a drop of alcohol meet his lips. And he succeeded. He saw the extreme damage it did to his family and he wanted no part of it. He didn’t care if his friends teased him or made fun of him for not drinking. He just said he was allergic to it and couldn’t drink. Most people quit bothering him after awhile. He grew up finding a good career for himself and he is very healthy and happy and has no demons breathing down his back! Keep your tough attitude. You very likely could have inherited the genes for alcoholism, considering your family history. Just focus on healthy things when all around you are hurting and damaging themselves. It’s very sad. Try to get your family to stop and get help. But this disease of addiction is like a wild animal. It’s very hard to control once you start. It all starts with being born with an addictive personality. Just be very knowledgeable about addiction and as much about it as you can find out, so you can protect yourself from the same fate. Your poor mom is setting herself up for depression and suicidal thoughts because alcohol is a depressant. It slows down the body, it numbs you, it interferes with the proper transmission of signals from the brain to the rest of the body. It’s like an anaesthetic, you know the stuff they give you to knock you out for an operation. How can one live their life being in a state like that? Your brain can’t work with alcohol as its’ fuel. We are not set up like that. We need the right foods, the right nutrients. Alcohol is the cause of your mom’s depression worsening. And ADD needs stimulant medication not a depressant substance like alcohol. Your mom is not giving herself anything that her body vitally needs. See if you can get her to get into rehab. Or tell your doctor to help her. No one can do it alone. Your family should all get help! This does not have to go on, unless they allow it to go on! But they must get the right people to help them! And they have to want to get the help!
both my parents drank and I am 42 and I do not drink. So if you have your mind made up and stick to it you will complete your goals you have set.
